Failure Date: 09/15/2008

I have been getting my oil changed regularly since I both the car in 2007. When I bought the car it only had about 65000 miles. Now in 2008 it has a little over 85000. I was driving one day and all of a sudden my car started making a knocking noise. Within a couple of miles of the noise started my car completely broke down in the middle of the street. There I was in the middle of the street not able to go anywhere. Luckily a cop came by who called a tow truck. After towing the car to the auto repair shop, I was told that my engine needed to be replaced due to oil sludge. I am very disappointed in this. I have low miles, proper maintenance to the car, and now I need a new engine.

6 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2008

The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 40 mph, the motor began making a knocking noise. Within minutes, the motor completely failed. The contact managed to restart the vehicle and pulled over at a gas station. He checked the oil in the vehicle and noticed that it barely had any oil. He added oil to the vehicle, hoping it would correct the failure, which it did for 3 or 4 miles. The contact then had to pull over once again for the motor noises. The vehicle was towed to a shop and the mechanic stated that the motor was shot due to a spun main bearing. The engine was replaced 9,000 miles prior to this recent failure. The dealer stated that there was no oil in the engine and, as a result, the failure was not covered under warranty. The contact called the manufacturer's costumer service hotline and they stated that they would have the dealer diagnose the failure again. He is still awaiting their response. The contact discovered thousands of complaints on other websites related to this engine failure. The speed was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 87,000.

8 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 02/29/2008

There have been several problems with my 2000 Intrepid 2. 7l. I have had to replace all the door lock motors at different times, starting all the way back from 1/8/04 and the final one was just this month (February. ) I was having an issue with the car stalling out while I was driving it. Some times it would start back up while it was still coasting, other times it would take a long time before it would start again, leaving me sitting on the side of the road. When hooked up to a diagnostic machine it would not show what caused the malfunction. My mechanic had to change random censors until we found the correct one. Which turned out to be the crank sensor. This problem was occurring around February/March of 2007, with only 60,121 mileage when the first one was replaced. Then this past Wednesday, 2/27/08, the engine started to make a knocking sound. We thought maybe it was due to the extremely cold weather we were having. It did not due it after the car was heated up. When I was driving home from picking up my kids today, Friday 2/29/08, the engine started knocking very loudly and lost power. I did make it to my driveway but just barely. I still owe quite a bit for the car and now I don't have anything to drive and can't even trade the vehicle in. After searching the internet to try to find a replacement engine I have found that this is a very common thing with this engine. I have 73,945 miles on the car.

9 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2007

While driving my 2000 Dodge Intrepid to work on a busy interstate, I noticed a loud knocking noise coming from the engine and the accelerator not responding properly. The engine then started bucking and racing while I tried to wrestle it to the next exit. The car got as far as the end of the exit ramp before it stopped running and would not restart. The vehicle was then towed to a local repair shop. Later that day, I was informed by the owner of the shop that the timing chain broke, resulting in bent valves and the engine needing replacement at a cost of approximately $4000!! I just finished paying off the vehicle in September. With only 69,000 miles and the manufacturers routine maintenance schedules adhered to, this vehicle's engine should not have failed this early in the game.

10 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2007

Need assistance in repair to my 2000 Dodge Intrepid. I was told about the lawsuit against Chrysler caused by bad engines. My Intrepid has a 2. 7 liter engine. I was current on all my oil changes, it started off smoking all the time even after oil changes, knocking noises, also experienced bad driver side window. The lawsuit was told to me by a mechanic, and was also stated that Chrysler would reimburse the value of the car, or repair car need to hear from someone ASAP!!!! thank you.

