I was driving and all of a sudden something started bonging and I looked down to notice that the check engine light was light up and then the check oil light came on. I was trying to pull over so that I could get out of traffic but the steering wheel froze up and made it extremely difficult to steer so that I could get out of traffic. Finally, after trying to steer the dead car out of traffic I called aaa and they towed it to the mechanic who has come to the conclusion it is the engine. It has been sitting there ever since due to the amount of money it will cost me to fix. After doing research regarding issues with the Dodge Intrepid I have come to see that I am not the only one having this problem. Dodge has known about this issue and refuses to send out a recall. 52 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 01/18/2006

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7 liter v6 engine that just turned 73,000 miles last week. On 1/18/06 was running errands when the engine light came on and approximately 20 seconds later the car shut down. It would not restart. I called aaa to have the car towed to the dealership and I called the dealership to let them know it was on its way in. The service rep. At the dealership called on Thursday morning for approval to replace (2) sensors in the engine (one dealing with the crank shaft) before they could even get the car started to determine what the engine noise was. I gave the okay for the $322. 00 sensors to be installed and was told they would get back to me later. The service rep. Did call a short while later and said that I needed a new engine and that the cost would be $5,300. 00 plus tax (this includes the two sensors)! I asked the rep. That if I had gotten the car in sooner if I could have avoided this problem. I was told that the timing chain or tooth or something could have shifted or broken inside the engine and that the small pieces of metal circulating inside would have caused irreversible damage in 12-15 miles so that there was nothing I could have done. When asked if this was normal for a car well maintained and with 73,000 miles on it, the service rep. Told me no. My husband called the owner of the dealership on Thursday and asked if anything could be done about the price. The owner told my husband that he would look into it and get back to him. On Friday the owner called and informed my husband that there was nothing he could do locally (after 50,000 miles the warranty is expired) and gave him a 1-800 number to call the daimler Chrysler customer assistance center. I have records of every service performed on this car. The oil has been changed every 3,000 miles and all maintenance, with the exception of new tire installation) has been performed at the dealership.

55 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2003 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 09/27/2005

Purchased 2003 Dodge Intrepid 6/3/05, as used. While driving a couple weeks after purchase, engine light illuminated. Took car back to dealership while still under dealership 30 day warranty. Informed car had faulty O2 sensor and sensor was replaced. August 9th, driving with young daughter at night at approximately 50 mph, car made 'pop' sound, engine and oil light both illuminated, car engine died, but was able to veer onto shoulder of road without being hit by other cars. Called dealership where car was purchased and was told to bring it back. Car was found to have faulty cam sensor. Cam sensor was replaced-at my expense. Almost out of the month of September, was driving this car on the 26th, once again with my young daughter when engine light illuminated, car felt as though down shifted hard through all gears, then transmission acting as if not proper shifting. Close to local auto zone which I had them run diagnostics on. Found "transmission system failure. " the computer of the car was reset at auto zone. Called local Dodge dealership and was told to bring it in the next morning. Was informed that because the computer had been reset they could not repeat, nor find the problem. Was told that the problem was "more than likely 2 sensors," and to continue driving this car until the light comes on again, then notify the dealership. So, now I have the pleasure of driving a car that I know in the month of October will have some sort of "sensor" failure, if not outright major transmission damage. Did I mention I have only owned this car since June? I have no idea if the previous owner was notified of service bulletins. I would think that as much as I owe on the car (over $10,000. 00), the year (2003), the mileage (43,000 miles) would at the very least guarantee me a road worthy, safe vehicle. My son owns a '99 Dodge neon clunker that I just bought for $1000. 00 that is becoming apparently more reliable than my pricey luxury ride.

