49 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 07/12/2007

We purchased a 2001 Dodge Intrepid for our son on may 21,2007 from a reputable gossett dealership in memphis TN. We understood that they had no liability for the vehicle after purchase. The 2. 7l v6 engine failed due to oil sludge on 07/12/2007. There was no warning! the vehicle had been serviced the day of purchase and no lights or sensors indicated that there was a problem of any kind. We were driving down the street when the car stalled a couple of times then stopped suddenly. The engine oil lights flashed only at the time that the vehicle quit. We had the vehicle towed to the garage. The mechanic told us that the engine was gone and that the oil was like sludge. Estimated cost of repairs for a jasper engine $5926. 04 and for a used 2. 7l engine $3992. 30. I called a relative who works for the us consumer product safety commission. We both work for the federal government and through contacts at ucpsc and NHTSA discovered information regarding defects with this particular engine and problems that consumers were having with getting issues resolved. There are even forums dedicated to engine failures for 1999 - 2001 Dodge Intrepids with the 2. 7l engine. From my understanding even if the engine is replaced with another 2. 7l we will be dealing with this same issue of engine failure as the product is faulty. It is also our understanding that the jasper engine is supposed to be the corrected version of the 2. 7l engine for this vehicle type. I was advised to file a complaint about the engine on this website and the center for auto safety. I am very bothered by this situation and the duplicitous nature of Chrysler placing an inferior product on the market without providing recourse such as a recall or advisement/warning. Given horror stories that I have read on the web, I feel fortunate but have lost confidence for the Chrysler product line. This is a safety issue. I also understand that a class action lawsuit is being pursued or initiated in this matter.

57 Engine Failure problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 05/05/2007

Complained about Dodge Intrepid 2000 2. 7 engine. Problem began with lifter noise and oil light came on. Imediately stopped and shut engine down. Checked oil level which was okay. Restarted engine and drove 2 miles when problem recurred. Discussed with mechanic. Problem was sludge buildup in oil and blocking of oil line. Sludge apparently drained when engine shut off. Lifter noise and oil warning light stayed off until sludge again blocked oil screen and line. Regular changing of oil seemed not to be an answer. The mechanic stated she is aware of numerous engine failures. Also numerous complaints on the internet of engine failure because of sludge buildup in the 2. 7 Dodge engine.

58 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 04/28/2007

While driving my Dodge Intrepid, the engine failed and seized on me. The last regular oil change I did, I happened to notice that the oil was a little chunky. After that oil change, the oil light started to flicker while car was in idol. Asked mechanic friend to come look at my car, and said that there was nothing wrong. Later that week my car started to knock very loudly. Fear of a breakdown, I parked my Intrepid and attempted to fix. When I took the valve cover off there was a thick coating of sludge on everything. I replaced a bearing on the crank for the #1 piston rod. When I started the car, it ran fine. I drove it for approximately 20 miles and the engine seized while I was on a busy 2 lane highway. Now I need an engine replacement. When a called a shop and described the situation, he told me that this was a problem for a lot of people and that he did not have the time to fix my car that will just breakdown over and over. Plus, I have problems with the window switches, and a/c controls. Both problems I tried to have a dealership fix and they wouldn't cover it with my warranty!.

Failure Date: 03/10/2007

I purchased a 01' Intrepid r/t in October of 2006. The engine failed in March for no explained reason while I was driving at 40 mph. I found a receipt in the car stating that the engine was replaced at 89,000 miles by another used 3. 5l v6 but did not specify the mileage on that car. I purchased the car with 95,000 miles on it, and drove it normally until at about 99,000 miles, the engine failed. I will replacing it with another used engine with 48,000 miles, making this the third engine in this car under 100,000 miles. I took it to the Dodge dealer to diagnose it, and they stated that they could not tell me the problem unless they tore the engine apart and recommended replacing the engine.

I had to replace the engine on my 1999 Dodge engine in 2007. The engine failed and the dealer who replaced the engine said it was due to oil sludge. I subsequently found out that the problem is due to a design problem with the car. And the 2. 7 liter engine.

69 Engine Failure problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 02/08/2007

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7 engine. I bought the car brand new and have been the primary driver ever since. I have maintained the vehicle and there are only 60,000 miles on it. The car had been driving fine, til one day all of a sudden it started to make a terrible tapping sound from the engine. I managed to get home and after having a mechanic inspect it, he said the engine need to be rebuilt that the timing chain guide let go and that all the guides, gaskets, timing chain, gears, and crankshaft would need to be replaced. I can't believe that a new engine or a rebuilt one would need to be done on a car of this age and such low mileage. I've had a concern with the oil light coming on periodically, but everytime we've had it checked, the oil was full and no problem found, thought to be an electrical concern. Now, I find out after some research that this year vehicle had a defective engine that caused sludge to build up and cause this light to go on and cause engine failure. Shame on Chrysler for making this engine. I think someone at Chrysler should contact me and assist with this repair. I have been buying Chrysler for the last 12 years. My husband and I had a neon, Jeep cherokee, and currently a grand minivan. My father in law is a proud retired Chrysler automaker. If Chrysler knows there were problems with these engines, then I should be given some consideration. I have always intended to buy Chrysler products, but after this, I don't know if I will ever buy one again, and I will tell everyone I know of this defective product.

70 Engine Failure problem of the 2004 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 01/28/2007

2004 Dodge Intrepid with Mitsubishi 2. 7l engine on January 28, 2007 my teenage daughter was driving referenced car when without any warning engine failed causing steering to fail, and my daughter was forced to allow the car to coast into a safety zone. Although automobile had recently been serviced and had the bushings replaced, there was no indication either to me or the mechanic that the engine was in immediate danger of failure. The car has less than 45,000 miles on it. I see from several websites that the engine in my Intrepid is defective and many, many engines both in the u. S. And canada have the same problem. However, I an told now that regardless of maintenance of the vehicle, any warranties, the early failure of the engine, I have no recourse but to replace the engine at a cost of around $3500. But, there is a problem. So many of these engines have had to be replaced that I cannot get an engine, even if I could pay for it. So, I continue to make car payments for a defective vehicle that I cannot drive and cannot repair because there are no engines. Help, please help.
