I own a 2001 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7l v-6 engine with just over 83,000 miles on it. Driving between tampa and orlando florida, engine started making a rattling noise and lost power. No warning lights came on and the temperature gauge was normal. I was able to coast to nearby exit and get off of expressway, but stranded in remote area. It appeared car overheated with a burst bleeder housing. After getting it towed to orlando, I learned that the engine blew a head gasket and was damaged beyond repair. Replacement quotes are in the range of $3,500 to $4,000 range.
My Dodge Intrepid se 2. 7l engine suffered a blown engine with no warning on 4-16-06 on my way home from work. There were no indications of a problem, no warning lights and no signs of overheating. I suddenly heard a rattling noise coming from the engine that increased quickly to a loud banging. I got off the exit immediately and coasted into a hotel parking lot. I turned off the engine and raised the hood to see antifreeze all over the engine. I removed the cap to the coolant container and brown antifreeze boiled over onto the ground. The oil had been changed on 2/7/06 and the fluids topped off. The oil and fluids had been checked every week after that up until the engine blew and the fluids were of normal color and consistency. The car had approximately 65,000 miles on it when I purchased it and proper maintenance had been maintained throughout the time I have had my it. The car had just recently reached 100,000 miles and I still owe nearly $5000 on this car, have no vehicle to get to work and can't afford to buy a new one with the car payment I have to make on it each month. I have been told repeatedly that the 2. 7l engine is worthless and there was nothing I could have done to prevent this catastrophe from occurring. It would cost me approximately $2000-$3000 to repair or replace the engine with no guarantee it wouldn't sludge up again and blow a second time. I also experienced numerous other problems from day one, such as constant squealing from the brakes and rotors despite changing them out twice, followed by problems with the steering from suspension problems and problem steering bolts. The problems on this car from day one range from the issues mentioned before to electrical shorts, faulty steering bolts, broken the-rod ends and suspension problems all of which are common issues I have researched and found on numerous blogs and websites such as Dodgeintrepid. Net.

Car 99 Intrepid with 2. 7 engine began making a rattling noise and oil pressure dropped. Car was pulled over and a tow truck was called. The failure is described as main bearings breaking up and damaging engine. Car had just been to Dodge dealership within the month had oil change and pan was replaced due to wear from previous oil changes. Was sufficient oil in car and the problem was explained to be a common problem with the Intrepid 2. 7 engine. The only fix is to replace entire engine. It has been explained to me by numerous auto places that this happens so frequently in interpids that there is surprise it has not been recalled. The problem has been described as inadequate transfer of oil around engine due to poor design, which explains how even cars that have plenty of oil and have been properly maintained suffer from a catastrophic failure due to bearing shredding up and destroying the engine. We are currently getting quotes for replacement of motor various auto places recommend replacing with a 3. 2 or 3. 5 as the motors are easier to get a hold of and are reliable and are not believed to be problematic like the 2. 7.
My engine has sludge build up. My ex-husband and my 2 mechanics have all taken classes offered by Dodge because of the defects in their 2. 7l engine. They were told by a Chrysler instructor during a training class for 5 star mechanics/dealerships that Chrysler has identified 8 items needing upgrades in regards to the 2. 7l engine and that the engine was faulty from the manufacturer. I have lifetime oil changes with the dealership that I bought my car from. I take it in regular according to my owner's manual. Two days before I parked it (one week after my routine oil change) my car had a rattling sound from under the hood. I took it to my mechanic, he told me the above information. I went to my other mechanic and my ex-husband and all agreed with the above information.

