The car has major engine problems like all the 03 2. 7 l eng se. Connecting rods is falling out, and etc. The car is unbalance. I took the car today to find why the oli light was coming on when the vehicle thermostat rises. Turn out the engine isn't allowing the oil to reach the upper part of the engine and that is causing my vehicle to overheat and make noises on startup. And also when you reverse you hearthe car make a bad knock sound and feel the vibration. This car only has 86000 miles and the mechanics could only shake their heads. This car should be in better condition then this. Anyways, the cost for new engine with warranty is over $6000. And that includes everything! now who has that type of money and why didn't Dodge recall this problem on the 03 Dodge Intrepid??? all I want is the engine replace and Dodge could do that at any of their companies or auto lots. I'm a simple person. I just want to work and be at peace.

I have the same old Dodge 2. 7l engine complaint. My 2000 Dodge Intrepid with only 90k miles started making noise, than boom. . . The end of another 2. 7l motor. Found it was combo of sludge and timing chain. Our local junk yards won't even take the car because they have to many as it is!!! so I get to stare at my expensive lawn ornament from my door every day.
The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 55 mph, the engine began making noise and the vehicle shut off in the middle of the road. The weather was not a factor. The contact took the vehicle to be repaired and the dealer stated that they had to wait on an inspector to investigate the failure. Three weeks later, the inspector stated that there was sludge build up and the oil filter looked rusty. The vehicle is still at the dealer to be repaired. The failure mileage was 78,900.

I was 4 miles away from school and noticed that I had steering problems. As I was forcing the wheel to corporate a truck was to my right and I could not control the car as the car jerked to the right. Causing me to hit the trunk from my front right to the passenger tire. Now my engine is having several problems that deal with one of the cylinders not responding after the incident. The car shakes violently if idled for seconds and moving sometimes. When this happened, my steering still didn't work so could not move the car without help and my car blocked several cars. I have spent over $1400 in keeping the engine from collapsing to the ground after the incident, a part that keeps the car from flipping over when turning. I still continue to have problems with the steering wheel.

I was simply driving down the road and my car made a noise like air was being released (something being depressurized) and then my car would not accelerate. I had to turn into a parking lot and coast to a spot where I stopped. I opened the hood and my engine had a hole and a huge crack throughout the top of the valve cover. My car has less than 75,000 on the engine and has always had the oil changed at least every 3000 miles. I also noticed some sludge material on the inside of my oil cap when I was looking around. I can see into my engine through the hole. Repair man said repairs could be in excess of $6k. Car is still at garage as I ponder my choices, since I still owe over $3k on it.

The car was making a sound. Had just previously had an oil change. Got ready to get in the car to take to shop to find out what the noise was & the car would not start. Had to have the car towed to shop. That's when I was told the engine was gone. 5-6 thousand dollars to repair. Cannot afford that when still paying car note.
Pinging noise from engine, by the time I got home the timing chain broke the cover. Car towed to Dodge dealer where they indicated it needs a new engine. $7-8000. I noticed a fair amount of sludge in the engine and found similar complaints for the 2. 7 engine in the Intrepid.
While driving home from work, car started to make noises under hood and smoking. Replaced motor. 2 years later and we are having the same problem.
I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7l engine. I was driving down the highway when the oil pressure symbol popped on . The engine started to make a knocking and pinging sound that got worse as I went down the road. The motor finally stop running so I pulled on side the road. I tried to restart it but it would not turn over. I had to have it pulled to the house . I had made it a habit to change the oil every 3,000 miles and to make sure the oil level was full every time I left the house. I don't know of anything that I did or didn't do that would have cause the motor to seize up. I do know that there are a lot of complains about the 2. 7l engine and that it is not a very dependable motor that will quit and seize up for no reason t all. I believe that this motor should be recalled and that the consumers should be compensated with a new or rebuilt 3. 2l or 3. 5l engine to replace the 2. 7l engines in these vehicles.
Engine made noise. Took to dealer who stated the car needed a new engine. The car has 85,000 mile, used by experienced drivers. Serviced fairly regularly approximately every 4000 to 5000 miles. Dealer says car has lot of sludge. We fail to understand why a serviced car should have lot of sludge. Was the service done properly? is the Intrepid designed badly?.
Aug 21 engine began making noise, I took it to dealer on Aug 22, told engine was sludge up need to be rebuilt.
While driving on freeway the consumer heard noise coming from the engine. The consumer pulled off at a gas station, parked the vehicle, and revved the engine ,and the sound returned. The engine noise was worse today than it was yesterday. The consumer took the vehicle to a mechanic, and he advised the consumer this was a known problem with the 2. 7 l engine, and that Chrysler was aware of the problem. The only thing the mechanic could do was replace the engine.
I attempted to start my vehicle and it would not start. I noticed a strange noise. I had the vehicle towed to a repair shop. The mechanic told me that the timing chain had broken and ruined the engine.
To whom it may concern, I was around 700 miles from home for my son's wedding in may and the engine started to knock, my husband who is a certified auto mechanic by the state of ohio for over 25 years looked it over and found nothing. The next day we were driving back home and the knocking stopped . The car drove fine after that and did not make the noise again. We always had the oil changed every 3000 miles and we have always used synthetic oil in the car. 1 month later on my way to work I was driving on state route 571 when the car started jerking and stopping then starting again I almost got rearended by a semi truck before I could get the car off the road. I called my husband to tell him what had happened I was very shook up scared out of my mind I thought I was going to be ran over by a semi. He told me to drive on the side of the road until I could turn off on a side road so I did. I was able to nurse it home and take another car to work that day. We took it down to the Chrysler dealer in town and they told us there was sludge in the oil and told us it would be 7200 dollars to fix the car I don't have that kind of money laying around so the car is sitting in my driveway while I try to come up with the money to fix it.
Consumer states: the engine cradle mount on the right side is rusted in the back, and the engine mount on the left is starting to rust in the back. Was making noise, got louder and louder, and couldn't see anything.

