My passenger and I were sitting at a red light. The check engine of my 2004 Dodge Durango limited (5. 7ltr) came on, then the battery light came on and both of those lights started to flicker. There was a loud squeal and a pop, then the engine stalled and I felt the brake pedal fall straight to the floor. White smoke started to emerge from the engine compartment, which quickly turned a thick black color. I couldn't even see through the smoke, as it was so dense. I grabbed my phone and proceeded to call roadside assistance to get the vehicle off of the road (the vehicle was blocking a lane of a major highway in my town). I started to smell burning plastic and thought, "am I on fire?". My passenger instructed me to lower my window because another driver was yelling something and making hand gestures. When I tried to use the windows, I noticed that I had lost all power. In a panic I opened the door and instructed my passenger to do the same. That was when we heard what the other drivers were screaming. "get out of the truck, it's on fire!". When I turned to get out of the vehicle, that was when I saw the flames flowing up the windshield about 4" long. We jumped out of the vehicle and ran across the road to the curb, turned to view the vehicle, seen that it was a large fire and decided to run about 200-300 feet away from it. Just in case it exploded. The firemen were there in under a minute, but the vehicle was engulfed in flames in about 30 to 45 seconds. I have a large family and it's a good thing they were not all with me, as is the case 90% of the time. I do not know if I would've had time to get three small children out of their carseats in time. This could've ended much worse than it did.

While driving 2001 Dodge Durango will shut off if foot is token off the gas pedal. Will also shut off during turns in major traffic, causing an accident. Truck will also shut off within 5 min of idling. I have had the idle valve control replaced, fuel pump, battery, tps sensor, fuel cleaned etc. It doesn't throw any codes and mechanics don't know what the problem is. Please help! this is becoming dangerous, especially with small children in the vehicle.

While driving my 2004 Dodge Durango the speedometer functioned erratically and the interior lights would not go out. I pulled off to the side of the road, turned vehicle off, restarted and no change. Continued driving home when smoke started coming out from under the dashboard on driver's side only, and the vents on driver's side. Immediately turned vehicle off in the middle of the road-ran to a home. He grabbed fire extinguisher-no flames under the hood - he disconnected battery. Towed to garage, informed Dodge had recall for dashboard fires, towed to dealer who told me defect was in the cluster, that was not part of the recall and no wires in the cluster were melted together, therefore it was not a fire. I called Dodge headquarters, received a call on this date from "stacey" stating they had investigated which was to call the dealership and have it reviewed by their legal team and this did not fall under the recall.
Alarm/key fob fails to activate due to defect in soldering of battery holder to circuit board. Found many people with the same problem on carcomplaints. Com. The battery holder in 2004-2006 Dodge keys comes apart from the circuit board, making the key not work, and stranding you where ever you happen to be. When you open the key, you see the battery holder out of where it was attached to the 'motherboard', and can push it back in and make the key work, but it's only a temp fix as it keeps coming apart.
Back in the summer of 2008 I was having issues with my 1999 Dodge Durango shutting off for no reason. I did some online searching and found the pcm,ecm unit was over heating, after cooling it with an ice pack for 5 minutes the car would start again. After 3 months I finally bought I rebuilt pcm on ebay, they programmed the unit for my car and it ran better then ever. Well today 6/4/2010 don't you know it did it again but this time the unit is completely dead, I still have the old unit and popped that in and wow it started. We need to fight Dodge on this to relocate the pcm on the firewall near the battery where it stays cool. All the heat from the engine is blown to that side of the car causing this issue. How to do we get Dodge to fix this like others have said someone will get hurt and I hate to trash a car with only 74,000 miles on it.

Lights flicker when driving, also loss of intermittent wiper, loss keyless entry, loss interior lights, loss of rear window wiper, loss power door locks. Car can not be driven during rain or at night. Disconnected battery to reset cmt and all worked fine until lights were turned on. Once again light will flickerand again loss the operation of intermittent wipers, interior dome lights, rear window wiper, power locks, keyless remote entry, and door locks. The first time this happened was on or about 4/09/10 then reset cmt (disconnected battery)on 4/22/10. Test drive resulted in problem returning on 4/22/10.
