13 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2006

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7 liter v6 engine that just turned 73,000 miles last week. On 1/18/06 was running errands when the engine light came on and approximately 20 seconds later the car shut down. It would not restart. I called aaa to have the car towed to the dealership and I called the dealership to let them know it was on its way in. The service rep. At the dealership called on Thursday morning for approval to replace (2) sensors in the engine (one dealing with the crank shaft) before they could even get the car started to determine what the engine noise was. I gave the okay for the $322. 00 sensors to be installed and was told they would get back to me later. The service rep. Did call a short while later and said that I needed a new engine and that the cost would be $5,300. 00 plus tax (this includes the two sensors)! I asked the rep. That if I had gotten the car in sooner if I could have avoided this problem. I was told that the timing chain or tooth or something could have shifted or broken inside the engine and that the small pieces of metal circulating inside would have caused irreversible damage in 12-15 miles so that there was nothing I could have done. When asked if this was normal for a car well maintained and with 73,000 miles on it, the service rep. Told me no. My husband called the owner of the dealership on Thursday and asked if anything could be done about the price. The owner told my husband that he would look into it and get back to him. On Friday the owner called and informed my husband that there was nothing he could do locally (after 50,000 miles the warranty is expired) and gave him a 1-800 number to call the daimler Chrysler customer assistance center. I have records of every service performed on this car. The oil has been changed every 3,000 miles and all maintenance, with the exception of new tire installation) has been performed at the dealership.

30 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2004

2000 Dodge Intrepid this 2. 7 engine has a major engineering flaw in the motor. Even though I have maintained oil changes there is still engine sludge in the motor which has disabled my motor and I cannot drive it anymore. The extended warranty refuses to pay for the repairs even though I had proof of oil changes. There are numerous people with the Dodge Intrepid's with the 2. 7 engines who are experiencing the same problems yet the auto maker refuses to see there is a problem. My check engine light has never come on and had the ticking noise in the engine not become so obvious in the last week or so before taking it in to the shop, I would have probably at some point locked the motor up not knowing there was an engine problem causing problems for myself as well possibly other people on the highway. This car had a slight ticking in the engine when I purchased it but was told it was normal engine noise. When I bought the car it had a little over 31,000 miles on it and have only had it two years this past Jan. (04) and it has a little over 58,000 miles now and now the motor is shot I still owe over 11,000 on the car and they are quoting me a price of 4,800 and some odd dollars to fix it. This is a problem that needs to be addressed and a recall needs to be done on these 2. 7 engines. After researching the net. I have discovered that numerous people have this problem and are done the same way I have been done. Chrysler needs to stand behind their work and acknowledge there is a problem with the 2. 7 engines instead of giving customers like myself who have maintained oil changes grief.

32 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2003

This car has been in the shop more than the road, and now we are told that the engine is beyond repair, that we will have to purchase a new or rebuilt engine. Considering that I owe $9000, to spend $4000 to repair is beyond my means. We originally started having problems in 2002 when the check engine light would come on, and according to the Dodge dealer in our area, the code was for the leak detection sensor. This light would come on and stay on for a while, and we were told not to worry until it started flashing. Mysteriously, the light would then go off. We had several other repairs after that for the same code and sensors/modules replaced, then we would have the same problem. We were ultimately told it was a broken wire under the seat?. Eventually, in June 2003, my husband was driving down the road when the engine just seizure, almost causing a rear-end collision and him swerving to avoid oncoming cars and ultimately almost going in the ditch in front of a busy gas station. The car has been in the shop since, engine sent to machine shop, and we are told it cannot be repaired, and if they attempt to, they cannot guarantee for even a day. The valves all have to be replaced, and there are large indentations in the cylinder heads. Every time that something went wrong with this car, it would die in the middle of traffic. It is a hazard and a lemon!.

34 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2003

On Mar 29th, 2003 my 2000 Dodge Intrepid check engine light came on and the vehicle began stalling. I took it to a local garage. After placing it on their computer, I was told the vehicles' cam sensor needed replaced. I also had the mechanic change the spark plugs. Both of which had to be ordered through the dealer. $200 dollars later, I picked the vehicle up and drove approx. 5 miles before the same thing happened again. I took it back to the garage who advised me that I should have the dealership look into it. Once at the dealership, I was told I need a crank sensor. Another $200 dollars later, my wife picked the vehicle up, drove it no more than 2 blocks from the dealership where it stalled on her and my two children in the middle of us 52 in ohio. Now, after not having my vehicle for almost a month, I am told by the dealership the timing chain might need replaced which will easily cost $300 labor for 6hr of work, and at least $200 for the new timing chain. In less than a month I will have spent at least $900 on a problem yet to be actually verified as the problem needing fixed.
