2000 Intrepid 2. 7l engine started with frequent oil loss starting at 1. 5l between oil changes and ending at nearly 6l between oil changes. No signs of burning, or leaking, and no oil was found in the coolant. Then a noise could be heard in the engine a, rattling noise, engine quit before noise could be diagnosed. A few weeks later it was discovered that the cam sensor was out, replaced it car run. The noise persisted and was diagnosed as the crank bearing was shot. The engine failed critically shortly after. 1998 concord, purchased to replace Intrepid, engine already failed and was replaced with a new engine from Chrysler by the time I bought it the new engine had roughly 85 000 km on it. This concord has a complete service history through our local mechanic since day of purchase in 1998. The previous owner kept up to date on all oil changes up and until I received the vehicle. I have been driving the vehicle for about 1 or 2 months and recently had its oil changed at the 6000km mark. Only a day or 2 ago the car on start up has been making a rattle noise for about 2 sec then stops. That means I have between 2 cars seen 2 2. 7l catastrophic failures and am probably going to see a third. One I could admit to maybe being my fault in some way, 2 is defiantly stretching it, 3. . . . There is a problem and its not the fault of the consumer, something needs to be done. Chrysler needs to resolve this issue for all impacted customers.

I was driving on lagrange rd at 30mph speed suddenly with no warning the engine shut off try to restart the car with no luck. I towed the car to the( park plaza Dodge dealer at 7911 w roosevel rd. ,forest part, IL 60130 tel. 708 366 1001)after he diagnosed the car stated in his report that (needs timing chain and water pump 1270. 00,oil pan gasket leaking 365. 00 oil and coolant mixed may have more damage internally). It is too expansive to be fixed I shopped with other mechanics they seems that they are very aware of the problem to the limit that they told me all about the problem soon I gave them the car information(Dodge Intrepid 2. 7l24v_dohc_alum_black. They said all cars in this category has have the same problem (manufacturer defect that what they call it) the more I investigated the more I found people have the car with the same problem (and I also heard that in order to fix the car you need either to change the whole engine or to rebuild it and each one cost around four thousand which by the way cheaper to buy another car than to fix it. I sent an email to the dealer and he sent me back another email apologize that there is no recall on such problem yet but there is a different kind of recalls on this kind of cars. I was not satisfied by his reply because I felt cheated and I must do something about it.

We have had so many problems with our Dodge Intrepid leading up to the failure of the engine. First, the engine starting stalling, we would have to restart the car and it wouldn't shift from one gear to another. Then there was a leak in the coolant pipe so we had to replace that. My boyfriend then drove the car for few hours straight to go visit his family. He couldn't get the car started to come home. Finally he got it started and started driving home. It died on the way home and hasn't been running since. We have been without a car because it costs so much to get it repaired and we can't sell it because we would hardly get anything for it.
- the contact stated that his 2004 Dodge Intrepid engine had failed. The odometer reading was 80,000 miles. While driving on 01/11/06 at 65 mph on a clear day he could see steam coming from under the hood of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed the nearest service station. The contact stated that a part had failed and was melted, so they replaced it, (he not sure which part). The contact stated that after this part was replaced the mechanic informed the contact that coolant was leaking into the engine and that the engine's head was warped. The contact stated that the vehicle is still at the mechanic shop waiting for a new engine. The contact was informed that his engine had seized. Updated 03/02/07.

