general problems of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid - part 1

Timing chain went do to sludge build up had to replace engine.

I bought my Dodge Intrepid in June of 2010 knocking in the engine I have never ran the car over 55 mph no warning lights came on kept car up to date on maintenance oil changing and everything else checked oil it was out had it changed 2 weeks ago and also when I added more oil in the car the oil came up on dip stick very sludgy found out I need a new engine by a mechanic.

I would like to file a complaint on the 2000 Dodge Intrepid, 2. 7l engine. I had a front end crash with no apparent engine damage. When the cosmetics were repaired and I cranked the engine again the oil light came on and it was not running smoothly. Oil light goes on and off at times and now has knock in engine. I blame this on a design flaw in the oil galleys of the 2. 7 engine.

Hello my name paula howard. My 2000 Dodge Intrepid just died while driving the other day. I called my husband, when he lifting the hood of my car there was steam coming out of the engine. He then checked the oil and saw antifreeze in the oil. I have since taken the car back to my dealership since I have owned the car for less than a year. They of course will not touch it or warranty it. They want a lot of money to even look at it. I started researching and found that I am by far not the only person with this problem. Can you help?.

While driving between 68-69 mph with the cruise control activated, the temperature gauge went high and the oil warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. 2000 Dodge Intrepid motor failure due to oil sludge buildup despite regular oil changes.

I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. Earlier this year it just failed, engine seized. Come to find out there is a problem with the 2. 7l engine seizing because of oil sludge. I was directed by a web site to file a complaint here because you were very interested in this specific item.

This is a basic vehicle complaint that I feel Dodge/Chrysler should be made to fix on their 2. 7l engines. I and after searching the internet have found that many people are having the same problem with this problem with their 2000 Dodge Intrepid and the company is doing nothing to help fix it when it is a known issue with the engine. Other mechanics have said the same thing. I think that some authority should look into this and have them recall this engine. People pay a lot of money for their vehicles and need them to work.

Engine and transmission and a/c failure of Dodge Intrepids.

I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid and have had the oil sending unit pressure switch and a few other things replaced on my vehicle and yet the oil light still comes on in my vehicle and I can't keep affording to take it in to a shop and I maintain the oil changes before the 3000 miles if not exactly on the 3000 miles. I would really like to find out if they have any kind of recall on this type of situation.

He attempted to pull over, but the brakes malfunctioned and would not stop properly. The contact was forced to coast to a stop. He exited the vehicle and notified the police. Flames began to appear from under the engine and hood. The police and fire departments arrived, stabilized the fire, and towed the vehicle. The insurance company then towed the vehicle to their salvage yard to investigate. The contact has still not heard back from the insurance company. A police report was filed. Purchased car last week (April of 08'). On my way home ( 100mi drive) from picking up car the motor started knocking then locked up in the middle of the interstate. Had to have car towed back to my dads house and are now trying to sale the car we just bought. It will be hard to sale a car with a locked up motor.

No warnings lights illuminated when the failure occurred. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was determined that the motor failed and the repair cost would be $7,000. No repairs have been made. The manufacturer informed the contact to take the vehicle a different dealer to be inspected. The failure mileage was 78,000.

The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. While driving at an unknown speed, the engine sputtered. The contact drove to a gas station and turned off the vehicle. When she attempted to restart it, there was no power. The vehicle was towed to a Dodge dealer. The dealer would not provide her with a rental vehicle to drive while they had her vehicle. The transmission type was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 73,000.

Engine blew up.

We bought a 2000 Dodge Intrepid, used, has 112k miles on it. Engine is ticking, about to blow a rod. My husband is a mechanic, he did some research on the engine and found the problem to be sludge build up. Jumped online and found tons of issues with these 2. 7l engines. I've emailed, called, written letters to Chrysler / Dodge and have had no luck obtaining a response back from them. I think it's ridiculous that they created a disposable car. According to the previous owners, the engine began having heating problems, then the noise began around 95k, the parked the car and put it up for sale. That's when we bought it. We had planned on fixing it and then having another family vehicle. Now that we realize we'll have to sink about $2,000 or more into it, we're not happy.

After starting the car the engine, it began to make a "rattle" noise that went away after a few seconds. Took it into a shop and they said nothing was wrong. 9 months later, the car would not start -> the dealership said the engine would need to be replaced (the car has ~72,000 miles). I now need to either buy a new engine, or sell it for parts (the cost of the repair will nearly equal the value of the vehicle. I would not have expected to replace a 2000 Dodge Intrepid engine so early. From what I can tell, many other people have had the same problem with this Chrysler engine: what are my options?.

