Our 1997 Dodge Dakota truck's engine failed this past February due to the lack of oil pressure. We then had to have the truck towed to the mechanic. Our mechanic told us we needed to get a new engine put in since our engine was full of sludge and he said it was due to the lack of changing our oil. My wife and I knew this was not the case at all since we always had the oil changed every 3,000 miles and we could not figure out how this could have happened. After paying $5,000 for a new engine, we were outraged and did our own research online about the Chrysler engines and found that this is actually a huge problem with the Chrysler engines everywhere. The only thing we've noticed in our research is that the complaints are stemming from the smaller 2. 7 liter engines, but we have a 3. 9 liter engine with the same exact problem. There is clearly a defect with the Chrysler engines regardless of the size of the engine. Chrysler should have to pay for this since they are the ones that are putting out the defective engines that are causing all of the sludge to build up in their engines!!.

Vehicle stalled while driving at any speed. Sometimes it took 10 minutes, sometimes 2 hours before vehicle will restart. Vehicle was serviced by the dealership six times. Diagnostic test was done, but no engine failure code was found. No parts were replaced. They only reflashed the engine, but this failed to correct the problem. The vehicle stalled causing an accident.

With only 48k miles on my truck, I had total engine failure. The problem was oil sludge that built up around the valves and blocked the flow of oil. The blocking of the flow of oil prevented the rest of the engine from being properly lubricated causing the engine to cease.
1-11-2002 oil pressure problems. I had the vehicle towed to the nearest dealer. . Donalson motor company in silsbee, texas. After 2 days they phoned me to tell me the engine had suffered a "catastrophic engine failure". The cause was "dirty oil". I run royal purple-a high dollar synthetic oil. The price tag for all of this was 5600. 00. I took a oil sample to the maufacturer to have tested. Both chemists that tested the oil reported the viscosity of the oil was intact. The oil was not the cause of the engine failure. I took this back to donalson and was told the oil was the cause. I found an mechanic who gave me an estimate of 3300. 00 for the same engine. When I went to pick up my truck donalson informed me that they would do the work for 3000. 00. They have had my truck for 1 month and 19 days, I went to pick it up and the airconditioner was no longer blowing cold air(I did not have this problem before). I took the truck back to them and was told that the ac had been contaminated while rebuilding the motor and it would cost several hundred dollars to fix!!!.
I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota pickuup truck that experienced engine failure at less than 60,000 miles. The cause for this engine failure was inadequate oiling because of sludge in the bottom of the oil pan. I bought the vehicle used from a car dealer with approximately 33,000 miles on it and have maintined it properly since that time. I and the mechanic I took it to believe that part of the reason for sludge accumulation in the oil pan is poor oil pan design. The way the drain plub is situated it doesn't allow for complete drainage of the oil during an oil change. This problem is probably aggravated by the fact that this vehicle is 4-wheel drive and the sludge gets resuspended with off-road use on steep terrain or rough roads. On conferring with an attorney, she suggested about the only legal recourse is if it occurred in a number of situations so I am looking for records of related incidents. My mechanic indicated he had one other similar case. Although this did not cause a catastrophic failure, it could have if I hadn't caught the problem in time.
