Noticed antifreeze leaking from under center area of car, attempted to pit in antifreeze, leaked out right away. I checked the oil and it was full of antifreeze. The motor is shot. There was no warning no service lights the car has not been over heated, it was very well maintained by a local dealer.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) 2004 Dodge Intrepid sxt VIN: [xxx] car kept shutting down while driving and "bucking" at times. I brought the car to be repaired on 03/07/2008 and the dealer replaced cam shaft position sensor, natural vacuum leak detection switch and canister assy and oxygen sensor. Car started bucking. I brought the car in to be repaired on 10/30/2008 and the mechanic replaced the transmission solenoid. I had to replace the oil pan on 11/06/2008. I found out the oil pan made of thin aluminum. When the oil pan was ordered by the mechanic it was on national backorder by Dodge. Car started to shut down while driving again. I brought the car in to be repaired and the mechanic changed the cam shaft position sensor again. I received a recall notification from Chrysler - emissions recall j18. The recall states the catalytic converters may become damaged from continued operation in "limp-in" mode following a camshaft position sensor fault. I called Chrysler and was told the recall had been put on hold. My car started to shut down again while driving and I could not drive it above 40mph otherwise when braking the transmission would go from 3rd gear to 1st gear (skipping 2nd gear). I brought the car in to be repaired on 03/04/2010 and the car is still in the shop. So far, the mechanic replaced the camshaft position sensor, transmission solenoid and now believes the computer is no good.
The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Intrepid. While exiting a highway at 65 mph, the vehicle stalled. He was able to safely shift the vehicle into neutral and coast to the side of the road. After one day of being parked, he noticed oil leakage under the vehicle. The vehicle has not been inspected or repaired by a technician. The current and failure mileages were 110,000.
The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. The contact noticed that the vehicle was leaking oil. On December 14, 2008, the contact heard a noise when the vehicle was accelerated. He took the vehicle to his mechanic and was informed that the motor failed. He took the vehicle to another garage and the mechanic stated that the motor was failing and needed to be replaced. A new motor would cost $6,200. A report was filed with the manufacturer and they stated that they would not assist with the repair. The vehicle has not yet been repaired. The current and failure mileages were 71,489.

2002 Dodge Intrepid with oil leak. Consumer states that the vehicles engine has a design flaw which produces high levels of engine oil sludge. After the oil leak was repaired, the check engine light illuminated two months later, the consumer was told the vehicle had a transmission leak.
Husband driving home from work at the busiest time of the day car acted like it was going to turn off at a stop light. He turned off the busy rode and the car just suddenly turned off. Started smoking he opened the hood and saw that fluids had leaked out. Nearby was a mechanic shop with help pushed it there. Was put on a diagnostic and we were told that the engine was gone result of a oil sludge problem which causes engine failure. Estimated cost for new engine $5372. I have done some research on this problem and wouldn't even consider putting a new engine in this car.
I had set up an appt. To take my 2001 Dodge Intrepid in for an oil change and to have the engine light checked because it had recently come on. Within a few days of making that appt. , my oil light started coming on every time on put the brakes on. I was able to bring the car in earlier. We had to rent a vehicle for the weekend which we couldn't afford. By the time this was all said and done, our mechanic told us we had an anti-freeze leak and an oil leak. They refuse to repair either one because the last time they fixed an oil leak on a Dodge Intrepid, the car still broke down and they got sued. They can't get to the anti-freeze leak without taking the engine out which in turn will cause more problems with our engine. We're constantly putting oil in it and anti-freeze. We're still paying on this car. We're not the only people with this same problem. There are a couple of class action law suits out there and Chrysler should give people their money back. We have a child in the latter stages of kidney failure and this is suppose to be our reliable vehicle to get her back and forth to albany.
Engine oil light goes on at low idle, 1000 rpm of less, questioned dealer service dept about this and they said that the oil was in need of a change or that it was low do to a leak. Neither of those cases are true in that the oil is changed every 6,000 miles of less according to driving conditions and the owners manual. This car, 2004 Dodge Intrepid is still under the 7year, 70,000 mile extended warranty, but it is close to expiring. Dealer says drive it as is and the light should go out, if not bring it back in. They say the same thing each time, are they waiting until the warranty expires?.
