Car was maintained imaculately, 3 weeks before the doa date, there was a very faint ticking sound (like a roulette wheel spining "click" sound) coming from under the hood. Took the car to the mechanic to have the oil changed and have the cars new noise checked. He said it could be a lifter ticking and the oil change solved the problem. He was correct about the sound muting however the issue may be the tiny oil port holes in these Mitsubishi made mopar engines. On the day of the engines death it made the same ticking sound, my cue that I could share with anyone about to have this failure occur, when I would start the car I noticed an extra "spinning" sound under the hood when I would start the car. It is minor so listen close to your start-up. The ticking got louder and eventually at a stop light on the way to the mechanic the car stopped and would not run. Do an internet search for Dodge Intrepid 2000 2. 7 liter motor you will find a horror show on the internet. Loved the car while it worked but the death was too premature, I only drive about 8,000 miles per year.

I was on my way home, after work 6:30pm when my engine star sounding funny (tapping noise) then a loud noise, and the car stop, I'm not a mechanic so all I did was call a toll truck, and bring the car to the shop, the next day I got a call from the shop, they told me that the timing chain was broken and the valves bend, (I need a new engine) I was told that with labor and parts it'll be around $4500. 00 dls. I pull the car out of the shop and bring this to my garage, where is been sitting for the last 2 weeks.
The contact heard a ticking noise coming from the lower end of the engine. Approximately a week ago the contact's son told him the oil light was flickering on and off. When he changed the oil he found a metallic shimmer in the oil with larger flakes of metal. The vehicle has been routinely maintained. The vehicle has not been inspected by the dealer to determine the problem.
I am the owner of a 2000 Dodge Intrepid (2. 7 model) while on my way to work my car began to make a strange ticking noise that grew louder I stop at a four way intersection to find out where the noise was coming from and that is when my car cut off and would not start back up and had to be towed to the dealership where the service manager after checking told me that my car slung a rod so to speak and would need a new engine an that a replacement would cost 4900 I am highly upset because I am still making payments on what I thought would be a decent american made car instead I am stuck with a piece of junk that still has not been fixed I will never buy another Dodge or Chrysler again.
The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. Purchased vehicle with 50, 000 miles on it. The next day drove car and felt vibration in front end. Thought it may be tires. Consumer had the tires balanced and that did not fix the problem. Then, the oil light came on. The pressure gauge came on during idling. Took vehicle back to dealership and they replaced the oil pressure gauge. But, problem still not fixed. The transmission acted funny , when applying brakes vehicle would not slow down , it was like it was still in gear . The steering made noises when turning it to the right or left, a clanking noise . The rear suspension clanked every time hitting a bump. The engine had a high pitched wining. This happened as soon as vehicle was purchased.
Had car 8 months with three oil changes drove 9,000 miles total, heard clicking noise when engine started that morning, two hours later car stalled and heard loud knock from engine, had car towed and inspected by ase certified mechanic, was told car need new engine couldn't be fixed, due to sludge in engine.
I tried to start my 2000 Dodge Intrepid one day and heard loud clinking noises coming from the engine. I had it towed to the garage and was told that a timing chain had broken and that I needed a new engine that would cost $6,000. I only have 70,000 miles on the car. My oil was changed every 3000 miles as instructed by the owners manual.
I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that I bought in October of 2003, in September of 2004 the engine light came on and wouldn't go off. After spending $900. 00 and 2 towing bills the Dodge dealer finally got the light to stay off by replacing the cam and crank sensors. Approx 6 1/2 months later in April of 2005 while driving at 20 miles per hour the engine started making a loud clicking noise. I took it to my regular mechanic that told me a rod had blown in the engine. He told me it would probably run me around $5000. 00 to repair. He also said he's heard about alot of problems with these engines. I think Dodge should be doing something about this especially after I see by your complaint list I'm not the only one. I still owe almost as much as they say it will cost me to repair it.
Engine ticking noise resulting in replacing engine. All expense was out of my pocket even after contacting Chrysler.
I was driving down I-75 in ohio when suddenly the engine made a clanging noise and died. It happened 400 hundred miles from home. I had to pay to have the car towed home. It happened on February 22 2005. The car is still broke as I cannot afford the 4500 to 7000 repair bill.
On Dec. 26 2004, as we were leaving our house the car starting making a ticking sound, we pulled back into the driveway and checked the oil, transmission fluid and hoses. No lights were on to indicate a promblem but we parked the car since it was a noise we had never heard. The next morning, Monday, we called our mechanics and had the car towed in, the mechanic asked about the oil changes and I told him to check the date on the window I knew it was recent. He stated he was shocked due to the sludge build up in the engine. I infromed him I have regular oil changes and have the receipts. He suggested to clean adn replace the oil pan and filter totaling $800. 00, he did the work. Thursday Dec 30 I got the car back but did not drive it due to the holiday weekend. Monday morning on a 2 lane road 37 miles from home the car would not accelerate the all the sudden the car started to rapidly decrease speed and then shut off. I was able to barely get the car off the road before being hit by an oncoming 18 wheeler. I had the car towed back in and was told that due to the oil sludge I needed a new engine. The promblem is they refused to "get involved" due to the numerous complaints and class action law suits regarding the 2. 7 engines. I contacted my local Dodge dealer and was told "I sympathize and have heard of this before but the best I can do is $7800-8200. 00 for a new engine but can not warranty sludge build up. I only owed $6000on the car. After contacting 2 more dealers and being told they could not warranty it against the same thing happening again they did not want to do the work. This engine is a sludge engine and almost cost me mylife as well as my 2 kids that were in the car! something needs to be done!.