I own a 2000 Dodge Durango, and it often will just shut down while I'm driving. I have owned it since October 2008, and this has happened 12 or 13 times. I receive a "no bus" signal on my odometer display. I have replaced battery terminals, and a battery. It seems to happen far more often in hot weather. It sometimes happens when I'm driving 65 mph on the freeway, and then the car shuts down and I lose power steering (very dangerous), brakes (even more dangerous) and the accelerator doesn't function.

Durango shut off without warning, while driving, multiple times. Once shut off on freeway in heavy traffic. Power steering did not work. Could not turn away from other vehicles. Only thing that worked was the brakes. Shut off at least 4 or 5 other times in parking lots, usually after initial start. Sometimes started right back up, sometimes took up to 30 minutes to start again. Battery had good charge. No delay to start, just shuts off without warning. We do not drive it on the freeway anymore for fear it will shut off and cause an accident. Timing for the failure is unpredictable. Husband tried to replay the circumstances and make it shut off, didn't shut off. Blinkers work intermittently. Have not tried repairing it yet. Did some research online, seems many people have this same problem with the same vehicle and none of the usual remedies work. I am planning to take it to the dealership, but am hesitant to waste money on something they don't know how to fix. Diagnostic tests for others have been negative. This problem has occurred several times and began about 6 months ago. Freeway incident was around may this year.
Bought car from dealer in abu dhabi - uae. At 1500km the cooling fan wouldn't turn off even I switch off the car. . . So I was obliged to disconnect the battery. The problem was the relay. At 2000km the roof hatch was leaking!. . The parts are not available with dealer; it took them 2 weeks to order from germany!. .

I purchased a 04 Dodge Durango 1-1/2 months ago. I was only given 1 key. They keyless entry and key are one. The keyless entry does not lock or unlock the vehicle. The prong that holds the battery down breaks off easily. If you try to manually unlock the vehicle it sets off the alarm. I am unable to lock my vehicle unless I set the alarm off. I have changed the battery, still doesn't help. I looked up on the internet and found this happens with this vehicle often because it is poorly made. I was told I had to pay $200 to replace the key and it will most likely happen again. There should be a recall on this item as it happens often and I am unable to lock my vehicle which makes it more likely for my vehicle to be broken into. The warranty does not cover this item, however I read on other cases that eventually this issue leads to the security system locking down and the vehicle not working. My issue has yet to get to that point but I don't want to wait for that to happen. Please look into this issue as Dodge refuses to be cooperative.
Power locks, headlights, dome lights, intermittent wipers, and rear wiper all flicker and then fail to work. Also, there is a buzzing and ticking sound coming from under the engine fuse box even with the vehicle turned off! I unplugged the negative lead on the battery. The problem came right back!.
I have a 2005 Dodge Durango limited w/ hemi. We purchased this vehicle used w/ 26,000 miles on it a year and 4 months ago. I have experienced several problems w/ it: broken remote keys-the remote locking devices on both keys are now dysfunctional due to the solder that holds the battery in place breaking. I cannot lock/unlock vehicle from outside and when it is locked from inside prior to exiting, upon re-entry, the alarm sounds until key is put into ignition and vehicle is started. The amount of money to replace these keys is outrageous!!!! windows shaking while rolled down-anytime any of the windows are rolled down they shake violently w/ in their casing. There is also quite a bit of wind noise heard when windows are rolled up completely. Had dealership look at it but they could not determine there was a problem. Navigation system-the main knob has become almost dysfunctional. It seems that it is sticking out farther than it once had. With out use of this knob, the entire nav system is virtually unusable. Seatbelt cover-drivers side plastic dust cover where seatbelt goes into seat came off and the plastic around it has a crack in it. There is quite alot of dust building up inside the seatbelt mechanism. Liftgate screws falling out-this has happened a dozen times regardless of how many times they are tightened. It is the screws that hold the plastic on the inside of the liftgate-where the closing handles are located. Broken pin on accelerator pedal-dealer calling this a "push nut pin" and it is what attaches the accelerator to the arm. Dealership certain it is a part malfunction however Chrysler refusing to repair. Underside steering wheel radio control-the left button that changes the pre-set radio stations as well as which disk is playing in the cd changer is sticking. If you just barely touch it the stations/cd's change continuously. In order to get it to stop, you must depress it very hard while moving it back and forth.