Engine was replaced because of a sludge build up. Vehicle was making a noise. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and the engine had a sludge build up.
The 2. 7l engine was making a pinging noise while driving at any speed. Consumer did some research on the website and believed the problem was due to engine sludge build up. Dealer was notified.
While driving at approximately 65 mph the motor ceased to function. It began by making a noise. Then the vehicle lost power. There was no power steering or power brakes. Consumer had the vehicle towed to dealer, and was informed that the timing chain blew apart, and there was no compression in the cylinders. Vehicle never indicated that it was running hot.
A week after having the cam-sensor replaced the oil light came on. We proceeded to take it right back to the mechanic, who discovered the "sludged" engine. We had changed the oil every 3,000 miles since purchasing the vehicle. The engine now makes a sound like someone is hitting the insides with a hammer. It is no longer drivable, and we have been told the only option is to replace the engine. We cannot afford the $7,000 to make the replacement.
Engine made noise upon arriving work parking lot. Sounded like fan blade on shroud. Examined, found no evidence of problem. After work the car sounded fine. Drove home, approximated 10 miles. Noise reappears and very quickly engine seized at very low speed on residential street. Would not turn over properly. Failure is to rod bearings 3, 5 and 6. Main bearings and other rod bearings appear to be ok. Heads appear to have sludge on top. Oil pan is relatively clean. Oil and filter have been changed regularly since I purchased car.
Complaint regarding 2000 Dodge Intrepid. The vehicle's engine made noise when started on cold days. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several time but they were unable to duplicate the problem. The service manager later informed the consumer that the engine had sludge in it due to lack of lubrication. The dealer later indicated that the vehicle's warranty would not cover the repairs.
Had begun to notice slight pinging sound in engine. Engine seized up on me while driving home at night from appointment - approx 20 miles away from home. Was able to contact my husband and he hauled car home. Called several locations to get info on rebuilding engine for 1999 Dodge Intrepid. Was told by several mechanics that this particular engine is none for seizing up and not to waste my money on buying a new 2. 7 engine. New engine price around $5,000. Not only am I stuck with 9 more payments, but I also have to carry full coverage insurance since the car is financed. Called Dodge customer service and they would not even open a complaint file.
Consumer took vehicle into the dealer for engine noise, dealer stated needed to replace engine.
My 1998 Dodge Intrepid, 2. 7 liter engine, with 53,000 miles was making a funny engine noise (no prior warning what so ever). I took it to the dealership, and was told I needed a new engine because of "engine sludge. " the cost was $6,990. 00 and I still owed over $4,000. 00 on the vehicle!! unless I could prove I got regular oil changes, there was no recourse. And then they told me because I bought the vehicle used (1 year old) - even that was pointless, because there was no proof the previous owner got regular oil changes!! the more I search, there are so many others out there with this exact same problem. It is an outrage that Dodge isn't acknowledging this. There aren't many families that can take a financial hit of $7,000. 00!.
My engine started making a awful tapping noise 3 blocks away from home. Got home, towed my car to my mechanic and he proceded to tell me I had blown the engine in my car. My mechanic dicussed my problem with other mechanics and the told him that the 2. 7 lit engine in the Intrepid has been nothing but problems for most Intrepid owners. My car was full of oil and I always followed the service schuedule. Right now I am rebuilding the engine that has a bad bearing, has a cracked cam shaft and also threw a piston. The rebuilder has no explination as to what went wrong but that he works on these engines more than he should because they are so new. By the way my car has 80,000 miles on it and did'nt make a sound until this hapened.
I was driving down a road engine sounded fine. All of the sudden there was a loud knock in the engine compartment and then the engine just stopped running. I had to drift down the hill till I could find a place to pull off. I had it towed to two mechanics and both said the engine was shot and that I needed a new one. The engine was replaced at a cost of over $4000.
Drove vehicle to closest dealership at time of engine noise. Vehicle was running when taken to dealership. Dealership looked at engine, said there was sludge in engine, said they could clean the sludge out of engine for $360. 00 and that would probably solve noise problem in engine. Dealership supposedly cleaned sludge out of engine, engine then seized. Dealership asked for receipts of engine oil changes which were provided. Dealership supposedly cleaned out sludge from engine. Engine then seized upon being started. Daimlerchrysler refuses to fix engine.
While driving on highway, vehicle completely shutdown without warning, cause unknown. Also, consumes a lot of oil. The vehicle shut down while on the road without warning, but the dealer replaced the diagnostic censor twice and the vehicle continued failing. The engine makes noise due to cam shaft failure.
Rust on oil level dipstick. Handle broken off oil level dipstick due to heat. Metallic scraping noise from left from of vehicle. Clunking from left front when wheels turned to right and driving in reverse. Steering column moves up and down contacting the dash over bumps. Car taken to dealer for all issues except dipstick tube. None of the problems were corrected. Charged $300 for sway bar end links and power steering pump. New power steering pump still noisy after driving 500 miles as directed by dealer.