I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid with less than 70,000 miles on it. I just found out it has an oil leak along with other problems. The mechanic said he didn't recommend that I put too much money into it because of the poorly designed engine. As per my mechanic, Chrysler knows of this problem. I have also done the research online and seen hundreds , if not, thousands of complaints. It is ridiculous in a time where most cars run for several hundred thousand miles that a company gets away with a deliberately poorly designed engine that basically starves itself internally of oil, my mechanics words. I think Chrysler should be held accountable for their deliberate actions that are harming thousands of hard-working people.
- the contact stated that on 02/05/07 the 2000 Dodge Intrepid had engine failure. While driving at 20 mph and pulling into a parking lot the vehicle lost power and smoked started coming from under the hood. There were no warning indicator lights, the engine did not have any perceptible failures. The contact had the vehicle towed to a Dodge dealership, and the service mechanic informed the contact that there was oil leaking all over, but he couldn't find the source of the leak. Then, they called and informed him that the head gasket needed to be replaced. The contact stated that after the repair was completed he was informed by the service mechanic that the cause of the engine freezing up was due to a sludge buildup.

1) I bought a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. . . What other events do you need? I later found out that the 2. 7l engine is notorious for engine failure. I had changed the oil every 3m miles and noticed that the engine would make a ticking noise if the oil was low. I wouldn't wait 3m miles because I was changing the oil every time it started to tick. Never once did my oil light come on. 2) the engine was making a ticking noise and I drove it to work. I drove back from work and was driving 20 - 30 mph home and the oil light and the check engine light went on and the car died. I had to have the car towed and was told that the engine had seized and was -4 quarts low of oil even though there was no leak and no spots in my parking area to tell me that I was losing oil. Since the failure, I have it in storage at a friend's parking spot and am still making payments on a car that I can no longer drive . I have two years of payments to go until I can finally "officially" junk it. The consequences are that I am paying 6,000 dollars on a car that doesn't work. 3) I was told that it would cost $4,000 to get another engine and have not done so and went out and bought a used Honda for that amount with more miles that will run longer. All parts are in tact on the vehicle just as I purchased it.
Car has 94,000 odd miles on it. While driving my car the oil light came on. I had a oil change 2 months prior. Checked the oil was 1 quart low, added one quart. Drove car a couple hours later it started smoking and the oil starting leaking entirely out of car. Made it home crunk the car back up and the car sounded like a lawn mower was under my hood. When mechanic looked at it he informed me that the engine was shot and that it was unsual for the engine to go out so soon because I didn't have a lot of mileage on my car. I have been out of a car since then, the cost estimate for repairs are from 3. 000 to 6,000. It is not under warranty. I am in the process of sending information to the impartial services group. And I have filed a complaint with the center for auto safety.

I own a 2002 Intrepid and the engine lock up 100,000 miles . Check engine light came on check came up gas cap. Was driving and low oil light came on had just check oil it was full. Drove about 10 miles stop check again still full . Checked for leaks none. Went about 2 miles and start knock and locked up. Talked to mechanic said he has rebuilt over `100 of them that have done same thing. Chrysler knew engine was not going to last. Only hold 4. 5 qaurts of oil and oil port holes not big enough for that motor a 2. 7 thanks lyman underwood.
It all started with what I thought was just a broken water connector on the top of the Chrysler 2. 7 liter engine in our 2002 Dodge Intrepid. I replaced the part myself and thought that it was just a simple issue. But the very next day my wife went to work and got stranded when the car overheated again but there was leak this time just an extremely hot engine. After the engine cooled down and I was able to start it again it was clear to me that the engine had cratered and that it was all due to an internal oil problem from the beginning. As I have researched this issue it has become very clear that this is an ongoing problem with this engine and when we took it to a Dodge dealer they were not aware of the problem until I told them about it. After tearing the engine down the dealership said the problem was the same as them others described in the websites, oil sludge causing the internal lubrication to fail. The dealer gave us $800. 00 trade in for a car worth $4000. 00 which we had work very had to pay off early. The only other recourse was to have a used or rebuild installed at a cost of $5500 to $8500. 00 with no guarantee that it would not happen again. So now we have a new used car and a monthly payment again for something that Chrysler knows is a problem but refuses to do anything about.
The caller stated while driving at 30 mph. , all power failed in the vehicle, stalling the engine. After coming to a stop, the contact was unable to dissengage the automatic transmission from drive to the park position. No accident or injury occurred and no police report was filed. After inspection, the dealers mechanic informed the contact all the oil had leaked out of the vehicle and caused the engine to seize.