Dodge Intrepid 1998 to latest model year. Engine 2. 7l
problem engine failure due to sludge. There is a design flaw in this engine caused by the water pump. The weep (vent) hole is located between the heads in the "v" valley of the engine block. The weep hole is to alert the owner or mechanic of a early sign that the water pump is about to fail. The problem is that the weep hole is located in the engine valley and cannot be seen. Any engine coolant that drains in the valley evaporates due to engine heat and time. As time goes on the front and last seal in the pump fails and coolant leaks into the engine oil causing sludge and engine failure. The weep hole should have been routed to the front of the engine so the owner mechanic can see a coolant leak. A water pump should never be in a location where it's failure could cause coolant to mix into the engine oil, this is the design flaw! this is why I feel that these engine fail with mileage of little as 30,000 miles. Water pumps can fail at any time with little or no warning. In this case with the 2. 7l engine there is no warning what so ever. The car I have, I purchased with a failed engine and will repair the 2. 7l engine and alter the weep hole with a small copper pipe and route it so it can be seen if coolant leaks. I have photo's of the weep hole if you need them.

08/19/2006 - 9:30 a. M. , car ran perfect. At 9:45, car began to "putt" with slight hesitation while pressing on gas. At 9:50, car began to "loose life" as I drove up street. Pressed on gas, but no acceleration. Car stopped. Towed home same day, then towed to nashville Dodge, TN on 09/11/2006. On 09/13/2006 service department stated water pump leak into oil pan, coolant covered floor, engine skipped time. Milky color in valve train as a result. Need new water pump & need new engine.
: the contact stated while driving 6 0mph the vehicle temporally stalled. The vehicle was driven to an independent repair shop were the transmission computer chip was replaced. The intermittent stalling continued while driving 35 mph and the vehicle was towed to another independent repair shop. The mechanic determined there was sludge build up in the engine and the engine needed to be replaced. There was a coolant leak which had contaminated the oil. Updated 04/17/06.
Engine light comes on during a road trip with my daughter to woodfield,OH from columbus. Mechanic says I'm lucky the engine didn't blew up before I got there. Mechanic says there was only a pint of oil in my car yet I saw no signs of oil burning or leaking and an oil change had been done earlier in the year. Mechanic puts new oil in, scans and resets the car so the engine light doesn't stay on. After that, I started my trip back home and everything seems fine, then 10-15 minutes in the trip the engine light comes back on so I turn around and head back to the mechanic. On the way back I could feel the engine kicks back and almost stall out. Again, I was lucky to make it back to the mechanic. While car is parked and engine is running, you could hear the engine revving up and then it would idle back down. It would do this a few times and then stall out. Mechanic does another evaluation and determines that a new engine is needed and the car cannot be driven. A week later I got my car towed back to columbus (the car broke down in woodsfield, OH) and had it checked again by a mechanic in columbus. They told me the same thing that the engine needs replaced because the water pump housing is damaged and there is no coolant in the overflow and felt that I could not have prevented this. So I called around to get estimates on replacing the engine and every place I called, they said that they've had lots of complaints about the Dodge Intrepid's 2. 7 liter engine. They say that the oil is not getting to the top of the engine. One place told me they replaced this engine almost once a week. So now I'm stuck with having to come up with several thousand dollars to replace a faulty engine. The fact that the safety of my daughter and I was jeopardized because this is becoming a common problem, and that there isn't even an investigation going on, leaves me very upset. I hope something will be done about this soon.
The problem with the coolant system is related to the water pump, specifically the o ring seal. My vehicle has overheated on 5 different occasions. Each time, I pulled to the side of the road as soon as I noticed the temp needle in the red or the idiot light illuminating. Once cooled down, I refilled the coolant resevoir and went along my way. Each time, I verified operation of the thermostat and the condition of the hoses. It's finally been narrowed to a bad o ring seal. I am very concerned about latent heat damage internal to the engine. The window seal problem is very irritating. The wind noise at speeds above 50 mph is obnoxious. I've had it checked, but nothing was ever done under the warranty (to my knowledge). The window lock problem was due to a dislocated spring lock. I repaired it myself by repositioning the spring and reinstalling the assembly. Finally, the weather seal problem is worrisome to say the least. There is a musty smell indiciative of a water leak within the vehicle. I have not found it yet and I am very concerned about mold/mildew/rust damage to the entry and pooling sites. Please advise me as to any recalls/service bulletins that apply to these problems. Thanks.
