1 Engine problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2010

I purchased a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7l engine from a previous owner. I put an additional $400. 00 in maintenance and repair parts (including fresh oil and filter) into it and the engine literally blew up the first time it was driven 20 miles. I am a 55 year old woman that had to abandon the vehicle on the road and arrange for removal. Replacing the engine with a non-defective one is cost prohibitive to me.

2 Engine problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2010

2. 7 bad motors.

3 Engine problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2009

I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7 engine. This is not my first car by far and I don't race it or anything. I began having problems with it in 2007 with approximately 80,000 mile on it. I had an oil sludge problem and had to replace the engine. I paid 3500 us dollars to replace it and now at 102000 mile the same problem. The engine is under warranty but I still have to pay for the labor which is 1000 dollars. This is really not good the car is a good car when running correctly but this engine issue is very poor and not something expected for a Dodge car or engine. Something must be done.

4 Engine problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2008

Our 2000 Dodge Intrepid with the 2. 7 l engine was purchased with a rebuilt engine and 122k miles. We were meticulous about maintaining this car, and had the oil changed every 3000 miles. At 135k miles, the timing chain broke without warning. This should not have happened on a well-maintained vehicle. The cost to repair it will be at least $2000. My son uses this car as his primary vehicle and doesn't have the money to repair it, so he is without a vehicle. This is a common problem with this engine. I feel that Dodge should recall and replace the 2. 7 engine with a 3. 2 or 3. 5.

5 Engine problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2008

Engine died while driving. Would not restart. Repair shop would not touch it. Showed me the oil on the dipstick, a milky brown color. Will have to put a remanufactured engine in the vehicle. Approx. 92,000 miles on vehicle when this occurred.

6 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2008

The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle completely shut down in the middle of traffic. The mechanic stated that the failure was caused by engine sludge. The manufacturer stated that they could not assist due to improper maintenance of the vehicle. The failure mileage was 131,340.

7 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2008

I was driving home, on the interstate, and my engine's timing chain broke. Took it to a mechanic, he said that it will require replacement of entire engine, that this failure is very common in these engines. He referred me to this website.

8 Engine problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2008

My car engine on a 2000 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 engine blew a motor.

9 Engine problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2008

Dodge 2. 7l timing chain broke due to engine oil sludge. 87,000 miles on the car with regular oil changes. Unfortunately with this engine it doesn't matter how often you change the oil. It's going to blow on you anyway. If this has happened to you contact impartial services group (isg) at (866) 332-3746. Apparently they will work with Chrysler corp to get you a settlement out of court. I am in the process now and hope to get about $1800 out of them. It's still far short of the $3000 for a new engine. Also, I have learned that the 2. 7 can be replaced with the 3. 2 which my mechanic is looking into. If you put the 2. 7 back in it will just happen again because it is a design defect with the engine. . Read more...

10 Engine problem

Failure Date: 02/29/2008

My daughter owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with the 2. 7l engine. It was acting up on her and on her way to the dealer it stopped running. After their mechanics worked for two hours just to get it into the shop they said the engine was seized and she would need a new one.

11 Engine problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2008

The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 45 mph, the contact attempted to bear to the right and the vehicle suddenly shut off. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated prior to the failure. The dealer has not diagnosed the failure. The current and failure mileages were 145,000.

12 Engine problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2008

I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that has 57,000 miles on it. I left work at 12pm on 1/4/08 to run an errand. I pulled into the parking space and my car was clanking under the hood. I shut the car off, ran in to complete my errand, came back out to my car and it would not turn over. I had my car towed to the mechanic and was 45 minutes late back to work. The mechanic ran extensive diagnostic tests and the conclusion was engine sludge. The mechanic stated "this is the worst engine I have ever seen". The mechanic had me come to the chop to visually see the sludge. I was shocked at the sight of sludge buildup. After extensive research, this is a known issue with the Chrysler/Dodge 2. 7 engine and there are thousands of complaints on the internet for the same exact problem. Dodge refuses to admit to a manufacture defect and refuses to fix or assist in the replacement of an engine.

13 Engine problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2007

Purchased a 2000 Dodge Intrepid new from dealer. Take amazing great care of my car and have records to prove that. Just hit 59,000. Miles and my motor blew up. Im now looking at spending $4000. To replace motor or purchase a new car. Listening to all the problems with these motors that are well documented I have decided to purchase a new car a Honda. I will never again buy american made. How can they be let to get away with this. Every consumer should be compensated for there lose. We all do the right thing, pay our taxes, our monthly car payments with high interest rates, but when it comes to crappy products we just have to eat it. That's why there people out there trying to beat the system. I say then go for it. I want $3500. 00 for my useless car. That's what my book value is. I also want $3500. 00 I have to spend for the down payment for my new car and two weeks of begging family and friends for rides, and all the stress related to this mess. Someone needs to take responsibility for these poorly made motors. They know there crap and there aloud to get away with it.