Our vehicle is a 2000 Dodge Intrepid which will need the entire engine replaced due to "oil sludge" build-up in the 2. 7 liter engine. The cost to replace this engine with another used engine (which may develop the same problem) has been estimated at approximately $4,000 at the local Dodge dealer. To replace this with a new engine would cost an additional $1000-$1500. The dealer indicates he may not even be able to find a replacement engine. We cannot afford to have this work done, but have no choice and the cost will totally deplete our savings account. This vehicle has about 76,000 miles on it. I have learned from some investigation that this is an extremely wide-spread problem that Chrysler has refused to acknowledge. I have contacted daimler-Chrysler directly and they have expressed their "sincere apology", but note that there is nothing they will be able to do about it. I have read complaints from other owners on carcomplaints. Com as well as other websites. This is a problem with the 2. 7 liter engines on many Chrysler vehicles (intrepid, sebring, etc. ). Consumers should not have to pay the cost of a design flaw. Many of the people who have had this happen to them are still making payments and cannot even afford to have the repairs made! some have had their vehicles stop on them in the middle of the highway. We are lucky to have identified a problem (via an engine "noise") before something more serious occurred. This is a safety hazard for anyone who has a vehicle with this engine and it involves 1999-2003 vehicles. Please look into this problem. It is extremely widespread and daimler-Chrysler should accept responsibility for selling a defective product.

Own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7l engine that failed due to oil sludge at 59k miles. The car is now worthless and is sitting in my driveway. I am the original owner and change the oil arroding to the requirements in the owner's manual.

2000 Intrepid 2. 7 l motor seized with only 115,000 miles, good maintenance. With no warning, noises or fanfare the motor simply seized up. We had just gotten it out of the body shop from a fender bender (to the tune of $2500) and now I have a worthless husk of a car - it costs more to replace the motor than the car is worth. . . . . Guess that is what we call a disposable society. . . The last mopar I will ever buy. . . . . . .

Oil sludge caused motor to fail at 80,000 miles.

Engine malfunctioned. No warning ,and was driving down the highwy at about 60 mph and the engine just quit running.

The Dodge dealership says it was due to sludge build up due to me not doing routine oil changes but, my mechanic begs to differ. He performed the proper oil changes on the car every three months. I still have this car sitting in my driveway from a year ago. It will cost me $4,000 for a new engine and someone to due the work.

I brought the vehicle on 9/14/2004. The vehicle stop functioning on December 21. The car wasn't functioning until June of 2005. To repair the car it cost $4,500, we had to change the motor. I took the vehicle to the dealership, texas star motors in June. On December I left the car on maryland mall, and the keys at the dealership so that they could go get the car. They knew that we were going to interchange cars. On December I went out of town and no one stayed in charge of the car. On the first week of January they said the car was ready but they didn't know where to locate me. When I showed to the dealership they were already selling the car to some other people. I talked to a salesperson at the dealership, but she didn't even know what car I had exchange. The car was insured until January. I couldn't interchange the car unless she paid two more years of insurance which I had already agreed to pay only one year. By the dealership the car cost $1,785. I wanted to interchange the car and give an down payment of $1000. The owner wanted me to give the $1000 and go exchange the car in a different dealership. If I waited the two years to make the interchange it would had been too long. I stop paying on December 29, 2005. The next payment was due on January 15 and they send a letter of late payment on January 14, which made no sense because the payment was not even due on that date yet.

The contact stated engine locked while driving. He had the vehicle towed to the dealership. They dropped the oil pan and found the oil was sludge, and there were metal shavings from the bearings. They stated the problem was due to improper maintenance, although they were at the service center, where maintenance was performed. The vehicle needed a new engine, and no repairs were made due to the expense.

Traveling down the highway at 55 mph and car started missing and just died as we were going down the road. We barely managed to get it off of the highway.

While my husband was on his way to work from our home in yacolt wa. Heading to salem or. , the engine in our 2000 Dodge Intrepid quit without warning, he was on I-205 at 5:00 am in the dark he easily could have been killed as well as endangered others on the highway. This vehicle had been maintained very well and we have owned since 17,00 miles. I now am aware that there are hundreds of people that this has happened to and yet the daimler-Chrysler corp. Has not acted to inform the consumers that this is a problem or a safety issue. We have three children who up until two months ago were always in this vehicle with me because it was my daily driver. It could have happened quite easily while my children were in the car on a major roadway.

Contact owned a 2000 Dodge Intrepid and the engine seized while driving on 7-31-05. It just stopped. It had been making intermittent noises for about 1 week prior, but nothing constant. It sputtered before quitting. Contact has not talked to the dealer but she planned on doing so.