Engine began making a clicking sound while driving on the highway at 55mph. Ase certified master technician looked at the vehicle and said that I need a new engine as it is about to cease up due to oil sludge build-up which is common in this particular engine. I maitained my vehicle with routine oil changes and services through my father, who is an ase certified master technician for over 35 years. I feel that daimlerchrysler corporation should be held accountable for these deffective engines.
The contact was having problems with the engine about one year and half ago. It was making a slight clicking noise. It made loud boom noise and it had no power . It quit running about one year ago. The contact towed it back to the house, and the dealership told him that engine malfunctioned. The contact maintained oil changes as recommended. The engine had 90,000 miles on it. He reported not having any problems with the engine prior to hearing the clicking noise.
(1) I was driving my 2000 Dodge Intrepid and a clicking noise began to come from the engine area. The clicking noise proceeded to get louder and louder at which point I parked the car in a parking lot and called a relative to pick me up. I originally purchased this previously owned vehicle from carmax in 2001 with 20,000 miles. The car now has 80,000 miles and has received regular maintenance. (2) I had my vehicle towed to a local shop and was informed the engine needed to be replaced due to sludge buildup in the engine. Two other local shops also suggested replacing the engine due to the same reason. I was further notified that many people have had the same engine problem with this vehicle and that there should be a recall for this problem. (3) currently, I am getting engine replaced with remanufactured engine for around $4,900.
Started car on a Saturday morning only with the same small tapping noise as from the last couple of days. No check engine light had come up until going down the freeway a very loud noise, lost of power and finally a check light came on. Exited freeway drove a couple of miles to a friends home to leave car. After calling the huntington beach Dodge service dept on Monday and providing oil change records . The extended warrinty service people have decline my claim to fix engine claiming that the oil change service dept at walmart started the engine without oil and cause engine faliure. I find this claim by the first extended service corp to be wrong, since in my personnal experience and by viewing all the oil changes that have been taken care of by walmart , they have never started a cars engine without oil.
While turning a corner at 15 mph the consumer heard a popping sound coming from the engine. The engine was idling roughly just before the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who found that there was a build up of sludge in the engine.
As I drove south-bound on interstate 95 (in maryland) I noticed my oil light blinked 2 times; a short time later, I heard a tapping sound under the hood.
Engine in 2000 Chrysler Intrepid started tapping noise at 58017km brought to dealer with complaint, told they would not take engine apart to check noise. I told them I had been told that the 2. 7 engine had problems with sludge that prevented the oil from circulating properly. They still refused to check engine. At just over 62000 km engine became noisy. Brought it back to dealer who kept the car for two weeks, then told me engine needed to be replaced at a cost of $6500. 00 and there would be no warranty coverage or goodwill. I gave them a complete history of maintenance records showing that proper maintenance was done with in the required mileage and time. They have told me that the invoices do not clearly identify my 2000 black Intrepid and that it could of been another car. I only own one 2000 Intrepid. The invoice shows the work the mileage and my name and date. Next me they told me the invoice numbers were too close together. The work was done at four different garages. Then they told me there was sludge that showed the vehicle was not properly maintained. Then they asked me the brand of oil the garages used as it may have been faulty. End result is that they refuse to change their position in regards to warranty coverage or goodwill repairs and I will have to replace an engine that was bought brand new in may 2001. I am frustrated and do not know where to turn. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I was driving my 2000 Dodge Intrepid with my wife and son on the highway when suddenly, there was a loud clicking noise coming from the engine the following day I took the car to my dealer, who informed me that I needed a new engine because the rod had went. The car has only 48000 miles and I have the maximum care protection which covers just about everything. Coverage was denied because I did not have the receipts for oil the changes I had performed religously and the engine had developed sludge. I have since read on several sites that this is a problem with 2. 7l engine and Chrysler refuses to due anything about it. I am now stuck paying for a car that needs approx. $6000 dollars worth of work. The only thing I am grateful for is that nobody was hurt. Thank god the rod did not go through the engine wall.
I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 liter and it started making a ticking noise and then one day in April my engine just quit while I was driving it down the road. I sent them a letter and they said there was nothing they could do because my warranty was up, but who puts a 36,000 mile warranty on a vehicle unless they know the engine is junk. They need to fess up to their defect of this type of engine and recall it. It is not right. I am a 23 year old single mother who still owes 10,000 dollars on a car that I can't even drive because I didn't have 6,000 dollars to give them for a new engine.
The engine stalled without warning, prior to the incident, the vehicle made a ticking noise.
I own a 2000 Intrepid by Dodge with approximately 43000 miles on it. The engine has been blown and I was informed that we have to pay for the repair to be done because of sludge in the engine. . I have an extended warranty on this vehicle that I bought at the time of purchase. . Because of the fact that we do our own oil changes and the only thing we are guilty of is not keeping receipts that we have bought oil and filters to change it. . We have documentation on dates and mileage that we have had them done. . In fact the last one was done at a place of business. The vehicle started making a clanking noise while I was driving , no warning light or any such light came on the instrument panel whatsoever I proceeded to pull over in a parking lot and shut the car off, and it would not start, I had the car towed to dealership. . They have now had my car for 3 weeks at the dealership. Dodge corporate is saying that they have nothing to do with this complaint because of the fact that the extended warranty is not through them, the dealership can use whom ever they want to for extended warranties. I have searched many complaints and this is an ongoing problem with these engine's. My extended warranty is for 7 years or 75000 mile which ever comes first. . I had a different dealership look at my car first and we had to pay them almost 400. 00 to have them look at the vehicle and tell us the warranty people will not fix it. They also informed us that the time chaining had blown and when that happens yes there will be sludge and whatever else. Which why you have to replace the whole engine. I have researched this and know that there is numerous complaints on this particular car and engine. Please can you advise and help. . As an added note the car also smells like it is burning oil.
