The car was a fleet vehicle with documented services completed. I bought the car in may 2003 with approximately 60000 miles on it. Continued with regular oil changes around 3000 miles. When the car reached around 100000 miles the oil light started flicking at low rpms. Even though I had just changed the oil around 1000 miles before. I just figured that the car was burning some oil since it had over 100000 mile on it so I just kept a quart in the trunk and checked the oil level when the light would start flickering and add some oil if it was low. Then coming home from work one evening the car just lost power and the engine light came on. Since the car was still running and I was in traffic I tried to get it to a parking lot when it died at a red light. Got it started and to a parking lot and that was where it expired.
I purchased a 2002 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 liter engine from Honda cars of mckinney in may of 2005 for $7000 and felt very happy about my purchase until a about a year and half later, the engine begin leaking oil. I followed the normal maintenance schedule and had the oil changed every 3000 miles. I took my Dodge to allen samuels of fort worth, texas and they "fixed" my oil leak problem for $893 but was never told about the 2. 7 engine design problems which cause major oil sludge problems. After about 2 months, the engine light came on again. I took the vehicle back to the dealership and they ran another check and found that there was no oil leak (engine burns oil now) but there was a "small" transmission leak. I was unable to get any further with the dealership without paying more money? since then, I've been unable to get my car inspected and have received a number of citations for expired inspection. I was even told by a policeman that I could check with the air texas program for repair cost help. I sent in required documents and found out from christian brothers automotive that it would cost more the car is worth to fix. The state of texas has given me a $3000 voucher to replace this pos Dodge. The problem now is that I'm unemployed and can't afford a car that qualifies for this benefit. I am in the process of sending a complaint to robert nardelli with Chrysler but I saw this link and thought I would get the word out. The dealership and/or Chrysler owe me the cost of the "oil leak" repair, cost to either replace engine/trans and the expenses to try and get it inspected.

: the contact stated the engine stalled suddenly while stopped at a traffic light. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop who determined that the engine needed to be replaced due to water and oil in the engine. There were no problems with the vehicle prior to the incident. The oil light illuminated on the dash. Due to oil consumption problem, oil was not reaching the heads of the vehicle which caused which caused coolant to mix with the oil. Updated 08/24/06.

Bought 3 years ago used, it had emissions issues with the original engine. At about 74,000 miles the engine block cracked. Engine design does not allow for it to cool itself properly while running and results in the oil burning within before the engine can circulate it which finally results in the "sludge" that so many owners have a problem with and only perseverant the high heat issue as less oil is circulated to cool the engine. My engine's block cracked providing evidence of the engine getting too hot with no gauge warning of overheating because it is "overheating" within the system before it gets to the sensor etc, therefore it is not a poor maintenance issue but poor design and manufacturing. With a "rebuilt" engine it shakes, hesitates and emits smoke with clean oil and filter and no evidence of sludge within!! now at under 96000 original miles and 22000 rebuilt engine the a/c coil has busted under the high pressure caused by the high engine temperature. The a/c pressure varies with engine pressure which varies with engine heat (still no overheating warning on the gauges). It is only addressed now that it is summer and too hot to drive without a/c. Unfortunately because of the design it will cost around $850 to replace a $80-120 part because the entire dash/firewall must come out along with many other components to get to it (and then those reinstalled afterward). The battery was sucked of power around this time and the motors controlling the windows & mirrors have broken. The keyless entry system has gone as well.
Engine has been burning oil at the rate of 1 quart every three weeks. While driving, total engine failure occurred unexpectedly, making it very difficult to control the vehicle.
: the contact stated while the vehicle was still under warranty stalling occurred causing problems to the brakes and the steering. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer who determined the tire rod ends were shot and vehicle was not drivable. Repairs were made to the censor of the vehicle to repair the problems on the steering and the brakes. The vehicle soon also had problems with overheating causing the engine to smoke and an oil burning smell to occur. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they determined the cause for overheating was due to sludge in the motor and that the cost for repairs were not covered under warranty.

Shortly after my 2001 Dodge Intrepid reached 70,000, I began to notice that it seemed to be burning oil. I had not noticed any problem with the vehicle previously. I later found out that this was just the beginning of the engine failure process that I would experience. I have cared for the car regularly including oil changes, but also found that this would have made no difference in the outcome. After having the oil changed on 9/18/05, the car began to make extensive engine failure noise. I took the car to the john elway Chrysler Plymouth dealership in golden, CO, and was told that this was a known issue by Chrysler corporation, but that I had no recourse in having the failed engine replaced. The service advisor admitted that there was nothing that I could have done differently, because Chrysler admitted to the 2. 7l v6 engine in the Intrepid having a serious lubrication problem, but they would not assist in the repaid of the engine in any way.
When changing motor oil burned oil stayed inside the motor. When taken vehicle to dealer for inspection the cause could not be determined.

