Driving on freeway at 65mph when engine jumped to high rpm then dropped to low rpm and quit. Steam coming out from under hood. Found the water outlet box had blown the top off, engine overheated, and piston rod broke. Many complaints of the plastic welded seam on the water outlet box failing on the Dodge Intrepid. This stranded me on the freeway in a bad area. Very poor design water outlet box. . Repair box is now a two piece assembly bolted together. They obviously knew of this defect and changed the design without recalling or repairing any. Now need new engine due to overheating when the box failed.

I own a 2000 Dodge Intrepid and have had several mechanical problems. I had to have the transmission rebuilt when it was only 3 years old. Just this past Thursday I was driving on the highway and my engine just stopped, causing all powere steering, etc. To go out. I had it towed to a local dealership who told me the engine was locked up and estimated $3100 to rebuild my engine $3900 for used engine and twice as much for a new engine. Grant it, at this point I'm still undecided as to what I'm going to do. The dealership said that my engine overheated and locked up. My car showed no indication of overheating. . . No lights came on, no temperature gauge reading hot and no signs. My car was driving normally and just stopped.

2000 Dodge Intrepid. Consumer complained about engine problems about a year after purchasing the car. The engine overheated and caused the car to stall. Took vehicle to the dealership 4 times and they said it was a sensor which they replaced the first three times free of charge. The last time took vehicle to the dealer and they said engine blew out. And it needed to be replaced. Consumer did not have the engine replaced because could not find a replacement. The only place that could get an engine was from Chrysler, and that would cost more that what the car was worth.
Engine failure: I had the car for 7 months. It suddenly made a high pitch squeeling noise. I pulled over, popped the hood to see if I could find what was causing the noise. The noise stopped so I drove to my destination another 11 miles. I watched the temp. Gauge and the engine never overheated. I parked at my destination and noticed a trail of water and antifreeze. I never started it again. I towed it to the repair shop and they told me that the engine was blown, unrepairable, cost could be close to $5,000 for a new engine. Window: the back right passenger window will go down but will not come back up unless you turn the car on and off 5 or 6 times and keep trying the window. I didn't have the money to get it fixed. I figured I could live with it if I didn't roll the window down.

Engine overheated. Consumer pulled to side, added coolant, and it immediately reheated. Took vehicle to dealer, and they said engine head gasket needed to be replaced. Also, vehicle was unsafe because there was no power steering when car went dead.
