The contact owns a 1999 Chrysler Intrepid. While driving approximately 40 mph she heard a clicking noise. She parked the vehicle for inspection. Upon inspection she noticed that the timing chain had fractured. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, and he concluded that the timing chain and possibly the engine needed to be replaced. The timing chain was previously replaced. No repairs were made. . The failure mileage was 103,000. The current mileage was 123,000.

Driving on highway when engine suddenly started making ticking noises, then eventually choking and then quit. Couldn't get it started, had it towed to mechanic who said only 2 qts of oil in engine. Oil light never came on, no warning whatsoever. Changed oil and mechanic said there was still a ticking noise that wouldn't go away and engine was probably "toast" and they could do nothing to repair it, replacement would be only option. Car is now sitting because it doesn't run correctly and engine most probably ruined, p1391 code (camshaft or cam) problem. Read about many other 2. 7l engine problems and it was suggested to me to file a complaint with NHTSA because it was "interested" in the problem, haven't called Chrysler because I know of no one who has had success in getting Chrysler to resolve the problem.

I was driving on the I -5 northbound to oceanside, when I started hearing a clacking/clunking noise from the engine. I pulled in towards the nearest gas station and checked the oil levels for the car, which were fine. I drove another 2 miles and started to exit the freeway when a total power loss to the engine occurred. I managed to recover control of the vehicle, and parked it in a parking lot where it was towed to my place of residence. The next day I had it towed to a mechanic and was told that the engine needed to be replaced. I had just replaced the oil 2,000 miles ago, and was perplexed. The oil light had been on intermittently, but oil levels were fine, I was told this was probably due to a failed sensor. I am young and have just started a family, with a newly born infant who could have been involved in an accident. From further research, I have found 1000s of incidents similar to my own concerning the 2. 7 liter engine, and implore Chrysler to recall this engine.

Engine failure. As I was stopped and attempting to accelerate, the motor suddenly made a very loud clanking sound. There are approximately only 72,200 miles on the car. I just bought in November of last year and even a few days after the initial purchase, I had returned it to them informing of them of trouble and the sales mgr assured me he would take care of it. They would return it to me untouched and not investigated unbeknownst to me at that time. According to the service mgr, he was advised by the sales mgr not to even look at it. They had the car in their possession more than I did until recently when this occurred.

Contacted a friend who is retired mechanic. He tried to start engine without success, he said the engine had complete loss of compression. Had vehicle towed to an engine specialist who checked engine thoroughly. He said that due to lack of oil pressure, the cam was not receiving sufficient oil to lubricate the timing chain thus causing it to break and completely ruin the valves and heads in the engine. Cost to repair would either be a complete tear down and machining of the internal parts, $3,400. 00 or putting in a 2002 2. 7 liter Intrepid engine at a cost of $4,500. 00 parts and labor included. Since I still owe $3,300. 00 on this vehicle I could not afford either of these options.

He took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the timing chain failed. Almost two years later, the contact heard a loud pop and pulled to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to a transmission shop and they stated that the vehicle needed a new engine. Currently, the vehicle is unable to be driven. The purchase date was unknown. The current mileage was 73,000 and failure mileage was 45,000.

I was on my way home, after work 6:30pm when my engine star sounding funny (tapping noise) then a loud noise, and the car stop, I'm not a mechanic so all I did was call a toll truck, and bring the car to the shop, the next day I got a call from the shop, they told me that the timing chain was broken and the valves bend, (I need a new engine) I was told that with labor and parts it'll be around $4500. 00 dls. I pull the car out of the shop and bring this to my garage, where is been sitting for the last 2 weeks.

I am the owner of a 2000 Dodge Intrepid (2. 7 model) while on my way to work my car began to make a strange ticking noise that grew louder I stop at a four way intersection to find out where the noise was coming from and that is when my car cut off and would not start back up and had to be towed to the dealership where the service manager after checking told me that my car slung a rod so to speak and would need a new engine an that a replacement would cost 4900 I am highly upset because I am still making payments on what I thought would be a decent american made car instead I am stuck with a piece of junk that still has not been fixed I will never buy another Dodge or Chrysler again.