My 2001 Dodge Intrepid engine failed while trying to pull off of the road leaving my mother half in and half out of traffic. The mechanic states there is no oil within the engine. However, we just had a complete oil change in October of this year. There is has been no sign of leaking and no oil light indicator until immediately prior to the engine locking. After reading everything on the website I am appalled that Dodge can get away with this. As consumers we have to join together and force them to take responsibility. The average consumer cannot afford to throw hard earned money out of the window. We plan to junk the car and not risk further loss after reading these horror stories. I will never purchase another vehicle from Dodge or Chrysler. I spoke with an online engine rebuilder who called this the "engine of the year". They are selling so many there is a backlog. . I have been having a problem with my engine oil light flashing at random. Also the oil just seems to disappear into thin air. I have had the oil signet unit replaced and I follow regular oil change schedules. I have taken it to the auto mechanic on several occasions due to small oil leaks. I have heard horrifying stories concerning the 2001 Dodge Intrepid and their engine failures. I have to believe that they are true because as of right now two of my CO-worker's 2001 Dodge Intrepids are sitting on our college campus due to engine failures. I am so terrified of driving this car. My job requires that I do a lot of traveling and I only have this one vehicle. Based on my research in the last couple of months that Chrysler is well aware of this major defect and should be held accountable.
I bought a new 2000 Dodge Intrepid for 22k, nice car but pc of crap engine. I was aware of the 2. 7l piece of crap engine one before my engine died. . I check/change the oil regularly around 2800-3000 miles. . . Dodge denies consumers do this though. . For the last year or so, every 1500 miles I was always down a quart of oil. . . ? no leaks, can't see any smoke. . My engine sensor light came on. Within the next few days my car was acting like I had no oil in it. . No power with engine. I was on the highway right next to a Dodge dealer which was convenient. They had diagnosed that my crank and cam sensor were "no good". . And replaced them for $400. . A month later I was coming home from work and my oil light came on. . . ? I pulled over into a parking lot to check the oil. . I was only down maybe a pint. The next morning I checked/added the oil and went to work. I never made it to work. About 1/4 mile from work the engine sounded like I was out of oil?? I brought to the repair shop near work. They said it was internal and would touch it after draining some oil and saw metal flakes. . . I spoke with my mechanic and he told me all about the lovely 2. 7 engines. . I went on the internet and have read horror stories about this engine, as well as Dodge dealers would do nothing for the consumer. I've been telling everyone I see with a Dodge 2. 7 to get rid of it fast. And never to buy a "Dodge/chrsyler" product until they recall and replace this engine. .
The contact stated the engine failed while driving at 65 mph. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop. The serviceman said that the engine would have to be replaced. The antifreeze leaked into the oil. The engine locked. The manufacturer has not been contacted. The contact does not plan to repair the vehicle.
My name is lysa jordan and I own a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. I am the second owner of the car purchased with 22,000 miles on it. I kept up with maintenance through the route 4 Chrysler/ Dodge dealer where I purchased the car (which has a pending class action lawsuit against them). The oil light began to blink so I had it diagnosed at a Dodge dealer near piscataway new jersey. I was told that the car was leaking oil in the engine. I advised them that I have specific parking spaces at home and work and never have I had any oil spots under the car. Three weeks ago, the car unexpectedly stopped running when I slowed down for a red light. When the light turned green, I started the car and proceeded to turn right and the car died as I was trying to turn. I had it towed to three different auto mechanics and all concluded that the car manufacturer should have issued a recall. The engine is no longer operable and the lowest quote I have found is $6000. 00. Can you please help me?.

Dt:consumer was driving 60-65 mph in 2001 Dodge Intrepid when he heard a noise like a hose bursting or breaking. Immediately looked at temperature gauge ,and it went to hot. Consumer turned on the heater, and the vehicle temperature went back to normal. Consumer pulled off the road, and looked under the hood, and saw that was oil leaking. Consumer parked the vehicle at that point and there was a steady flow of oil, at some point it did stop. Consumer was having the vehicle towed.
Bought 2001 Intrepid with 53000 miles on it, I changed my own oil in it every 3000 miles, at 83000 miles I heard a slight rod knock, took it to dealer they said it needed a new engine, I have an extended Ford warranty but was not honored because they said it had an oil leak and the oil and filter reciepts and the credit card bills from napa was not sufficient proof the oil had been changed. The car never leaked oil , they are using that as an excuse and it is there word against mine, meanwhile I have a 2001 Intrepid that they want me to pay for tearing it down, and I get my car back in peices or pay them twice as much and they will put it back the way it was. Or pay the 7000 dollars to put an engine in it when they said the whole car was only worth 4900.
