Initially my 2000 Dodge Intrepid began making a clanking noise under the hood as I was driving about 30mph. I have always maintained regular oil changes of 3000 miles or less, but when I checked the oil, it was about a quart low (which it had not ever been low before. ) when I opened the crankcase to add oil, the cap was full of sludge. I took the car in to have the engine flushed with oil, replaced the oil and filter, and also had lucas added to the engine. The noise continued. I then took the car to my mechanic. It was determined that the timing belt tensioner had to be replaced. All parts were ordered directly from Chrysler. Less than 125 miles later, the noise began again. I took the car back to my mechanic. He contacted Chrysler, then, per Chrysler, added two separate additives to the crankcase. This was supposed to make the tensioner work properly. However, the noise continued to get worse in the few days that followed. (I was told to drive the car to see if these additives would work. ) the engine stopped without warning. I had the car towed to my mechanic. He eventually was able to determine that the engine failed due to low oil pressure. After notifying Chrysler, I had to have the car towed to the local dealership for a diagnostics. The dealership said that the rod bearings were bad and the engine has to be replaced. The dealership says it will be $5400 for a new engine. I do not have the money to get this fixed. I have already spent $1300 on the engine plus the cost of two tows. I still owe on this car and cannot use it. The car only has 39k miles on this original engine. I will never drive, rent, or own another Dodge or Chrysler vehicle again because I truly believe that Chrysler knows that they have a serious problem with these engines and have no integrity to make it right.

With no warning my car cut off in middle of road. Was able to start it and get to parking lot but it was sputtering. Dealer replaced the cam shaft position censor ($400) now my oil light comes on while at an idle even though there is plenty of oil. I have been told it is probably the oil pressure sending unit but not sure yet.

Dec 1, 2006 - mileage: under 78k - problem: it was time for routine tune up on my car, once I popped the hood I went directly for the oil tank/engine first thing. Pcv valve needed replacing, upon taking said valve off I noticed a lot of heavy gunk or "sludge" if you will. Put on brand new pcv valve kit bought from mopar and continued on with the rest of the tune-up. Thinking back to all the sludge I found on the old pcv valve I began to really wonder as this amount of sludge was not normal for a car that's kept up with exactly how the owners manual dictates. Upon research I found that "oil sludge" is the number one problem with the Dodge Intrepid 2. 7l engine and possible signs and symptoms of said problem included: "heavy amounts of sludge found on pcv valves, slightly noticeable grey/blue smoke from exhaust and over all diminishing performance" all of which my car has/is showing signs of. From all that I've read and all "signs to look out for" I would have to say this engine is more then likely ready to blow if not this year then early next year. From the same amounts of complaints I've seen on this engine I really feel this should be chryslers responsibility to recall this engine as it does pose a very serious, highly dangerous threat as the motor will stop at any given moment with no warning and no immediate noticeable cause. It's not fair once this faulty engine dies that the consumer gets slapped with the repair bill!.

Engine blew up after 70,000 due to engine sludge build up. Had the engine rebuilt costing me thousands and it happened again within 10,000 miles. Cost me thousands again.

2000 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 liter engine failed twice (two engines) due to lack of oil even though there was oil in the crankcase. A Dodge service manager told me their is a design problem were sludge can restrict the oil flow back to the crankcase. Both occurrences were at 85 mph.
Flapping noise in engine, then without warning, the Intrepid shut down and would not restart. This was the first car I ever bought and I bought it used. Obviously, I have no warranty on it. The car broke down yesterday. My mechanic said it's the timing chain and he's checking to see if there's any valve damage. If so, he said it would be cheaper to replace the whole engine rather than repair it. My wife and I work two different schedules and need our second vehicle. I can't afford the repair.
White smoke was emanating from the engine motor upon take off. Dealership indicated that the valve cover gasket and seals needed to be replaced because they were leaking. Vehicle was taken to another dealership to get a second opinion. They indicated that it was the pcv valve, and this was a common failure with these model vehicles.
(1) December 02, 2003. Check engine light came on and car was taken to dealership for repair. Dealer specified that the the cam sensor and ignition coil needed replacing and oil was being sent throught the pcv valve hose into the air box and throttle body. Their repairs repairs included "cleaning out the oil", however no mention of known quality issues in the 2. 7l engine, that would eventually result in engine failure. (2) August 11, 2004. While driving down interstate 75 in the detroit metro area, the check engine light came on and the engine died. I managed to navigate the car through interstate traffic and onto the shoulder without the engine and any power steering. (3) the car is currently non-functional and estimates for repairs have exceeded $7000. Upon further investigation, I have discovered that the 2000 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7l engine has known quality issues that result in engine failure.
Dear sir: my Dodge Intrepid engine seized up on me while driving on 5/27/04 in the middle of a busy road and someone almost hit me as my car stopped sudennly, plus cars started to pass me on a one lane road which was a dangerous situation. I took the car to my mechanic, who diagnosed a blown engine with sludge but it had a full oil pan. He said the car had full oil but the engine was not getting oil so it blew so it is a defective product. It is a dangerous product as well. I bought this car about a year ago thinking it had a life of about 10 more years and it was in great condition. I maintained the car as recommended per the owners manual and had it in for service including oil changes every 3000 miles or 3 months. I took care of this car but Dodge did not take care of me by selling a car with a defective engine. I will do whatever I can to punish Dodge for what they did to me and to recoup my losses. I would appreciate any help you could offer me. Thanks, keith barnes.
Engine failure at est. 79,000 miles. Transmission died at 76,847 miles. Tensioner arm pulley sheared off while driving----October, 2002.

On February 2, 2004 car began to make a clacking noise - sounded like oil was not getting into the crankcase. Had car towed to a mechanic the next day. Timing chain broke when mechanic started the car to diagnose. Diagnosed as engine sludge problem - mechanic said that he has seen this problem on this type of engine at much lower mileages. Need to replace the engine - approximately $5000.
While driving 50 mph vehicle stalled without warning. The dealer stated there was sludge in the crankcase.
Car blew the engine on December 13th. Was told back in June I had major engine problem due to oil sludge in the engine. When I produced all my oil changes I was told I should have bought the extended warranty. Chrysler offered 50/50 which still has cost me $3600+ to replace my engine. I had taken my car in when it was under warranty for "ticking noises under the hoods". They recentered the transmission and motor mounts, replaced the idler pulley, but it still existed. They claim I could not have driven my car for 3 years with this problem. The #6 bering finally blew out. Very upsetting. I was driving the car when it happened.