14 Engine problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2007

At 81,000 miles, the vehicle timing chain broke on highway causing it to lose all power, including power steering, and making it difficult to safely pull over. The owner's manual says to replace the timing chain at 100,000 miles. And the oil has been changed every 3,000 miles. According to my mechanic it is definitely a defect of the engine as he noted evidence of sludge build-up.

15 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2007

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that at approximately 80,000 miles the cam censor went out, then about 10,000 miles later then crank censor went out. When the car had 106,000 miles on it my wife was driving home from work when she heard loud knocking coming from the engine, took it to a repair shop to find out the engine seized due to sludge. This car has had the oil changed every 3,000 miles. The mechanic said it would about $4,000 to replace. Now I come to find out that Chrysler knows they had a problem with these engines and won't fix them. I bought this car new and never expected that Chrysler won't stand behind their product.

16 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2007

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that I have w/ a 2. 7 engine and the engine seized/locked up on me and the heat had went out on it right before the engine seized up. I took care of the vehicle and had no problems until then. My vehicle is nice looking in and out and I cannot afford another engine for this car so it's sitting there behind my house and I have no transportation. I paid a great deal for this car and didn't have any problems w/ it until it seized and it seized up at 97,000 miles! this car is a great disappointment for me and something needs to be looked into the problems everyone has been having out of these vehicles. I ran off the road and into a small tree. It makes me and my family/friends not ever want to buy another Dodge/Chrysler vehicle. Please look into this for me.

17 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2007

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid sedan se that's a 2. 7 engine I only have 70,000 miles on it. I was on the free way on I-70 w when the car suddenly stop on me . I had to pay for a towing the shop for repaired and I've been told that the engine is bad.

20 Engine problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2007

We have had regular oil changes on the car. A week or two after the last oil change, it started to knock. While on my way to work one morning it died on the highway. We have gotten estimates from the local Dodge dealer, and a couple other mechanics, and we need a new engine and it will cost a lot more than what the car is actually worth.

21 Engine problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2007

- the contact stated that while driving the 2000 Dodge Intrepid at 35 mph the vehicle slowed down to 5 mph without warning. This occurred when she attempted to depress the brake to stop at a red light. She felt as if the vehicle was out of control. The the lights on the dashboard started blinking. The vehicle then lost power. The contact stated that she was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic, and they advised the contact that there was a problem with the engine. Also, the vehicle was taken to a different mechanic, and they informed the contact of the samething . The vehicle had 39,700 miles.

22 Engine problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2007

I have a 2000 Intrepid with a 2. 7 l engine. I was driving on main street and engine seized. Dealership says timing chain broke and I need new engine. I have 72,000 miles on car. On a previous visit to the dealer shop, I specifically asked about the timing chain, they said it would be good for 120,000 miles. At that visit they told me I had oil sludge and they flushed the oil, gas and transmission lines out. I have spend thousand of dollars keeping this car in good maintenance condition and now it's worthless.

23 Engine problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2007

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7 engine. At 96000 miles I have experienced engine problems. The dealership where I took it to be repaired said that there was a problem with the 2. 7 engine and said that I should have the engine replaced at a cost of $5000. 00. They did not advise me to try to fix the existing motor because of a problem with oil sludge build up.

24 Engine problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2006

2000 Dodge Intrepid, 2. 7 engine. Oil sludge defect at 92000 miles. No warning. Vehicle was traveling 70 mph and timing chain failed, causing spin out with near crash. Vehicle was perfectly maintained using synthetic oil at 5000 intervals. Had to get hotel room with 2 kids at christmas time, and wait for repair to car, which included new top end and timing chain set. $2600 spent.

25 Engine problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2006

: the contact stated the engine would not start after multiple attempts. There were no warning lights illuminated to indicate a failure. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop, who determined the engine had seized, and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was alerted.

26 Engine problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2006

My 2000 Intrepid started knocking and then blew with no advance notice. After researching this problem I see why. Sludge build up even though I followed all maintenance schedules. I have replaced all the front end parts at substantial costs ,oil pressure sending unit, also the brake a number of times .

27 Engine problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2006

Temperature gauge topped out, came down, then blew fluid on engine. Dealer said engine was gone. I still owe a significant amount of money and do not have the means to get a new motor. And the dealer is afraid I will not get a loan for a new vehicle because of the amount still owed. I still have no solution for this problem. Car is.

28 Engine problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2006

Without any warning, oil light etc, my 2000 Dodge Intrepid would not start. All was fine before this incident. Service station informed me of timing chain problem and oil sludge build-up due to imperfect 2. 7 motor. I was also advised to not fix the problem because this motor is a piece of junk. Car only has 57,000 miles.

