1 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2004 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 03/11/2013

I went to leave work and my car would not start. At first I thought maybe it was the battery or starter. After having both of these tested and several mechanics later was told that my engine was seized. I have always checked the oil and had it changed accordingly. This is not fair I trusted that this car would be reliable and dependable now I am stuck with no vehicle in a town with little to no public transportation. How could Chrysler/Dodge knowingly let people purchase this engine when there are several thousand complaints on it? how about a recall and some integrity and honesty in your product instead of screwing single mothers like me. . .

2 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

Engine failure on 2002 Dodge Intrepid se 2. 7l v6. Per mechanic - timing chain failure and other engine damage due to poor oil flow/overheated oil causing sludge and subsequently clogged oil ports and excessive degradation of oil. This happened even though used full synthetic for entire life of car and changed oil regularly (~ every 5-8k miles) oil.

3 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 07/03/2007

Engine failed on interstate 70 in kansas city, kansas. Fortunately occurred as we were approaching an exit ramp and I was able to steer (without power steering) onto ramp and get stopped (without power brakes) before entering a signal-controlled intersection. No warning signals came on. No warning lights or sounds were activated. The temperature gauge remained within normal operating range. Engine smoked but did not catch fire. We waited in 90-degree heat for tow services. So far, mechanic has discovered destroyed thermostat, melted thermostat housing, damaged intake, bent cam shaft, warped cylinder heads, and engine must be replaced because warpage of heads and cam shaft is so severe. Engine failure is an apparent known liability of this engine, a 2001 Chrysler 2. 7 liter v6. Engine will be replaced to correct the failure due to concerns about damage to lower parts of oem engine as a result of extreme heat.

5 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 02/09/2006

My used 2002 Dodge Intrepid with a Chrysler 2. 7 engine started knocking like crazy after stopping on me several times while driving. The first expensive "repair" to correct this problem was replacement of a fuel pump and a "fuel pump cont module carter electric fuel ass" which had cracked (345. 00 for the part, $600. 00 for the "repair"). Two weeks later the engine was knocking even more loudly and I was informed by pep boys that the engine was shot--locked up--and that I should have it towed to a Dodge dealer. $172. 00 later, the Dodge dealer had towed my car and told me the same thing. The warranty company demanded oil change maintenance receipts which we could not produce as we have friends who change the oil for us. We were told by several engine repair companies we contacted (trying to find an affordable option) that the 2. 7 engine had a defective timing chain which does not allow oil to pass through and be burned properly, causing sludge to build up and destroy the engine. Of course Dodge and the warranty company "blamed" it on our "poor maintenance"--we still owe 9,000 on the car!!!--the currie motors Dodge dealer wanted to charge $750. 00 to "tear down" the engine, then said they could put in a refurbished engine for $5300. 00!! no apologies for their defective engine. No consideration whatever. They seemed gleeful that they were going to make so much money from our distress! each engine replacement company we called to inquire about the cost of replacing an engine asked, before we even told them, "is it a Chrysler 2. 7?" the Dodge Chrysler company should recall all autos with 2. 7 engines and replace the engines for free with an improved 2. 7 model. I know after this experience that I will never buy another Dodge or Chrysler or any other model marketed by these dealerships. I regret that I had no idea about Dodge inferiority before I purchased the vehicle. I didn't do my "homework," I guess.

6 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 09/25/2005

The car was driving good. I noticed a little jerking but was not too worried as I just had an oil changed recently. When leaving from my work for lunch, the car began to jerk and stall badly. I turned around and parked the car my engine light came on. The next day I took it to aamco thinking it was the transmission. They performed tests and the report said crank shaft sensor. I started the car up and the light was no longer on. I took it to my mechanic and he took off the oil pan and discovered scraps of metal in my oil. He stated that this is something to do with the engine. I drove the car for about 2 more weeks and decided to get another vehicle instead of taking my chances with this one since the repair cost is more than $5000. While getting my other vehicle serviced, I decided to drive the Intrepid. While on the highway going at about 55mph, the car shut down completely. Luckily I was on the right lane of the highway and pulled to the shoulder. If I had been going slower, it would have come to a complete stop. Since I still owe for the car ($8000), it was hard to trade so I kept it and now have two car payments. After councel, I had no choice but to file for chapter 13 bankruptcy in order to counteract my living expenses with the two car payments. I am a single mother of four children, work full time, and presently in my last year of college for my bachelors degreee. I had no choice but find good transportation because I could not afford to repair the Intrepid and go without transportation for 2 months while I paid it off. For repairs, I have been advised to upgrade the engine to a 3. 5l and use a conversion kit from a reputable company to complete the job. The 2. 7l are not good engines and they stated that if that one failed, another most likely would do the same in the near future. You know what I found interesting was that the 3. 5l is actually 1/3 cheaper than the 2. 7l! that is because the 2. 7l are hard to find because they are always going out!.

