I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid ES with the 2. 7 liter engine. The VIN on the vehicle 2c3hh56u7yh176851. I say that I own it, but there are still 13 payments remaining on it. The car was purchased from wells fargo finance company in early 2001 for my wife. At that time, the vehicle had about 12,000 to 15,000 miles on it. My wife passed away in may of 2002 and since then the car has not been driven on a daily basis. Hence, the vehicle has about 37,000 - 39,000 miles on it. While running an errand with my granddaughter on July 8, 2005, the engine started to sputter and I had to manipulate the gas pedal to get the vehicle the few miles to home. The vehicle would not start after that. I called to have the vehicle towed to a nearby mechanic and he mentioned that they found about a quarter of an inch of sludge after removing the valve cover. The mechanic stated that the only thing that could be done is an engine replacement. He ensured me that trying to clean the sludge may cause further damage. I started investigating this via the internet and found your web site. I called Chrysler and opened a case number with them. Case # 13842278. After about an hour on hold, a person came back to me and stated that the car came to the u. S. From canada via a leasing company and that the warranty did not transfer, therefore there was nothing he or Chrysler could do. He also stated that because it came from a leasing company, there was the possibility that the engine maintenance records could not be verified. So, the bottom line is that I still am making payments on a 2000 Dodge Intrepid, that I can't drive, that I can't afford to have fixed, and that no one will assist. Can you provide the phone number of the "zone rep" for my area (see below).
2. 7l long block failure in 2000 Dodge intepid. Have done all oil changes and other maintenance at proper schedule. Without warning engine started knocking terribly. Noticed sludge upon checking oil. The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle totally lost power. The contact was nearly struck by a large truck. The vehicle was towed to a Chrysler dealer and the mechanic stated that the engine had a lot of oil sludge. The entire engine had to be replaced at the cost of $7,400. The manufacturer only offered to pay $1,000 of the repair cost. The contact feels that the manufacturer should cover the entire cost because this was a common failure among many consumers. The failure mileage was 106,000 and current mileage is 106,000. Updated 04/21/08.

Second engine replacement due to the well known 2. 7 l engine problems "oil sludge" ---- how can this continue to happen to so many with no class action suit taking place???.
At less than 100,000 miles the engine blew. Several repair shops advised us that they are seeing a rash of the same exact problem with the Dodge Intrepid. After doing some research on line, we found over 100 people that logged the same problem with their Intrepid. Even the junk yards have told us they've had a rash of call about the engines going bad after 100,000 miles.
There was a loud knocking coming from the engine. Consumer proceeded to the shoulder of the road, turned the vehicle off and on and the noise was still there. Vehicle was towed, and the engine was found to be defective.
Oil light came on without any other warning. Stopped car to check oil and it was full. Car would not start. Called dealer and told him what happened, they asked for oil change receipts even before the saw the car. Towed it to dealer who charged $230 to take engine apart so the extended warranty company could come in to see it. They denied the claim because of lack of maintenance. I bought the car used and it had 21,000 miles on it. The first time I took it to have the oil changed they told me it had sludge. I paid to have the engine cleaned and changed the oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles myself after that. When I called Chrysler to see about them covering it I was greeted with the person telling me I should have taken my oil pan off to check for problems hen I changed my oil. He told me I was full of s**t when I told him no one does that. After that comment I asked to speak to his supervisor and was told to go f*** myself. I tried filing a complaint with the better business bureau and was told they couldn't do anything about Chrysler's customer service people and unless I could provide them with receipts they could file a complaint against Chrysler either. Is everyone in detroit in on this conspiracy? now I am stuck owing $5,500 on a car I can't drive or sell. I called a junk yard about selling it to them and they said the best they could do would be $600. The man said he gets about 3 calls a week about the Intrepid either someone getting rid of one or looking for an engine. So here the car sits in my garage while I try to find something to get me back and forth to work.
Driving to work about 35 mph, engine just stopped, no warning, was told by mechanic rod/piston siezed up. Need to replace motor. Had 85000 miles and extended warranty did not cover.
My Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7l engine started knocking then locked up while driving so I took to dealer and they said it was neglect and I told them I follow maintence scedule to a t with 3000 mile oil changes and all they told me it was sludged up and will not fix this . This is a defective design when a well maintained car dies at 60,000 miles .
2. 7l Dodge Intrepid. Went to start car one morning, car did'nt start, had car towed to dealer and was told motor blown because we did'nt flow the oil change time frame in book. I advised them we changed oil more often then book said. They wanted $6000. 00 to fix car. I still owe $368. 00 per month and total of $9100. 00 on car for the next 3 years. I don't have, and should not have to put out 6000. 00 on a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. I had the car towed home with all the parts in trunk. Then on Thursday I saw on abc7chicago. Com news report called "the sludge report" and it was my same car with the same motor. I am now faced with the tought for (1) letting them take the car and ruinning our credit (2) leaving it in my garage until I can come up with 6000. 00 to fix it. Since I have had to buy a used car + insure this car + insure the Intrepid along with making monthly payment on a car that doesnt run along with towing, machanic fees, it has caused my family so much stress and financal problems it is not funny! can anything be done about it? do you know if there is a class action lawsuit and if so, how can we be a part of that? is there a message board we can go to and see postings of other people with this same problem? the report on the news said there are many, many consumers out there with this same problem with this kind of motor. What can be done about this faulty motor?.

2000 Dodge Intrepid blew an engine at 49,000 miles and needs to be replaced. Clearly the engine is faulty. The dealership who sold me the car will not offer much assistence, nor will daimler/Chrysler.
The timing chain broke on my 2000 Dodge Intrepid as I was driving down the road. As a result, the timing chain and guide and all the valves had to be replaced resulting in a bill of over 6,000 dollars. This happened within 100 miles of the factory warranty expiring. The manufacturer nor the retailer would do anything whatsoever to assist in the repairs.
