The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled several times, with the illumination of the check engine oil warning light. The timing belt also failed. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who replaced the O2 sensor, oil switch relay and the cam shaft position sensor. The failure was not corrected and the vehicle could not be driven. The vehicle was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 58,000 and the current mileage as 59,000.
The 2000 Dodge Intrepid all at once would not start. I came out of the grocery store and it had a weird "clicking sound". My mechanic said the timing belt broke. He said that this model is notorious for this, that the oil reservoir gets clogged no matter the maintenance and that the breaking of the timing belt ruins the engine, unlike other cars that have safety measures to prevent engine failure. The oil can no longer reach the top of the engine and it burns up breaking the timing belt. The oil level when checked was fine. A full tune up was done on the car just a few months before, same mechanic. The new engine, because Dodge does not sell the old one any more, I wonder why, is $5400. I still owe $4500. On this car. Dodge, from what I gather on the net, has thousands in class action suits over this. They will not change out the engines for us or recall of any kind. This car was sold to me off a lot, the guy took me right to it. I bit. I'm !@#$%. There is no correcting the problem. I don't have the money to fix Dodges' way of making millions off the consumer. We will not buy american again. And yet they will go to the senate and ask for more money to get out of their jam. I say let them sink until they make a better product. Every other business out there has to learn and do the same in America, why not them??!!!! why are they not held accountable??!!!! I hope my words make a difference. Sincerely,.
My 2000 Dodge Intrepid wouldn't start without a jump for a few days in a row, so I brought it in and had it checked. The mechanic said he thought it was due to build up on the negative terminal. I also heard a noise in the engine, but all belts were checked and they were fine. 1 week later my car just died while I was driving to work. I have now learned that I need to replace the engine at a large cost. While researching the cost of this repair, I have come to learn that this is a very common problem for the 2. 7l v6 engine, and that the maker is aware of the problem, but because there have not been enough complaints, it is not worthy of addressing! I am disgusted! the way that my car died, on the road, I could have caused a major accident.
I bought this 2000 Dodge Intrepid, v-6, 2. 7 liter engine, new from a dealer in December, 1999. In 2003, with less than 40,000 miles on it, the engine seized up. The dealer contacted Chrysler, and the engine was replaced as if it had been under extended warranty. Interestingly, the dealership found no indication of excessive sludge buildup, which apparently is the basis of most complaints about this engine. I paid about $200, and was satisfied at that point. Since then, I've had lots of (relatively minor) repairs done on this car, and I would rate it below average for reliability. The car now has about 81,000 miles on it, which means the current engine has about 41,000 miles. The engine has failed again. The only warning was an intermittent (not consistent) clicking sound, which my mechanic felt was coming from the housing over the front part of the engine (where the timing gear/belt is located). Thus far, Chrysler has not responded to my request for coverage as if it were under warranty. I have reviewed many of the on-line complaints about the 2. 7 liter engine; I have talked to at least three local (non-dealership) mechanics, each of whom was familiar with sudden catastrophic failures of the 2. 7 engine, and one of whom said he personally knew of seven such failures in this local area. None of those independent mechanics would touch this repair job. This is probably an $8,000 repair job, if I choose to have it repaired. It makes no economic sense, when the trade-in value of the car is less than $2,000. Even if I replace the engine (again) I would not sell this car to another individual without describing the problems with the engine. I've read enough, and heard enough, to believe that Chrysler should be forced to initiate some sort of replacement and compensation program, at least for those of us who bought our vehicle new, have owned it continuously, have maintained it properly, have not abused it in any way, but can't afford to prosecute a lawsuit.
I was driving to work, low oil pressure light came on. Car stopped working had and extended warranty, took it to a mechanic. Mechanic found that the timing chain had broke causing the motor to go out. Per tech sludge cause the timing chain and motor to go out. Not covered under warranty due to lack of maintenance. Have only had car less than 4 months. I know their is alot of class act lawsuits on Dodge Intrepid for motor failing. Pls help!! per tech stated that their was lots of sludge in the car. I have read all the complaints on this car and they all state about the same failures. Sludge making motors and timing chains go bad.
2000 Dodge Intrepid timing chain failure. This appears to be a common defect with the 2. 7l engine. This repair may cost $1,500.
Car stalled out in December 06 and battery replaced. Stalled again in March 07 and have been told the timing belt broke and new engine needed at only 81,000 miles. Tried to see if used engine available and was told none could be found because this was typical to the Intrepid. Also told a new engine cost and labor is about $3500. We owe $4400 and pay $163 every month with two years left to pay. Were already on the brink of foreclosure on our home and we were struggling to make these car payments, we willl struggle to pay for a car that we can not even drive. I will be contacting the dealership who should have been aware of these complaints from what I've read here, and I will be contacting Chrysler who really needs to stand behind there product!no wonder everyone is going foreign!to the ceo's, enjoy those huge homes and paychecks while the rest of us pay for Chrysler's mistakes!my brother died in a Chrysler when he was 20 years old because of a steering default!this was 23 years ago, I really should have known better!!!!I'm very glad to see from these complaints that few are getting killed from this engine defect. Lucky for Chrysler, they don't have to pay up!even more lucky for the owners of these cars and anyone driving around them when they stall!!!.