Bought car in 2007 had to replace one key because of electronics at 180 dollars each, 2009 changed car battery had to reset keys at 80 dollars, 2011 keys need replaced again at 130 dollars each. Bad design so they can keep fleasing you for money. Also had fuel tank replaced, brake lines rubbed together causing hole in line and loss of brakes, dust cover on drivers seat belt broke off, screws in back tail gate keep loosening and falling out.
On March 1st, 2007 we noticed that all the interior lights in our 2004 Durango would not turn off. Contacted the dealership and they couldn't take the vehicle until the 2nd. Disconnected the battery, and re-connected it to take it to the dealership on the 2nd. The dealership had the vehicle until the 6th. My wife went to the dealership on March 6, 2007 to find out if they knew what was wrong, because they wouldn't answer their phones. When she got there she learned that there had been a fire in the service department over night. It was expected that our vehicle had caused the fire. I was completely surprised when I heard the news, but know that I have seen all the reports about similar incidents it doesn't surprise me at all. I am just glad this happened at the dealership, and not at my home. Or even worse with my wife and kids in the vehicle. Dodge needs to wake up and realize that there is a serious problem and notify people before someone gets seriously hurt or killed.
Interior lights will not go out. Heated seats will not work, air panel lights do not work. Once vehicle has been shut off, I am able to turn off map lights after about 5 minutes. The light in the tailgate cannot be shut off at all. I have an appointment with minot Chrysler on 19 Feb, and was told they had same issue about 2 weeks ago, with another Durango. I was told by them to disconnect the battery, and after reading about all of the vehicle fires, vehicle will not be driven again until resolved. They believe they know the cause, which will cost me about 600. 00. Unfortunate I have leased the vehicle, and am over the 3 year, 36000 mile warranty. Vehicle now has about 42000 miles. Also note, my lease is done on the 28th of March.
On several instances beginning approximately November of 2006 the interior lights would either stay on, or not come on at all. Sometimes, upon entering the car, we would have to wait twenty minutes or more to get the lights to go out. A few instances, the lights would never go out and ran the battery down. Eventually, no lights at all would come on and at one point you could smell something burning, but never see it. When approaching the jeff wyler Dodge, and having our car serviced today (on 3-14-07), they had us pay for a diagnostics and stated that the instrumental cluster (sp?) needed to be replaced and the cost was close to $500. 00. Due to the price of the part, we decided not to have them replace it right away. Tonight, while reading the news, I came upon an article on wlwt. Com and found that if you are having an interior light problem (lights not dimming the way they are supposed to), to take your car to the dealer. I am very upset that somehow the recall is in the news, however a Dodge dealership mentions nothing to us about it? I will be contacting the dealer again in the morning to discuss.
The complaint I have is about the wireless remote key for the 2005 Dodge Durango. The remote stopped working after a short period of time. I notified the dealer and I was advised I needed to buy a new key. I opened the battery compartment and noticed one of the contacts from the battery to the actual circuit board had broken off. I fixed that problem by using adhesive buy now the key is not programmed. Dealership wants to charge to solve that. I did a little research and found out I am not the only one with the problem. There is a lot of people that had the same issue. That is why I believe the wireless remote keys are defective and something must be done about it. Thank you. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
I purchased a 2004 Dodge Durango with the hemi engine in April of 2004. In July 2004 the check engine light came on and the engine failed immediately. I had it towed back to the dealer ship (towne & country Dodge conyers GA). They fixed it and did not tell me what it was. In March 2005, the same thing happened again. This time they replaced a valve spring in the 3trd cylinder. Two weeks ago, it happened again. This time they told me I needed a new battery. I complained and they recharged the old one. When I went to pick it up, there were warning lights on and the cd player did not work. They are charging me to do a diagnostic test. I have complained to Dodge with no satisfaction.