The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. Purchased vehicle with 50, 000 miles on it. The next day drove car and felt vibration in front end. Thought it may be tires. Consumer had the tires balanced and that did not fix the problem. Then, the oil light came on. The pressure gauge came on during idling. Took vehicle back to dealership and they replaced the oil pressure gauge. But, problem still not fixed. The transmission acted funny , when applying brakes vehicle would not slow down , it was like it was still in gear . The steering made noises when turning it to the right or left, a clanking noise . The rear suspension clanked every time hitting a bump. The engine had a high pitched wining. This happened as soon as vehicle was purchased.

I was coming off of the freeway, stopped at a red light, my oil light came on, and in a blink of an eye the engine died. It would not restart. I had someone look at it and it had no oil, so I filled it, tried starting it, after several attempts it started, it makes a clank clank noise, and is undriveable. I have my oil changed regularly.

Please contact your state attorney generals office for possible class action lawsuit to recall this defective motor. Daimler-Chrysler should be held liable for ever manufacturing these engines. Have contacted Chrysler in reference to problem and admitted they had other complaints about this. It is currently under investigation.

I have a 99 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7l engine. The car has @ 79,000 miles. The engine started making a loud clanging noise while I was driving it. After getting a tune-up and coming back from a trip, without warning , the car started making clicking noises. The driver pulled over, and it had to be towed. Caller found out that the engine was a discontinued motor because it was a defective motor . Dealer said the motor was not worth replacing, and she had not called manufacturer yet. Caller had reason to believe there was consumer actions on this motor.

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that I bought in October of 2003, in September of 2004 the engine light came on and wouldn't go off. After spending $900. 00 and 2 towing bills the Dodge dealer finally got the light to stay off by replacing the cam and crank sensors. Approx 6 1/2 months later in April of 2005 while driving at 20 miles per hour the engine started making a loud clicking noise. I took it to my regular mechanic that told me a rod had blown in the engine. He told me it would probably run me around $5000. 00 to repair. He also said he's heard about alot of problems with these engines. I think Dodge should be doing something about this especially after I see by your complaint list I'm not the only one. I still owe almost as much as they say it will cost me to repair it.

I had a 99 Dodge Intrepid. My car was having problems with the oil and we believed there to be a leak because it would never hold oil very long before the tank would be bone dry. But even after taking it to a mechanic we could not find a leak. In March was driving back into town when my car broke down. It started making a really loud clunking noise like the engine was about to fall out. After having it towed home a mechanic looked at it and said that the engine had gone out and I needed a new one. I ended up having to file bankruptcy due to the fact that the car was only worth $3000 or so and it would have cost more than that to fix it and that I was already $4000 upside down. However, I am about to be sued by the credit union that I had the loan for my car on due to them losing so much money on it.

On Dec. 26 2004, as we were leaving our house the car starting making a ticking sound, we pulled back into the driveway and checked the oil, transmission fluid and hoses. No lights were on to indicate a promblem but we parked the car since it was a noise we had never heard. The next morning, Monday, we called our mechanics and had the car towed in, the mechanic asked about the oil changes and I told him to check the date on the window I knew it was recent. He stated he was shocked due to the sludge build up in the engine. I infromed him I have regular oil changes and have the receipts. He suggested to clean adn replace the oil pan and filter totaling $800. 00, he did the work. Thursday Dec 30 I got the car back but did not drive it due to the holiday weekend. Monday morning on a 2 lane road 37 miles from home the car would not accelerate the all the sudden the car started to rapidly decrease speed and then shut off. I was able to barely get the car off the road before being hit by an oncoming 18 wheeler. I had the car towed back in and was told that due to the oil sludge I needed a new engine. The promblem is they refused to "get involved" due to the numerous complaints and class action law suits regarding the 2. 7 engines. I contacted my local Dodge dealer and was told "I sympathize and have heard of this before but the best I can do is $7800-8200. 00 for a new engine but can not warranty sludge build up. I only owed $6000on the car. After contacting 2 more dealers and being told they could not warranty it against the same thing happening again they did not want to do the work. This engine is a sludge engine and almost cost me mylife as well as my 2 kids that were in the car! something needs to be done!.

Comer was driving 50 mph and heard a clicking sound, and the motor stalled, vehicle lost power steering, and all the lights in the dashboard just lit up. Consumer called a tow truck and had the vehicle taken to a service center. Mechanic indicated that the engine locked up. There was plenty of oil in the engine. Consumer was told that the engine needed to be replaced. The service engine soon (ses) light did not illuminate to warn there was a problem with the engine.