The consumer experienced problems with the engine. The engine has been burning oil excessively for the past 20,000 miles. The oil light stayed on and eventually the engine will seize. Provide further details.
Consumer stated vehicle burned oil excessively.
Vehicle was burning and leaking oil out the engine, causing the vehicle to have no steering or brakes. Then, it stalled. Dealer will repair vehicle at consumer's expense.
We regularly serviced our car and did not have any problems leading up to our engine failure. After leaving work one evening, I started my car up and it sounded like a muffled motorcycle in the engine. We had just checked the oil level five days prior to the engine going out and the level was fine, but upon checking it that night it read that there was no oil in the car. We took took it to our shop; they recommended that we take it to the dealer. The mechanic at the dealership told us that there was major sludge build up and the oil must be burning internally. Our indicator lights, which work, never even came on to alert us to a problem with the oil or engine, and we never experienced any oil leaking. After them taking it apart to find the problem and putting it back together they said that the timing was off and they could not guarantee how long the car would drive. It cost us $600 and we had to have it towed home because the car would no longer run. It would have cost us another $250 for them to put it back together with not even a day guarantee of running. We opted for the $75 tow. . They told us at the dealership that a used engine would run about $3000/new $6000 or we could trade our car in, which we still owe $9000 on, and they would give us $300 on the trade-in. They said that they could get us a "new" Dodge Intrepid that has the "new" engines in them. The mechanic stated that not only did he have the same car with the same problem (which he got rid of) but that there were two other Intrepids there for servicing with the exact same problem. Obviously, there is problem with these cars. We are now left with trying to buy a used engine or buy a used car. Either way we are left with a hefty note to pay and a car that looks nice but doesn't run.
I purchased my Dodge Intrepid January 2001, I had a little problem, I thought with the transmission slipping, but that problem stop immediately. I did worry about it then I noticed-- I was low on oil from time to time between oil changes. I had it checked when I changed my oil, but they couldn't tell where it was burning from. Then the worst happened Nov 25, 2003 the car start burning oil and smoking like crazy, still could not figure it out, now I do believe that my motor is gone. I can not afford to pay a car note and pay repair bills or replace a motor at the cost of $2000-6000 and still owe a $10,0000 balance on the car. I have made two complaints on other sites and hope that this will help all of us through this ordeal. I need transportation and as of right now I don't have the money to pay down on another car. I will have to find something in reason for the same cost of the repair.
Abnormal premature consumption of oil. First noticed around 40,000 miles and has steadily progressed to current 1 quart per 1,500 mile of oil consumption at 68,000 miles. Chrysler refused to correct the problem and indicates that it is normal for their engines to burn oil.
1999 Dodge Intrepid VIN#2b3hd46r5xh678464 the engine is not good my car was burning oil. I warranty company denied the claimant and jay wolfe Dodge advise that it would be $7,000 to $8,000. 00 to replace the motor. I can't afford that when I owed $10,000 on the car. The oil was clotting up in bottom of the oil pan. I have receipts where I have always change my oil. I believe its a problem with Dodge motor being bad. I'm out of car and making a car payment and just having a hard time making it because of this car. My payment month is $413. 00 that alot of money. Dodge need to make it right. I will not never buy a Dodge vehicle again.
Purchased vehicle with 28,000 miles. Oil and filter change performed at dealership prior to vehicle purchase according to dealership. Checked oil about 2 months later, dipstick was almost dry. Had oil and oil filter changed. Oil was thought to be leaking from cheap or incorrectly installed oil filter since newer vehicle with low milage shouldn't be burning that much oil. Checked oil ever two weeks several times out of concern. Oil level was fine. Assumed problem was corrected. At 33,000 miles about 1. 5 months later engine began making knocking nose and running very rough. Dealership stated that engine was blown. Had to provide proof of recent oil and filter change for dealership to replace. Dealership stated that engine had only 1 quart of oil and that oil looked really mucky. Engine lost about 5 quarts of oil in 2215 miles. No visual signs of leakage anywhere, no smoke or excessive exaust. Vehicle had been checked and maintained well. Dealership cannot explain and states that they are not allowed to tear down and inspect the engine. Dealership replaced engine at 33000.
Vehicle was using a lot of oil. Vehicle burned 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles. Consumer's vehicle was burning 2 quarts of oil per 1000 miles. Oil light didn't tell when vehicle was low in oil . If engine was out of oil vehicle would sometimes stall. Contacted dealer, and dealer had to tear engine down to find cause.
. Hello. My wife and I own a 1998 Chrysler Intrepid. I say Chrysler instead of Dodge because it is canadian built and they are called chryslers. We had 73,000 miles on it when it suddenly failed on us. My wife was on the freeway heading to work. The oil light came on and she pulled over immediately. Well, the engine stopped before she could even come to a complete stop. We had it towed to a Chrysler dealership. They told us the engine had no oil and it seized up. Well, I know the engine had oil. We just had it changed 2 weeks prior. The car never burned oil. Nor was there ever any leaking evident underneath it. I have receipts to prove many of the oil changes. We had them done every 3 thousand miles. So I called the corporation. I was treated very rudely. The only thing they had to offer was "engine failure due to lack of maintenance. " I was very angry, but I felt I had no other recourse but to just take it and buy a new motor. It cost us well over $2500. 00. Now we can't sell the car because we can't break even on it. It is now worth more to us than to anyone else. My name is ronald w. Ault. 4930 beech rd. Hope, mi 48628. My home number is 989 435-9941. I will help in any way I can because my thoughts on this are: Chrysler will do everything they can to fight a recall on this because it will cost them multi-millions of dollars to settle all the cases. Please contact me if you need any assistance. Ron .
