I got my car in 2004 with appx 30,000 miles on it. Every since I got it the check engine light would go on and off. Just recently the vehicle started making a loud noise when I drive it so I took it to 3 different mechanics and they all confirmed that I need a new engine and stated that this is typical of a 2. 7 engine from Chrysler/Dodge. One of the mechanics stated that he repaired 3 different Dodge Intrepids in the last quarter of last year for the exact same problem. I have had quite a few things replaced on this car but now I have to get a new engine? I still owe appx $5,000 on my car and b/c it is a Dodge with a lot of miles on it, it is not worth alot. There are so many issues with the 2. 7 engine that I do not understand why there wasn't a recall and the company is required to replace these engines. I have small children that have to ride in my car and I feel that it is very unsafe to ride it because you don't know when the engine will go out.

My car died on January 23rd for good while I was driving it. The day before I was driving home from college and I was only going about 40 miles per hour when my car just died. For no reason at all. I was able to start it back up and make it home. The following day my boyfriend, me and our son were on our way back home from my mothers house we turned into cvs and the car died!!!!! it started back up and we made it out of the way of the other cars behind us. When it restarted this time it was an awful noise coming from the engine. We parked it and I called my step-dad and he said to try and get it home and he would look at it the next day. We got the car home and he came to look at it and said he hasn't ever seen sludged up oil like that in his life!!! he tried to start it a few times and it wouldn't. So now I have this car sitting in my driveway undrivable!!!!! =I have two children, one in school and one not. I'm in college and this is our only vehicle!!!!!!!!!! now what do I do????????? I'm not made of money and I have no way to buy a new engine!! please find some way to help me.
The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle overheated. The contact heard a loud noise coming from the engine compartment and had the vehicle towed to a local mechanic. The mechanic stated that the engine failed. The contact could not afford to replace the engine, so he had the vehicle towed to his residence. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 92,000.
The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Intrepid. While driving at an unknown speed, the oil light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The contact's father-in-law installed a new battery. The vehicle restarted and the contact pulled back onto the highway. She immediately heard a loud noise coming from under the hood and pulled off the road. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic and the contact was informed that the failure was due to excessive engine sludge that caused a rod to snap in the engine. The mechanic stated that a new engine would cost $5,000. The failure and current mileages were 89,000.

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid and I bought it from extreme Dodge in jackson mi in 2001. In June 2005 I was driving and it started make this awful noise so I pulled of into a parking lot and turned it off called my husband and when he got there the car wouldn't start so we had the car towed home and had our mechanic come over to check it out and he told us the timing chain when out. So we bought the parts and had him take care of it. Then I drove it for about 6 months and it happened again so this time we took it to the dealer and had them fix it this time. Again drove it for about 18 months and now it is broke down again same thing. I cant afford to keep putting timing chains in this car every 8 to 10 months at 1,800 to 2,300 dollars a pop. And I hear so many people say how bad the interepids are known for this problems. Well I wish I would have know this before I bought the car because I never would have bought it.
The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 55 mph, the vehicle began making a loud noise. The contact drove directly to her mechanic, who stated that there was sludge in the cylinder and the entire bottom half of the engine. Additionally, the timing chain was stretched and failed. The powertrain was unknown. The current mileage was 32,114 and failure mileage was 32,110.
The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle completely shut off and was towed to the contact's personal mechanic. The contact stated that the vehicle made a rumbling noise before shutting off. This would be the second time replacing the engine. The VIN was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 110,000.
My 2001 Dodge Intrepid, with the 2. 7 engine, just started making terrible noises in the engine, Dodge dealership says it needs a new engine. . . At around $5,000! it has 99,500 miles on it, I just bought the car last month!.
The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 5 mph the contact heard a loud noise near the engine. The dealer stated that the failure was caused by the timing chain, and therewas sludge build up inside the engine. No repairs have been made to the vehicle. The current and failure mileage were 94,000.
I would like to file a complaint about the 1999 Dodge Intrepid. The engine blew out at 110000, in perfect condition, I had the oil changed every 300 miles, and had recently just flushed the transmission fluid. I kept it in peak condition. One day while driving to work it made loud noises. I was close to my mechanics shop and just drove it there. As I pulled in I heard a loud pop and the mechanics confirmed that the engine blew out, and how horrible this engine was. Would like to receive some type of reimbursement for this. I heard there was a class action lawsuit, which I would surely like to sign up for, any insight would be helpful.

: the contact stated while driving 70 mph on the interstate highway, the oil warning light illuminated and a loud noise was heard just as all power failed and the vehicle was steered off the road. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. Oil was found under the vehicle where it stopped and on the wrecker platform. The problem was believed to be a thrown rod. The service dealer and manufacturer were not notified. Updated 10/17/2006 - the consumer has ordered an remanufactured engine.
The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 20 mph, the vehicle began making loud noises and would not accelerate over 20 mph. The vehicle then shut completely off and had to be towed. The engine was replaced. Approximately two years later, the second engine failed. There is no recall for this failure. The current mileage was 167,000 and failure mileage was 78,000. Updated 06/03/08. Updated 05/30/08.