29 Engine problem

Failure Date: 10/16/2006

2. 7 l motor on 2004 Dodge Intrepid has excessive sludge build up resulting in blown motor. Car is in excellent shape and has been carefully maintained. Bad engine design that is well known to mechanics.

30 Engine problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2006

: the contact stated when the vehicle was started; the engine was chugging and would not accelerate properly while traveling 30 mph. The vehicle was taken to the nearest repair shop. After six weeks, diagnostics and physical inspection showed a valve part may have fallen into the motor causing damage and there was a severe sludge problem requiring the engine to be replaced. The service dealer bought the vehicle from the contact. The manufacturer was not alerted.

31 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2006

My 2000 Dodge Intrepid had an engine problem at 69,000 miles. Apparently this is a problem with these 2. 7 liter engines and is not backed by Chrysler. I would like to add my name to the list of complaints.

32 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2006

My 2000 Dodge Intrepid just blew two rod bearings and the chain in the front crank case cut all the through the metal after 81,000 miles and 6 years of owning the vehicle. The problem all started when I had to have my seat replaced via the seat recall Dodge issued (which the dealership did not notify me about, I had to find this out myself via the internet). So, I took my 2000 Dodge Intrepid into my local dealership, to have the seat replaced and while they were at it, I authorized some other repairs that needed to be done to my Intrepid (all out of warranty). I get the car back a day or two later, drive it off the lot and start to hear a ã‚knockingã‚쳜 sound when the rpmã‚s would hit around 4000 ã‚ 5000 rpmã‚s. The ã‚knockingã‚쳜 went on for another day or two without clearing up, so I took my 200 Dodge Intrepid back to dealership to find out what the deal was, since they just serviced my vehicle. The dealership told me that I would have to pay them another $380. 00 to have my engine pulled apart to diagnose the problem. I was very upset about this, but gave them permission to do pull the engine apart to fix the problem, figuring this would all be covered by their 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty they provide on their work/repairs they do. I get a call 2 ã‚ 3 hours later stating that the news is not good and that my 2000 Dodge Intrepid had two blown rod bearings, as well as the chain had cut all the way through the crank case. The dealership blamed this on being poorly maintained, then when I told them that was not accurate, as I was very religious on changing my oil every 3,000 miles, they tried to blame the problem on oil sludge caused by the oil I was using (pennzoil). I asked Dodge how pennzoil would feel if I told them that Dodge was telling their customers that pennzoil oil caused oil sludge and the dealership had no comment. They also didn't have any comment on why other engines run & last using pennzoil oil and their engines do not, still no good answer from them.

33 Engine problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2006

My 2000 Dodge Intrepid motor blew without any warning. I changed the oil on or before it was due. No lights came on to warn me that the engine was getting hot. At 108,000 miles I have no car to drive but I still have 3500. To pay on it.

34 Engine problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2006

On June 14th 2006 my 2000 Dodge Intrepid was parked in my drive way and at about 1:00 a. M. I was awaken to my door bell ringing and my neighbors screaming get out the house there's a fire I didn't hesitate I was going out the back door to find out it was my vehicle that was on fire by the time I had made it out the car was starting to pop and was about to explode. The milwaukee fire dept. Arrived and put the fire out and had determined the fire started in the engine. I contacted damiler Chrysler and was told someone would be out to do an inspection in a few days. Days passed and I called back on June 19th and spoke with someone named jay who said there was no inspection needed. I then received a letter from the company saying that it was not their problem and to take the matter up with my insurance company. I tried calling the CO back but was told there was nothing they could do for me. My serious concern is that daimler Chrysler was not concerned about the vehicle starting on fire especially in the engine. And their lack of concern for the consumers buying their vehicles and their safety. And why wouldn't they come out and do an inspection with something this serious. This makes me wonder what kind of company they are. Are they that big that their consumers safety doesn't matter and do they feel they are untouchable when it comes to serious matters. What if I would have been in the car with my children? and we all would have died? then what? I have never in my life been treated this way with something so serious and then being told not to call their office again makes me really think something is wrong. I tried contacting the dealership andrew chevy and was told that there was nothing they could do for me.

35 Engine problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2006

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid w/the 2. 7l motor. The motor failed at 66k miles because of sludge. I am now aware that Chrysler has a major design flaw w/ these motors. I purchased the car w/an 8yr/80k mile warranty and they will not honor it. My main issue is that it failed while my wife was driving it and she could have been killed or have killed someone because of this failed engine. This 2. 7l motor is very dangerous and vulnerable to failure at any time. The motor has major design flaws which makes it have excess sludge buildup. Chrysler should recall any car w/these 2. 7l motors to prevent people from being killed.
