1 Oil Pump problem of the 2003 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 01/04/2010

Original owner of a 2003 Dodge Dakota quad cab 4. 7l v-8. It experienced sudden loss of oil pressure and catastrophic engine failure. Vehicle had only 60,745 miles on odometer, it should have been covered by Chrysler's 7yr/70,000 mile powertrain warranty but Chrysler refused to cover as with all the other similar complaints. How many of these engines have to fail before the government protects the consumer? this oil pump failure is a well known problem with Chrysler, but they refuse to cover any warranty claims for this problem. The engine is a defective design, these engines are failing at a very high rate. Speak with any engine remanufacturer and they will tell you about the design flaws of this engine and how many rebuilds they are selling to fix blown engines of consumers that have Chrysler vehicles with this 4. 7l engine.

2 Oil Pump problem of the 2002 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 03/09/2009

Started in 2005 with a blown lifter at 37000 miles. In 2008 the lifters, valves on one side blew as did the head. Dodge claimed I wasn't changing oil properly as it was full of sludge. The oil pump and sump clogged resulting in all the damage. $3800. 00 to repair. In March 2009 lifters blew again. Cost $600. 00 to repair. Shortly after that the oil pressure dropped. I changed the oil and it was full of sludge. I have been changing the oil every 1500 miles since March 2009 using rinsoline to try and clean motor. It still takes s 6-10 seconds after start to get oil pressure to motor. Lifters are tapping again and I am sure they are ready to go. I have changed the oil using castrol syntec 5-30 every 3000-4000 miles since I bought truck new in 10/2001. I believe the sludge issue is due to a faulty engine design on the 4. 7 l v8 Dodge used. I know find there are many people having the same issue. I feel the NHTSA should look into this issue. Thank you.

3 Oil Pump problem of the 2003 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 12/01/2006

4 Oil Pump problem of the 1999 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 01/03/2006

My son escaped danger when the transmission/torque converter of his 1999 Dodge Dakota went out on an interstate highway. After replacing that and heading back home, his u joints and wheel bearings went out almost causing another wreck. These were all repaired. So far $3000 in repairs in a month. Then the oil pressure dropped to zero as he was driving. Now the oil pump needs replaced. Along with the tie end rods, the timing chain, and the serpentine. He'd already had the total brake system replaced this summer. Having all the receipts showing regular oil changes, the warranty company refuses to pay for the oil pump because of some sludge in the pump. Now I find from researching on the computer that this is a very common problem in durangos and Dakotas. We've put $5000 in this truck in less than one month. The manufacturer needs to admit the flaws in this vehicle. They have some responsibility here. We are just glad he was not injured or killed. But we've put over $5000 in a '99 vehicle - which is unfair when the problems are related to the design and manufacture of the vehicle.

5 Oil Pump problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 11/28/2005

The 2000 4 wd Dodge Dakota with the 4. 7 engine that we own and bought new (last time. . . ) had an oil pump failure at 60k miles. The dealer had the vehicle for a week to repair the problem citing sludge build up and lack of maintenance as the reason for the failure and the reason for the longer than quoted repair time. Originally the quote was for 6-8 hours plus the cost of the pump which also came in higher than quoted, we ended up paying more than twice the quoted hours for the replacement of the pump. The "sludge" build up problem bothers me because it is reported all over the internet with other people having this problem in the 4. 7 magnum engine. The dealer told me that the pick up tube of the pump was blocked with sludge, hence the oil pump failure. Well that in it self is all understandable however, why does it make sludge. . . ? three years prior to the failure while changing the oil I happened to have discovered a slimy sludge build up in the oil fill spout on the engine, asked the service folks at the dealer about this condition and the reply was yes, this is a known condition, come in for the retrofit to cure this "moisture" problem in the 4. 7 engine. The service dept did indeed install this baffle and cap and I asked then if there were any other problems associated with this condition. No was the reply. So, my contention is that the aforementioned oil spout sludge problem went hand in hand with the sludge build up in the engine and caused the failure. I feel that the oil pump failure on this vehicle is not acceptable given to miles on this, a well maintained engine and I would like for Chrysler to pay for the repair fully and to investigate the reliability and failure trend in this engine and sludge making tendencies leading to these failure. Rad.

6 Oil Pump problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 11/15/2005

There has been a failure of the oil pump in my 2000 Dodge Dakota sle with the 3. 8 liter engine. . . . 60k miles, out of warranty. . . !! 60000 miles !! the dealer service dept claims that it was due to sludge build up of the pick up tube of the oil pump. I changed the oil often and use a good quality synthetic oil. . . No way "sludge" could be built up due to the oil. I have seen other instances of this engine having been known to make sludge on the internet. . . Great. . . !! in a related matter, I had the oil filler tube replaced about two years ago as it was sludge up. . . The service fellow replaced a baffle and cap on the filler tube. . There was a considerable amount of sludge build up on the inside of the tube assembly. Are the two related. . ? I would like for Dodge to pay for the oil pump replacement if they knew before hand that this engine indeed makes sludge.

Oil pressure light goes to 0 and back to 40 then stays at 0. Numerous other people having same problems with oil pump and oil sending unit, screens and etc. Obviously a defect from the manufacturer. Should be recalled and fixed for free.

11 Oil Pump problem of the 1999 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 08/23/2003

I took my truck in because the oil pressure was intermittently dropping to 0 then back up to 40. The dealer performed multiple electrical tests before going to the problem. I dont feel I should have to pay for the tests done when the oil pump has a known problem posted all over the consumer affairs and NHTSA websites. They should have checked that first.

14 Oil Pump problem of the 1999 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 06/19/2002

I had bought my 1999 Dodge Dakota in 2001, less than 1 year of purchasing this truck, I lost oil pressure, returned the truck to dealer where they tried to replace my motor with a motor that had more miles, this did not happen. Then another year later, gears in my transmission were spent where I had to pay a few thousand dollars to have it repaired. Truck has been sitting for a year, cause of engine knocking again, with no oil pressure, also replaced the oil pump, still no pressure. New converter was put in, still good!! brakes and rotors are another big complaint of mine, when I have to constantly replace these parts, like every 6 months, can you tell me why? I used to love Dodge, but this truck has been a 1 big headache, even parked, cause I know it is going to be costly to repair it again.

18 Oil Pump problem of the 1996 Dodge Dakota

Consumer experienced engine failure due to inadequate oiling because of sludge in the bottom of the oil pan, consumer was informed by mechanic that part of the reason for the sludge accumulating in the oil pan was due to a poor oil pan design, the way the drain plug is situated it does not allow for complete drainage of the oil during an oil change, which ultimately clogged the oil pump and caused the engine to fail.