56 Check Engine Light On problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 09/21/2005

The problems with my Intrepid started with my check engine light coming on and it had stalled out on me a few times. I had my oil changed and had a diagnostic run and was told I had to bring it to a Dodge dealer if the light came on again. On Friday sept 16th I brought my car to a local dealer. I was told that if I needed to have the cam and crankshaft sensor replaced or the car would most likely leave me on the side of the road. So after paying $400 dollars for my two sensors I drove away happily thinking everything was ok. So, on Monday sept 19, 2005 I retrieved my 99 Dodge Intrepid from the local dealer. On Wednesday sept 21 2005, yes two days later, I was on the side of the road with a dead car. On a busy highway I waited with an active toddler and my "fixed car" for two hours. Now from everything I have been reading, it seems I do not have a unique situation. My car is right over 80,000 mile my extended warranty was up to 79,000 miles. I have 2 years before it is paid off and do not have enough money to fix/replace the engine or have a down payment for another car and two notes.

1999 Dodge intrepeid--2. 7l engine I was driving to work going 70 miles an hour when all of a sudden the car jerked and then the engine light came on and I coasted over to the side of the road. Once over to the side of the road, I tried to restart car and it was completely dead. Failure Date: 08/18/2005

I was driving to work when all of a sudden the car jerked real hard and the engine light came on and the car completely lost power. I coasted over to the side of the highway and tried restarting the car but it would not restart. Had car towed to dealership where they found my camshaft was not turning and my timing chain had broke and they were pretty certain it had done extensive damage to the engine. They told me it could be well over $5,000 to get fixed and just for them to even start to investigate how bad the damage was it would cost me at least $600. 00. I did have to pay them $102 just for a diagnostic test plus two tow bills. My car only had 85,000 miles on it! what a rip-off! the comment section on the receipt from the dealer said no promises--well no kidding they knew what was going on.

61 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2002 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 08/08/2005

Have had 2002 Dodge Intrepid in the dealers shop in various occasions the transmission not going into gear or shifting hard at the wrong speeds. We have had issues with the gears since the day we bought it '2003. We are continuously told nothing is wrong that they cannot duplicate the action. Last month it wouldn't go into gear or when it did it moved slowly then the engine shut off. We were told once again they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Recently 8/8/05 it begin kicking and bucking while driving on 8/9/05 the service tech told us it is something totally different a "cam sensor" that they "think is possibly bad or more internal issues with the engine. " all through it they cannot duplicate what we have been complaining about. The check engine light is on now and the air bag light is on yet, they cannot seem to repair these. We have an extended warranty on the car yet, we feel the dealership is being dishonest with us. We also feel that we have been sold a lemon. We have record of each time the car was at the dealership and they have a journal of all visits in their database. We have kept the car well maintained and at 49k miles it should not be having these issues.

While my wife was driving her car to work the check engine light came on and then the engine just seized up on her leaving her in the middle of a two lane highway. 65 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2004 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 07/09/2005

1st incident on July 9th, 2005. Was driving on interstate i40 approximately 65 mph, all of a sudden the "check engine light" came on and the engine turned off. I managed to pull across three lanes onto the emergency lane! I waited for apprx. 10 minutes before I tried to crank up the car. I parked the car for that day. The next day when I checked the car, the engine light was no longer on! exactly one week later the same thing happen, again on a very busy hwy! I took the car to have the oil changed again and all other fluids checked. The engine light stayed on for that day and the next morning it was off! two days ago it happened again, this time I was not able to pull out of traffic!!!!fortunately we did not get hit by other vehicles. This morning I was standing at a traffic light when the car all of a sudden turned off "again", this time I had a hard time getting it cranked up. One important note, on two of those occasions I had my children with me (8 & 12) we could have gotten seriously injured. Having a vehicle malfunction like this after only 12 months can and will be a serious matter. . . . Chrysler will be in a lot of trouble if anything happens to me (single parent) or my children because they simply will not admit that there is a malfunction with these vehicles! consider this the first official notification from me. After I return from the dealership I will be in touch with my attorney!.

When at dealership, asked them to investigate this as well. Dealer fixed recall problem and stated that there was sludge in engine and that engine would need to be replaced at cost of $6500. I do have documentation stating that this is what they found at dealership. Dealership said car would not last for the next few days and that I should get rid of it or let them fix it. I was driving car to my mechanic two days later and timing chain broke due to pressure on engine caused by sludge.