Failure Date: 11/07/2004

9 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2004 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 10/11/2004

While driving home from work on 10/11/04, my Dodge Intrepids engine just shut off and all power went off. The engine light went on and I pulled over to the side of the road. After about 5 minutes of trying to get it going again, it restarted. This happened three more times, in a period of about an hour, over 30 miles. The following morning, I took it in to moss brothers motors and rented a car (they have no service vehicals). Two hours later, moss calls that the car is ready, I was told it was a "computer service problem". The lengine light was no longer on when I picked the car up. The same day, on my way home, the samething happend (10/12/04). The car suddenly shut down on a very busy trafic corner and I had know time but to swerve out of my lane and do a ninty degree turn, over the curb and into a empty parking lot to avoid a major accident. I had no power steering and no brakes. The following morning, I took the car back to moss brothers motor and left it, relating my same problems as the day before. Two hours later, moss calls telling me the car is ready. I was told it wad another "computer related" problem. Since then it has not shutt down.

10 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 09/03/2004

With no warning my 1999 Intrepid with a 2. 7 liter motor died on the side of interstate 10. (VIN 2b3hd46r6xh704022) with only 88,533 miles and regular maintenance my mechanic said one of the pistons disintegrated and it needs a new motor.

11 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

Engine failure @ 136,000 miles oil changed regularly. Motor failed at 65 mph. Was able to get off the road. Have had 2 egr valves replaced, and was told the rest of the motor was healthy.

12 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 03/23/2004

My 2001 Dodge Intrepid with 52,000 miles just suddenly came up with a clogged egr valve, was burning oil, and had a rod knock. I though this was strange for a car with so few miles until I saw the great number of websites describing similar breakdowns and explaining the design flaws that cause this premature engine breakdown. I also found out that the manufacturer does not deal with customers on this issue and the general concensus seems to be that the dealer is willing to lie and cheat to avoid dealing with this issue and even has the nerve to continue releasing vehicles with the same defects. Our dealer looked at the oil problem, mentioned the knock and sent us on our way as if it was no big deal, the car coded out (check engine ligh) soon there after and I brought it back and they just acted matter of factly and said it needs $9500 to replace the engine that has only $52k on it. This was a blow and then I found out this is a common occurance.

13 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 11/24/2003

Purchased this 1999 Dodge Intrepid (2. 7 l engine) for son 2 months ago with 98,000 miles. Ran perfectly for 4000 miles then it wouldn't start. Once we got the top end torn down found that one of the timing chain guides had disintegrated, caused the timing chain to jump, and wound up bending all of the intake valves. Inspection of the inside of the engine revealed an extreme sludge problem, almost like it was full of tar! after doing some research on the web it appears that this appears to be a problematic engine. The parts guy at Dodge dealer indicated (off the record) that these 2. 7 engines had problems in hot southern climates due to running hot internally and burning the oil.

14 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2000 Dodge Intrepid

16 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid

Failure Date: 08/06/2002

2. 7l engine started to make loud noise. Took engine apart and found that timing chain guides had disintegrated. Replaced guides, rod bearings and oil pump. Cleaned all sludge from engine. Check engine started to flash. Car lost power. Had car towed to dealership. They couldn't find anything wrong with the car. Car started up for them. Didn't find any codes in computer. Drove car for about 2 months before problems started again. Check engine light stayed on. Took to independent shop and got an asd relay problem and tcm relay problem. Replaced relays. Car ran fine for about 3 months. Problems started again. When this happened the first time the car had been driven about 70 miles. After the last time it was driven 20 miles. Towed to dealer. Stated that there is a timing problem and alot of sludge in the motor. Estimate of $1200 to try to find out what is wrong. Also had to replace a/c prior to all of these problems. I have had the car for 3. 5 years and have not driven it for almost 2 of them. Sending in the payoff so I can get rid of the piece of junk. Have heard that the 2. 7 is nothing but problems.