On christmas day, I was driving on interstate 5 in California on my way to disneyland with my family and very quickly my engine overheated and stalled in the fast lane, thank goodness it was christmas day and there were'nt very many vehicles on the highway. We made it to the shoulder and had a tow truck pick up the vehicle for $120. My vehicle arrived at my mechanic and after a day of reviewing my vehicle he called me and told me that the timing belt failed and I broke 2 piston valves. I needed a new engine. The cost of the engine in $3,000 this is not a cost that is reasonable for a well maintained vehicle repair.
: the contact stated while driving 40 mph on normal road conditions, a noise was heard from the engine. There were no warning lights to alert the contact. Upon arrival at the contact's residence, the engine stalled and could not be restarted. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, who determined the time belt had fractured, and the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted, who informed the engine warranty expired at 36000 miles. The contact was very concerned because the engine had only 97000 miles.
Engine stopped running while I was at 55mph on a rural road late at night. Had car towed to dealership that I bought car. Timing belt and guides eng due to sludge build up. I had the oil changed every 3,000 miles from when I bought it. Dealership could not find sludge but was told this was the problem. Had repairs done after continual complaints took 5 months to get car repaired. 5 months later and 10,000 miles the engine goes again. At 21 this car sits in my dad's driveway rusting. Replacement parts could not be located. Replacement of engine I can not pay for. Chrysler will not help. I've had better help from my dog!.
: the contact stated while traveling 15 mph, the vehicle stalled and would not restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop who determined there was sludge in the oil and the timing belt snapped. The engine needed to be replaced.
2000 Dodge Intrepid with 2. 7 l engine without warning or prior problem blew up while wife driving on freeway. Lost steering due to anti-freeze on belt. She was able to get off roadway without losing control. This engine has thousands of complaints about blown engines due to sludge buildup/water pump/design problems. My vehicle was properly maintained and engine replacement will cost $5000. Chrysler should be held accountable. Us govt. Should step up and enforce recall of defective 2. 7l dohc engines!.
2. 7 Chrysler motor. The timing gears and belt were replaced by marketplace Chrysler Suzuki inc around 65000. Then the motor develops a lower knock. The same dealership then says Chrysler made a bad motor and it will cost $3200 for a new motor. Will Chrysler own up for their failure ? and put a new motor in my car free of charge.
: the contact stated there was a noise coming from the engine. It sounded as though valves were clanking. The noise occurred one day prior to the vehicle not starting. The vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealership determined the timing chain broke causing the valves to fall into the pistons. The engine needs to be rebuilt as a result.
Timing chain of 2000 Chrysler Intrepid broke while traviling at highway speed on m84 between saginaw and bay city.
The contact stated the timing chain tensioner was replaced three times. It was replaced 500 miles ago, and is currently working correctly. Updated 12/27/2005 - each time it failed it caused the engine to seize and result in loss of power steering and power brakes. The timing chain has been replaced at 64306 miles, 72687 miles and 80982 miles.
On August 18, 2005 the engine stalled while the consumer was stopping at a stop light. She was able to get safely off the road. When she took vehicle to dealer for repairs they told her that the timing chain failed and would need a new motor. There had been no previous problems with the vehicle. There were no accidents.
Contact states vehicle quit running while backing up to park. The service dealer stated the timing chain broke which caused no oil in the engine.
My 2002 Dodge Intrepid started to make a knocking sound. Made an appointment for service/repair wiyh my local mechanic. Appt was for may 5, 2002. My car never made it to the appointment. On may 4, 2002, I was driving home from a dr. Appt @ about 4:30 p. M. & my car literally shut off with no warning. I was in the middle of rush hour traffic in a no passing zone approaching a metal grate bridge wide enough for two cars to pass in opposite directions. I was able to coast over the bridge safely & had to pull over onto the side of the road (rt#322 heading west-from west chester, PA. Approx. 1 mile outside of dowingtown, PA. ) & walk on the side of the road (no sidewalks) for approx. 1/4 mile with cars whizzing by me, to nearby wawa store. Had the car towed ($45. 00 paid by me) to my mechanic who promplty told me that the timing belt had snapped & gone through the top of my enginge. Unfixable! contacted the dealer who sold me the car - "carsense" located at 21 pottstown pike, uwchland, PA 19480. They said to have the car towed up to them ($85. 00 paid by me again). Finally the next day the service rep told us the car would need to have the engine replaced to the tune of $5,600. This car only has 42,000 miles on it! I haven't even had the car for 3 years yet. I still owe $7,000 on the car. Car sense will not bear the financial responsiblity for the repairs. Did some research on the internet by typing in the search words: Dodge Intrepid engine problems & located many sites describing the same thing that happened to me. Car quits with barely a warning & dealer will not pay for repairs, but instead, blames the "lack of proper maintainance" on the owner. Websites show me otherwise. Also know of 2 people personally, who have experience the same scenario. These cars are all over the place & I can't imagine how many people this has happened to. This proves a real safety hazzard for many drivers of this car & other drivers near this car when it quits.