While driving on the freeway at approximately 70 mph, the engine seized without warning. Owner had the vehicle towed to a mechanic and was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. Updated 1/19/2006 - the oil light illuminated on the dash then the engine seized. The vehicle was sent to the salvage yard. The weather strips at the doors were leaking.
Normal driving on interstate. Engine light came on. Before I could get onto next exit (1/4 mile), engine started knocking. Took exit and pulled directly into closed car dealership parking lot. Engine died. Oil leaking from engine. Called mechanic. Towed car to his shop. Had car for 6 months trying to find replacement engine. Put in rebuilt engine. After 5 months, engine began knocking as before. Stopped immediately and had towed to my house where it now sits. 1st engine and parts not available.
First my tps sensor went out no car, 2 days; then my map sensor went out no car ,2 days; then oil leaked from the engine onto the starter causing it to stop working no car, 3 days; then the engine started knocking. I stopped driving it south holland Dodge gave me a written estimate of 7000 no car, 17 days and counting.
I made a short drive home at approx. 5:45 am when my engine oil warning light illuminated and there was a sudden lost of power and a hard knock sound. I was in the process of turning into my community at the time of the incident. I restarted the car, it repeatedly knocked loudly the next 100 yards to my home. I then had it towed and was told that the engine was totaled. The warning light began to come on the previous day when the car was idling, with plenty of oil in the engine. So I had already made an appointment when this sudden engine failure came to be. There were no signs of this problem until it happened and the only repair needed on the car was a minor oil leak which should not of caused such a drastic problem like this.

2001 Dodge interpret, the first time the vehicle stalled steering wheel shook and the engine light turned on. Vehicle would still be moving without pressure being put on the gas pedal. Vehicle would shut off and would not start again. Consumer had to try to get the vehicle to start back for about 20 minutes before the vehicle would turn back on. Consumer had taken the vehicle to the dealer various times, and dealer could not find the cause of the problem. After taking the vehicle to the dealer 3 months later he told the consumer that after running a diagnostics test that there was no signal from the cam sensor, dealer replaced the cam sensor and checked it again. Vehicle was still under warranty at this time. The problem happened again around two years later, at the last oil check-up the vehicle was shaking. At first consumer that the problem was from some other matter with the vehicle, afterwards the problems with the vehicle reminded the consumer of the first incident, the vehicle was shaking again, the engine light had come on, there was smoke coming from under the hood. Vehicle stalled again. When consumer tried to drive vehicle again the engine light would come on and the vehicle would shake, after consumer had parked the vehicle it was leaking oil and another fluid mixed with the oil. Consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer. Dealer said that engine needed to be replaced. Consumer had dialed 911 the second time the vehilce had stalled in the middle of four lane traffic, there was a police cruser that told consumer to move the vehicle. They were suppose to send back up but no one showed up. Consumer was unsure if there was a report filed.
Engine light came on repeatedly and engine caught fire. The fire had come from the rear hood area. The dealer stated that the fire started from the #5 fuel injector/wiring harness/fuel rail. The vehicle also lost braking power and revved during the incident. There was an oil leak prior to the incident where the rocker arm cover was replaced, the power steering was noisy, leaked, and was replaced, and the bleeder screw was broken and the thermostat housing was replaced.
I am in sales and drive extensively. Because of this I am very carefull to change my oil every 3000 miles. I currently have 91000 miles on my car, it is due for an oil change in roughly 700 miles. While driving I noticed a faint ticking sound and about two minutes later t got very loud. I pulled the car over and it shut off. The car did not overheat, the oil light never came on. I had a recomendation to a good mechanic who towed it and found that the engine had less than a quart of oil in it. There were no leaks, and it has never smoked. It has also never heated up. My engine is out of warranty, but I have been told by my oil change guy, who has also inspected the vehicle, that Dodge is having a lot of problems with the 2. 7l motor. A local dealer told him this. At any rate, I have a blown motor on a car that is 3 years old, and apparently no recourse. Please help me if you can. Dt.
There was a light ticking noise coming from engine area, that got louder and louder. Consumer took vehicle to dealer, and dealer stated that short block caused engine to leak oil. Please provide any further information.
Vehicle had a serious oil leak. Dealership wasaware of problem.
Transmission was leaking fluid from underneath vehicle. Dealership was aware of problem. There were no injuries to report. The engine was leaking oil and was repaired. The consumer says the steering wheel was making noise when making a right turn, but the dealer could not duplicate the problem.