Purchased vehicle in February 2005. Approximately one month after purchase, check engine light came on. Return to dealership for repair, was told it was emissions leak. In September 2005, heard rattling noise while driving, then vehicle systems shut down (power steering, etc. ), vehicle shut off. Could not restart the vehicle. Vehicle was towed and mechanic said the engine was locked up.
My 2001 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7, the one that has had over 9500 complaints in my area alone. I was driving down the highway when a loud rattling noise started coming from the engine. It sounded like a card in a bicycle spoke. I checked the oil and all the fluids under the hood although it was not time for a change was ok. Then I proceeded down the road when it lost power and quit leaving me stranded. After having the car towed and getting 5 mechanics to look at it, even at the dealership, I was told the motor was blown. It was history with just 84,000 miles on it. Dodge advertises you don't even need a tune up until 100,000 miles. Apparently that is why! I still owe 11,000 on the car, making payments for another year not including insurance that I must carry because it is mortgaged property. Every dealership that I have talked to has told me that the 2. 7 motor from Dodge doesn't last past 70,000 miles. It will cost me between 6500 to 7000. 00 for another motor and most mechanics don't want to fix it because of previous history's with the Dodge 2. 7 motor. I can't trade it because it has no value now. I can't sell it without a running motor, so appears that I will have an expensive lawn ornament for the next year. One mechanic even told me that there was a class action law suit to Dodge concerning the 2. 7 engines, but I have not been able to find it yet. I have seen more complaints posted on the web about this engine and others looking for the class action suit, that I am shocked. I hope no one else has to go through what we have with this car. I will certainly never buy another Dodge vehicle.
The caller's states son was driving a t30 mph and vehicle stalled. He heard a rattling noise and the vehicle stalled. Driver could not get vehicle restarted. Vehicle was towed to dealer. Dealer has not given a reason but said it needed a new engine. Manufacturer gave her a reference number to issue a complaint. Vehicle is now sitting driveway with the engine pieces in the trunk.
Dt: oil engine light was blinking, while car was traveling the engine started rattling noise. When the hood was opened the engine was smoking. The mechanic notified the consumer that the engine was blown. The consumer was traveling at 70 mph when this happened. This has not been corrected by the consumer as of yet. Before this happened the oil light blinked and the exhaust pipe smoked.
The engine started making a rattling noise as I was driving home from work. I pulled the car into a parking lot and the engine died and would not restart. I had it towed to a garage where they told me the timing chain had gone out because of engine sludge. They also told me that these 2. 7 engines were nothing but junk. The motor beeds to be replaced but since I couldn't afford the $6,000 that will cost, I had to have it towed back to my home.
While driving to work,I noticed the engine was making rattling noise. There was no oil indicator light on or engine light on. I took the car in to 3 separate mechanics and was informed by all 3 that the car needed a new engine. They all said that there was sludge in the engine. I took this car in as recommended every 3000 miles for an oil change. This car is barely at 62000 miles and there is no way this should have happened. I was informed it would cost me a bare minimum of $4000. 00 to get the car running. I called the corporate office of daimler Chrysler and they insisted they had not heard of a problem with these engines.
I was driving and saw the oil light flicker which I thought was strange as I had just had oil changed less than 1000 miles before. Then heard a rattling noise in the engine was close to a mechanic so I pulled in and he informed me that he had 5 of these engines with the exact same problem looked at my paperwork found that I had a 7 year 100000 mile warranty as I am only at 78000 had my car towed to a dealer.
2001 Dodge Intrepid se started making a loud rattling noise for no reason. Had car towed to a garage, and mechanic refused to work on it. Had car towed to second garage, mechanic told us that the engine needed to be replaced. Car had 70000 miles and kept in good condition with regular oil changes and mantaince. Told it would cost $5000 for repair still owe $12000 on car. This is absolutly unreal. I guess it will just sit and rot in my driveway. Some one needs to make Dodge walk up to the plate. This is pure robbery. I was also told that this year Intrepid was bad for engine failure. And this web site proves it.
The check engine light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. A rattling noise was heard coming from the rear. Consumer took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the engine needed to be replaced because a rod sheared off the engine, and poor lubrication.
While driving, the consumer heard a rattling sound. The consumer took the vehicle into the mechanic and was told the engine was defective. The consumer proceeded to drive the vehicle home at 15 mph and the engine shut down.
The engine in my Dodge Intrepid began making a minor rattling noise, the noise proceeded to get progressively worse until the engine started rattling loudly. I took the car to a mechanic because I thought it was the transmission, which I had repaired the car continued to make the same loud noise not less than 2 weeks the car made this tremendous rattling as if something had come a loose it started smoking and then the engine died. I took the car to another mechanic who rebuilt the engine in little over a month the engine went out again.
The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 55 mph, the engine failed and caused the contact to pull off the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that two of the connecting rods cracked and caused the failure. On August 26, 2007, while driving 25 mph, the engine made a rattling noise and shut down completely. The powertrain was unknown. The failure mileage was 52,803 and current mileage was 89,772.

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with 52000 miles. I recently this car has been staling, sometimes on a freeway. It has also been driving rough. When I took it into a Dodge dealership, I was told they need to place a rail on a chain to prevent a rattling noise. $400 was the quote. I told them to start work on it. Later they called and told me there was sludge on the motor and it must be replaced. $7000!!! they also told me they can not put the motor back in. That it would not start. They (oakland Dodge in madison hts, mi) also told me that I have not been changing my oil regularly. This is a false accusation, however I do not have oil change receipts. I have also changed my own oil several times. I am now stuck with a rental car until I can afford $7000.
Consumer states that the engine has blown in her auto right at 70,000 miles and 4 years old. She also states that before this happened her auto was making a rattling noise and the check engine light came on, she took it to the dealer and was told that they needed to change the oil. She states that her husband had the oil change, then attempted to drive the auto when it just cut off and would not start. Then a mechanic , after checking the auto, told her that her engine was blown.
While driving at 45 mph consumer heard a rattling noise. Engine blew out. This was caused by sludge due to oil build up, per dealership. Also, dealership indicated that oil build up was caused by lack of oil change. Vehicle had regular oil changes every 3500 miles.
Upon starting vehicle consumer heard a rattling noise from under the hood. Without any indication vehicle stalled/ shut down. Dealer told consumer that the engine needed to replaced.
