12 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2007

Complained about Dodge Intrepid 2000 2. 7 engine. Problem began with lifter noise and oil light came on. Imediately stopped and shut engine down. Checked oil level which was okay. Restarted engine and drove 2 miles when problem recurred. Discussed with mechanic. Problem was sludge buildup in oil and blocking of oil line. Sludge apparently drained when engine shut off. Lifter noise and oil warning light stayed off until sludge again blocked oil screen and line. Regular changing of oil seemed not to be an answer. The mechanic stated she is aware of numerous engine failures. Also numerous complaints on the internet of engine failure because of sludge buildup in the 2. 7 Dodge engine.

19 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2007

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7 engine. I bought the car brand new and have been the primary driver ever since. I have maintained the vehicle and there are only 60,000 miles on it. The car had been driving fine, til one day all of a sudden it started to make a terrible tapping sound from the engine. I managed to get home and after having a mechanic inspect it, he said the engine need to be rebuilt that the timing chain guide let go and that all the guides, gaskets, timing chain, gears, and crankshaft would need to be replaced. I can't believe that a new engine or a rebuilt one would need to be done on a car of this age and such low mileage. I've had a concern with the oil light coming on periodically, but everytime we've had it checked, the oil was full and no problem found, thought to be an electrical concern. Now, I find out after some research that this year vehicle had a defective engine that caused sludge to build up and cause this light to go on and cause engine failure. Shame on Chrysler for making this engine. I think someone at Chrysler should contact me and assist with this repair. I have been buying Chrysler for the last 12 years. My husband and I had a neon, Jeep cherokee, and currently a grand minivan. My father in law is a proud retired Chrysler automaker. If Chrysler knows there were problems with these engines, then I should be given some consideration. I have always intended to buy Chrysler products, but after this, I don't know if I will ever buy one again, and I will tell everyone I know of this defective product.

20 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2007

Our 2000 Dodge Intrepid experienced an engine failure that resulted in loss of the vehicle because it would be more expensive to repair than it was worth. We had to have the vehicle towed and the repaid technician alerted us to the fact that this particular engine was known by chrystler to have engine oil sludge problems due to faulty design. Dodge should stand behind their product. This was our first and only chrystler product we will ever purchase. . . We are going to purchase our first foreign made vehicle, a Honda this time!!!.

22 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2007

Catastrophic engine failure occurring unexpectedly 1/07. Purchased a rebuilt engine. Six months later the car started to stop at any speed, while idling, and 50% of the time would not start at all. Had several dealers do diagnostics but could not pinpoint the problem as the car would run when taken to the shop. Was informed that it may be fuel sensor, fuel pump, or fried motherboard in the car's computer. Neither repair shops diagnostic equipment could pinpoint the problem. From 11/07-4/08 the car did not have the problem. Now it has started to cutoff while in motion again. It cuts off atleast three times per trip now, and hasn't nor stared in almost a week. New battery, and a rebuilt engine with under 10k miles on it. Needless to say the continued stoppage without warning has put me in some dangerous situations during my commute.

Failure Date: 06/15/2006

In June of 2006 my 200 Dodge Intrepid I took my car in for routine service and found that my car had oilsludge and have not had it running since, due to the fact that I don't want to have engine failure. I have been investigating the possibilities of recompense from the motor company but have not been able to find out much as of yet except that it is still in process. I am still investigating other complaints and gathering more back-up material before I am willing to give up my fight with Chrysler.

I was in the center lane of a three lane highway with traffic passing on either side. Was unable to even get out of my car. A police car pulled up behind and put his lights on and was able to push me to the side of the road. I then called a tow truck. It was frightening and dangerous situation. I was unable to pay for the repairs or trade the car in. I was forced to purchase another car and still pay off the remainder of the Intrepid.

35 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2005

I bought my 2000 Dodge Intrepid in very good condition. Had all fluids changed on a regular basis. Started noticing bluish/gray smoke. Took vehicle to repair shop for diagnosis. Was unable to determine cause of problems. Was driving the car and had complete engine failure. Good thing I live in a small town, some one could have been seriously hurt! I had no idea this motor was this poorly engineered. Also know first hand of three other cases with this motor right here in my hometown. Sadly, I am unable to make the engine replacement at this time because I am still making payments on the vehicle.