While driving at 35 mph, suddenly a loud tapping noise was heard from engine compartment. Then, the vehicle stalled. Vehicle was towed to the dealership. The timing chain broke. This was a common problem with these my vehicles.
Replaced timing belt at 80,000 miles. 13,000 miles later the timing belt went again and took out the entire engine. Daimler/Chrysler refuses to do anything about it and was only willing to give a 2% reduction in the cost of a new vehicle. Car has less than 100,000 miles and is a boat anchor that I am still paying on.
While driving approximately 40 mph engine inadvertently stalled. When taken to get it serviced it was determined that stalling was due to the timing chain.
2000 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 l v6 - timing chain failed while in traffic making the car inoperable. Time cover exploded. Valves are bent. Cannot be repaired. Will require entire new motor.
While driving timing chain broke. Took vehicle ito dealer to have it repaired, and was told that vehicle needed an new engine.
While driving 15 mph vehicle stalled. Consumer was unable to restart the vehicle, and had it towed to a garage for inspection. Mechanic determined that the steering power assist pump and timing belt needed to be replaced.
While driving 35 mph engine failed. The consumer stated that the timing belt failed and destroyed the engine. Dodge service dealer stated that oil sludge build up destroyed the engine.
Check oil light kept coming on, took to dealer and they repaired problem, two times to get it done. Dealer said oil pressure was fine /28/04 - timing chain failure, only 37,000 miles on car. Bought new in 2000. Engine valves were damaged. Dealer took 2 1/2 weeks to repair lso had to replace tie rod ends.
We begain experiencing an engine knock. Dealer diagnosis "rattle noise in the engine area -- noise found to be timing chain hitting front cover. Motor slightly sludged -- replaced timing chain, tensioners and guides, flused motor and changed oir and filer" total repair cost $1355. 55.
Engine died due to sludge buildup. The consumer had gone to get an oil change and was told that the serpentine belt was cracking. The oil light had come on and the dealer stated that the sensor needed to be replaced. After the consumer picked up the vehicle from the dealer for the repair of the sensor, the oil light had come back on. After about two miles of driving, the engine failed. The consumer found that the engine failed due to sludge.
While driving, suddenly there was a banging and clanging noise , from the engine compartment. It was discovered that the timing belt came off the tensioner pulley. Please provide additional information.
When driving at an undetermined speed and without warning vehicle stalled. This caused the driver to drift to the side of the road. Consumer towed the vehicle to the dealership for inspection, and mechanic determined that timing chain failed.
While driving at 40 mph consumer heard a light tapping sound coming from the engine. Several weeks later, engine started to tap very loudly. A certified mechanic examined the vehicle and found that a new engine was needed. Engine and belts were replaced.
The contact stated while driving vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to a local dealership. They replaced the timing chain, intake manifold, coolant tube, and serpentine belt. The vehicle was driven home. The vehicle drove fine for awhile. The vehicle then experienced the same problem. It was taken back to the dealership, and they replaced the chain tensioner. The vehicle drove fine again for awhile. Then it started experiencing the same problem. It was taken to an independent repair shop. They found that when the previous dealership had replaced the chain tensioner they had not tightened the bolts properly. This caused the valves and the head to be warped. No repairs were made.
2000 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 litre dealer replaced timing belt 67000($1130. 00) engine seized at 71000 miles car is sitting at dealership & I don't know what to do with it. The veil of silence when speaking to anyone from Chrysler. Thousands of people are driving these cars & have no clue the engine is going to fail. Shamefull behavior by daimler Chrysler.
I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that has about 91,500 miles. I purchased it from a Dodge dealership as a program car. My wife and I have maintained the regularly scheduled maintenance on the vehicle for as long as we've had it. On 3/2/04 my wife took the vehicle to have the oil changed and the fluids checked. On 3/3/04 my wife noticed the engine making a strange "knocking" noise. We took the vehicle back to where we got the oil change done on 3/5/04 and they stated that the noise had nothing to do with the oil change. We parked the vehicle until 3/6/04, and when my wife went out to start the vehicle and take it to the dealership, it wouldn't start. I then had the vehicle towed to the dealership on 3/8/04. The vehicle sat at the dealership from 3/8/04 to 3/12/04. On 3/12/04 I went to the dealership to find out what was going on and they said it "sounded" like the timing chain was broken. I told them I would take my vehicle to another mechanic to get a second opinion, and they gave me a diagnostic sheet with "engine failure" and a quoted repair cost of $3,100. I had the vehicle towed back home on 3/12/04 where it sat until 3/15/04. The vehicle was then towed to another mechanic where he took the time to open the engine and tell me exactly what the problem was. He advised that the timing chain tensioner was broken, which in turn threw off the timing and caused the valves to bend. He stated it would be cheaper to get another engine than try to fix this one. The cheapest used engine he could find for me was $3,650. I called the dealership back and told them my findings and they claimed it could have been because of poor maintenance. I asked how much a new engine would cost and he stated between $6,000 and $7,000. I then called the 800 number for customer service and then stated that then couldn't help. While looking through my owners manual, the timing is not scheduled to be checked until 100,000 miles.