While my cousin had borrowed the car, the car stalled and he could not get it started again. The car was towed to a mechanic and the mechanic did say that with the horrendous noise the car was making, that the engine would need to be either rebuilt, or replaced, based on what he called a rod knock. When I had another mechanic look at the car, he proceeded to say the same thing. This is a car that in 7 years of me owing it, I put on less than 70,000 on the car in that time. I have always done oil changes regularly and took good care of the car, to now have it sitting in a driveway, unable to start !.
I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. Recently, while driving on interstate 70 the car's engine made a loud noise and then suddenly died. I was barely able to escape being struck by other cars as I steered onto an exit ramp. Our local Dodge dealership diagnosed the engine trouble as oil sludge requiring a new engine. We change our oil regularly. This is a well documented problem with the Chrysler 2. 7 l engine. . Read more...
Driving n on 59 s when vehicle made awful noise-pulled over and came to stop-called wrecker and took to dealer from whom car was purchased-engine had blown even though oil change had been done day before and on regular basis-had car less than 2 years-car needs new engine-would cost more than car is worth if I could even find a decent engine-company won't fix even though this is an apparent problem with this car-.
: the contact stated while driving 45 mph a loud noise was heard from the vehicle and the engine stalled. Smoke and fire erupted from under the hood and the vehicle was pushed off to the side of the road. The fire was extinguished; however there were no fire or police reports filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop, upon inspection a rod had blown through the engine causing oil splatter which caused the smoke and fire. The manufacturer was not alerted.
: the contact stated while driving 50 mph a loud noise was heard coming from the engine. The vehicle slowed and another loud noise was heard. It was pulled off the road without incident. The engine restarted; however the vehicle would not go into reverse and would only operate at 10 mph. It was towed to an independent repair shop where the transmission was replaced. One month later while approaching a stop, the vehicle vibrated and the engine overheated and failed. The vehicle was towed back to the independent repair shop where the engine was rebuilt. The manufacturer has not been alerted.
Backing out of driveway my 01 Dodge Intrepid made an awful noise and quit after being towed to the dealership we are told the timing chain broke and we would have to have another engine. . . . $6,000 - $8,000,just for the engine from Chrysler while still making payments on the car I am currently in search of a replacement engine that doesn't cost more than the car is worth.
I drive a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. My car has 80,000 miles on it and has always been in good condition. I have a maintenance track record proving that I keep my oil changes and tuneups, etc up to date. On December 20th my car was hit and the persons at faults insurance company (progressive) agreed to fix it. On January 9th I was told that my car was repaired and ready for pickup. As I was driving home my car made this loud sound so I immediately called progressive to have them tow it because I didnt feel safe driving it and it never done anything like that before. Progressive took it to champion Chrysler to assess it I was told that my cars engine locked up while being tested by champion Chrysler. So this means that progressive had my car in their pocession for over a month and now my engines locked up and stuck at champion. Progressive says I did not maintain my car and they will not fix it because it was not their fault. I since then went to jiffy lube and got a print out and it shows I did keep my oils changes regularly and the car was in good shape. I have replaced the brakes, tires, power steering system. Over all it was considered to be in good condition. Now I am stuck champion wants $6,000 that I do not have and I do not feel I am liable for. My cars not fixed and I have no car to drive. I have a job, children that have to get to school and this has been a huge in convenience. I would like to know what am I supposed to do. Is this a car malfunction or who should be fixing my car?.
While driving my car home from work it started making a loud noise, once I got it home into the drive it stopped running. Had I been on the highway this could have caused an accident but lucky for me I don't live more than 5 miles from where I work. I had it towed to a mechanic where they said that the is sludge build up and that the timing chain had broken which had blown up the engine. They mechanic said this is a common occurrence with these cars and I paid him $2,000 down to start working on the car. My fiend suggested that I contact the Chrysler company and I opened a complaint with them. They said I needed to have the work done by one of their certified mechanics, I told him that I had already started the work at another company. They refuse to help with any of the costs unless I have the car towed to one of their companies where I would have to pay the original mechanic over a $1,000 to replace the old engine and cancel the order of the new one. I had called the dealership prior to all of this and because the car's warranty had expired they offered no help.
The contact stated vehicle, started to shake and make terrible noises. She pulled over to the side of the road, and the vehicle was towed to the contact's home. The contact was told the engine needed to be replaced. Repairs will be made at the contact's expense.

Bought my 1998 Dodge Intrepid in November of 2004. I did a routine oil check every 3000 miles. The one time I don't get it changed at 3,000 miles with it only being over by 700 miles my engine blows. I've drove many cars and I didn't get the oil changed at exactly 3000 miles. I was driving with my two little girls. I came to a stop at a stop light and it the oil and check engine light comes on with my engine making a very loud noise and my car shaking. I managed to get it into a parking lot I sat there for an hour waiting for someone to help. Just to find out its a blown engine and its going to cost me over four thousand dollars to replace. My car has 117000 miles on it. I'm unable to afford to fix it and I have heard of many problems with the 2. 6 l. Why is there nothing being done about them or a recall especially with as many people having problems with them. I have no transportation now with two little girls working and going to college someone needs to do something about this.