The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that when he puts his seat belt on, a spark comes from the retractor area and the radio shuts off intermittently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and they changed the battery twice, yet the failure still persists. The current mileage was 59,439 and failure mileage was 40,000. Updated 07/29/08. The consumer stated the radio burned out. Updated 07/29/08.
Complaint received via e-mail. Since the purchase of this SUV, I have had to bring the truck in for service for various things. Recommended service, a fuse out of place/battery recall, and today, January 8, 2005, for a detached throttle cable, which prevented acceleration. I discovered this problem as I was attempting to accelerate at a major intersection, and obviously, I was stuck in the middle of the road. We received assistance in pushing the truck off of the road, and I called gwinnett place Dodge. I explained the situation, and I was given the phone number to sw towing service. We also attempted to speak with a manager in regard to this matter.
The brake line to the front driver's side wheel cylinder is directly under the battery. This line does not have any kind of protective shielding to prevent battery acid residue from depositing on the line. I have had this line, and the battery, replaced once by the dealer at 26468 miles. Now the dealer does not want to replace the brake line again at 36500 miles. This is being blamed on a faulty battery, that would be prorated. They say corrosion on the brake line is not a problem. It seems like potential brake line failure is a hazard to me. My wife drives this vehicle daily and this is the good family car. I've never had a vehicle that did not have a shield of some type under the battery to prevent this type of corrosion.
I own a 1999 Dodge Durango with approximately 64,000 miles. Immediately upon purchasing the vehichle I have experienced a large poping and dragging sound when turning or performing a u-turn. Recently I attempted to make a u-turn and my car nearly lost control and felt as if it would tip over. I took the vehicle in to cerritos Dodge and I was advised that the vehichles upper and lower, right and left ball joints were completely shot. All were replaced. I continue to experience the popping and dragging sounds. Upon purchasing the vehichle, I have had to change the (all four) tires 3 times, obtain 3 wheel alignments, change the battery (went completely dead at approximately 25,000 miles) repair the brake light switch (brake lights wouldn't turn off), and repair door/hatch locks (unable to lock and make loud buzzing and clicking sound).
Consumer noticed fluid in the driveway under the vehicle. Upon closer inspection the consumer saw that the battery was leaking and the acid was dripping on the brake line. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer confirmed the fact that the acid burned through the brake line.

The battery exploded when I attempted to start the car. The top and most of the sides were gone.
The battery was replaced by the dealer on three different occasions, the transmission was replaced last year, and there was a problem with the door lock system.
Battery exploded when starting car spilling acid.
Battery exploded upon starting vehicle, dealer was notified, and unwilling to assist in this matter. Feel free to provide any further information on this matter.
My car started making these loud noises like a truck, I took it to the dealer and they told me that it was the barons, and that it was caused by not putting oil in the car or racing it. They told me that it was not under warranty and that it will cost $4000 to have it fixed. I have my oil change every 3 months, and I go to baltimore, MD and washington DC about twice a week. They will not fix it.
Electrical system suddenly went out all gauges radio etc front area. Checked all fuses and nothing was burnt out. Restarted engine four times before reset and then was ok. Have had recurring locking of brakes and grinding lose of control at low speeds and on wet roads. Disc brakes have no wear indicators on pads and it resulted in being worn down and ate into the front rotors before I was aware that the pads were shot. I had to buy new rotors and pads and the replacement pads also did not have indicators. The dealer stated that was the way that they were manufatured and I then stated that this was a severe and potentially dangerous and deadly oversight and that it should be corrected. I contacted Chrysler and they stated that they had no recall on this and that they had no technical problems or bulletins on this. My battery also suddenly went out without any warning and it caused the engine to die. I could not restart the engine and a new battery had to be installed. Power windows went out and could not be opened or closed by drivers switch.
Battery.
Consumer got into vehicle an attempted to start but battery exploded without warning when the key was turned.