11 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2007

I got a loan on a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. It has been nothing but expense after expense. It didn't want to start, so I took to a Dodge service place. They said it was a crank shaft positioning sensor, which cost me $582. 00 to have it fixed. Two weeks later it didn't want to start again. They said it was the cam shaft sensor, which cost me another $284. 00 to have it fixed. Each time that the Dodge service department had the car, they supposedly did a 24 point inspection after fixing it, and it passed the inspection both times. So, a week and a half later, there was some really loud knocking sounds coming from the motor. The Dodge service place said that the whole lower unit on the engine is shot, so it needs either an overhaul or a new motor. I got some quotes over the phone to either fix the motor or replace the motor with a new motor. For overhauling the motor, which includes parts and labor, they want at least $4300. 00. To put a new motor in they want $4600. 00. I bought the car used for over $7000. 00, not including the finance and interest charges. Now in order to fix the car, I would have to pay out a whole lot more than half of what the car cost to begin with. The Dodge service places say that the 2. 7 motors are not made well, because they have too small of an opening for the oil to be dispersed correctly throughout the engine. My Intrepid only has 102,000 miles on it. So I am stuck paying for a car that cannot be driven, unless I want to be stranded somewhere. I still owe on the car, so I am paying payments and keeping insurance on a car I cannot afford to fix. Shouldn't there be a warning somewhere on these vehicles, about the chances of sludge build up causing the engine to fail? shouldn't Dodge stand behind their vehicles, and put some kind of recall on these motors? what are people like me to do? am I just suppose to pay and pay on a car that I would have to drive at my own risk, of the engine failing at any given moment?.

Failure Date: 04/13/2006

On, April 13th, 2006 while driving down interstate 75; my 2000 Dodge Intrepid began making a knocking noise. I was traveling in rush hour traffic and immediately following the knocking noise the car began to loose power. I was attempting to move my car to the nearest emergency lane when the engine quit and locked up. After causing a major traffic jam I was able to get my car off the road. The tow truck operator who came to pick up my car stated that the Intrepid with the 2. 7l engines have a defect and I would need to file a complaint. He stated that his company could put a rebuilt engine in the car, it would cost 4500. 00. But he suggested just getting another vehicle. He said it is an engine problem and even a new engine would have the same problem. I was fortunate to not have my two young children in the car when this happened and that I was not injured when my car suddenly stopped while every other vehicle around me was traveling at 65 mph.

25 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2005

I was driving the car on a busy highway when the engine started to make a knocking noise. It stalled 2 times and then just died. I am disabled, a single mother of 2 and the car became uncontrollable for me to get it off to the side. We drifted down the road till we stopped at a better location. I called for a tow truck and help to get me and my 2 sons home. The car was towed to brown daub Dodge where it was purchased new. They said the engine failed and it would cost anywhere from 5,000 to 8,000 to repair. They blamed it on maintenance. The car had been very well maintained. The service manager told me you had to use a special oil (5w30) instead of 10w30 because of problems with the 2. 7l engines. I checked my records and during the warranty period I took the car to them every 3,000 miles and they were using 10w30 . The repair shop where I took my car to after the warranty was over was using 5w30 the correct oil. I am living on social security disability benefits to support myself and my 2 sons. I have no means of coming up with this money and should not have too. Chrysler should be held accountable for the notorious engine/transmission failures in these cars. I have a friend who use to work for Chrysler and said he couldn't work for a company where the were told to "say nothing" but what the told him to tell people in these situations. This could have been a potentially deadly accident for us. Brown daub will accept no liability for using the wrong oil and I contacted Chrysler and they won't do anything either. I am know under the emotional stress of being stranded without a car and have to rely on whatever help I can find to get myself to my doctor appts. To follow up on my disability and get my children where they need to be.

27 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2005

Our 2000 Dodge Intrepid starting making knocking sounds. We brought it in and were told that there was sludge buildup and that a new engine is needed but it is not covered under the warranty that we purchased because the buildup is from poor maintenance. We told them that we had the oil changed regularly but this did not make a difference and we are currently trying to find a way to pay for a new engine in the car. I have checked this out on the internet and found hundreds of other people that have had the same problem and that their warranty is also not being honored. First there is an engine that is defective in the car and then they won't even honor a warranty that we paid for. I am very frustrated.

28 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Knocking sound in engine compartment at 65000 miles. Told by local Dodge dealer that I had a case of catastrophic engine failure - price for new engine & labor $6500.