I purchased a 1998 Intrepid (v6 2. 7l) in Feb. Of 2005. In oct. 2005 while driving, the vehicle began to make a loud noise coming from the engine. I parked the car immediately. The next day as a preventative measure, I had an unscheduled oil change done. Within one week, the engine began to knock and the motor was blown. I have priced repairs, and just a used engine alone is $2000 to $3500.
I was driving my 99 Dodge Intrepid to work and I was making in the left turn lane as the traffic cleared I began to make my left turn. Then all of a sudden, I hear the engine make a terrible sound and the car stopped. I shifted it into neutral and tried to restart to no avail. At that point I had to get out of my car in the middle of the intersection and push it out of the intersection. A couple of guys helped me push it into a 7-11 where I called a tow truck. My mechanic said that the engine needed to be replaced due to sludge. I only purchased this car 3 days prior with the insurance money from when my family was involved in a rollover accident. (we were struck from behind by a an unconscious driver traveling over 100 mph. Causing our aerostar to roll and flip with 5 of us in the car including our 18 month old) I got quotes on a new engine and realized that I am not in the financial situation to fix it. So it's been sitting in my garage until I found an article on aol which led me to this site. The engine manufacturer that I spoke with said that there was a problem with the standard Chrysler motor and that they made the oil return larger to eliminate the sludge problem. I don't understand how a car engine that dies while driving is allowed to go unresolved. I could've been seriously injured sitting in oncoming traffic. I was lucky but since this is a known problem (I didn't know prior to buying the car otherwise I wouldn't have risked my life driving it).
While driving my Dodge interpid (that has a 2. 7 liter engine) the engine started making a horrible noise. We could not accelerate over 25 mph and the engine wouldn't stay running if you hit the brake at all. While turning a corner into traffic, the engine died. After about 15 minutes of the noise beginning, the engine light came on. There was no warning sign that anything was wrong prior to it happening. We had it towed to a mechanic's garage and were told it needs a whole new engine and it would cost 5,800. 00. The mechanic said this is a known major problem with this engine and the problem usually starts between 50-60k miles. (mine had approximately 56,000 miles on it at the time the problem started. I also called a Chrysler mechanic and was told the same exact thing about the problem with this engine.
: the contact stated the check oil light illuminated while driving. Although the vehicle was regularly maintained the contact took the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer added more oil. Afterwards, the contact was driving home and the check oil light illuminated again followed by a loud noise from the engine compartment. The engine stalled and would not restart. The vehicle was towed to a different dealer. The service department discovered sludge in the engine. The engine was replaced in March 2003. After a recent oil change the service department of a local dealership noted there was some sludge present.
Our 2001 Dodge Intrepid with a v6 2. 7 ltr engine begin to make extremely loud noises, coming from the engine. We managed to drive it at low speed for about 5 miles, since it seemed to have no power, to our local Dodge dealership. We were told the next day the engine was blown and needed replaced at a cost of approximately $6000 plus PA taxes. We have not yet made a decision as to what to do. We contacted Chrysler through its 800 customer service number. They have refused to help in any way, citing lack of service records before our purchase of the car as a used vehicle on October 16, 2004. We indicated that lack of service records do not indicate the car was not serviced since not all owners use the Dodge and Chrysler dealerships for service. We called customer service twice and had the same response twice. We are now faced with deciding what to do with the car. We had since learned that engine failure is a problem in these cars and that Chrysler has basically told its customers to go "pound sand". We also are the original owners of a 1997 Dodge grand caravan and thought that our good experience with it and service record with the local Dodge dealership where we purchased it might help in getting Chrysler to help us. The Intrepid had been towed to the same dealership only five days earlier on April 14, 2005. The next day the dealer replaced the camshaft and crankshaft sensors with no indication to us that there was anything else wrong with the car. Prior to this, since the Intrepid's purchase in October 2004, we had two incidents where the oil light came on at a stop sign or red light. Both times, this problem was fixed by our local Dodge dealership with no indication that there was any other or possible further problem. We only put 3110 miles on the car. We are angry and feel helpless as we search the internet and see where Chrysler is refusing to acknowledge or fix this problem in its vehicles.
The motor is making extreme noises and I am sure it is ready to fail. I have always changed the oil in the recommended mileages. I am afraid it will lock up on me, and the majority of my driving is highway.
The vehicle was traveling at 70 mph when all of sudden the driver heard a loud noise and unexpectedly the engine cut off and failed. Manufacturer has been contacted by consumer.
Consumer heard a loud noise coming from the engine before it eventually stalled. Took vehicle to dealer for check up, and results showed that the vehicle needed a new engine. . . . .
12/11/04 = engine failure on a 2001 Dodge Intrepid while driving on I-77 north of charlotte, nc. Oil light flickered on and off. Pulled over to shoulder to check oil level and fouond at max. Continued driving and about 30 miles later eigine rpm acclerated to 5000 rpm at 70 mph. Engine cut off and had to pull to medium. Loud noise in engine. Mount airy Dodge deler wanted 3k to 5k to replace. 12/17/04 = towed car back to shelby and having motor replaced with a used motor at a cost of $4000. 00 (estimated).
