Oil light and check engine light are coming on. Took it to a mechanic to get it inspected he said it is loosing oil pressure due to oil pump failure there is no way to tell when or if the engine will seize up, but that it could be while driving on the interstate. Some research showed that this is a major issue with the 2. 7l v6 in the Dodge Intrepid. This is a major safety issue.

I was driving down hwy i75 south bound coming home from work in the middle of rush hr traffic. My car was at 70 mph and was doing great, then it just stopped running with no warning, didn't get hot, nothing just done in one minute, mechanics said I needed a complete rebuild. Crank - cam - oil pump showed scars and metal fragments. Costs of 3500 in parts and machine time, 600 in labor. We couldn't get over fast enough to get off the rd and was able to stop traffic and then push it off to the side, later when picking up the car with a tow dolly was hit by a car, side swiping my other vehicle and leaving me an additional 3000 in repairs.

Driving back from the store and the car started jerking back and forth and then just stopped. Called for a tow. The mechanic said the oil pump stopped and by the sound that the car was making that it had lost a connecting rod bearing. But couldn't be sure without ripping the motor apart.

July 31 2007 traveling at 65 mph on a major highway (75) in tulsa okla the motor in our 2003 Dodge Intrepid, a 2. 7 v 6 shut down. No indications of any kind of problem. (no low oil pressure light, no high temp. , no noise indicating a problem. The motor just died and my wife had trouble even getting it off the road and out of traffic without having an accident. I had to have the car towed to a dealer,(east tulsa Dodge where they examined the car and told me the motor was damaged and had to be replaced. The car has 83,941 miles on it. I called the factory rep and they refused to cover any of the expenses saying we did not maintain the vehicle to their specifications. The oil in the car is less than 40 days old and any sludge that the old oil had in it should have been removed as this oil was removed from the oil pan. It is not normal maintenance to have to remove the oil pan and wipe out the sludge build-up or remove the cover on the top of the motor to wipe out the sludge build-up. This is a problem caused from poor design of the oil pump and the oil pick up tubes being to small for the job required to keep enough oil flowing through the motor to protect engine parts from this kind of damage.

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. He stated that the oil pump caused all of the components associated with it to fail. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but the failure remained. The failure initially began approximately four months ago and occurred while driving 45 mph. The current mileage is 68,000, and failure mileage was 51,000.
Purchased a 2001 Dodge Intrepid se in oct. 2006 from used car dealer. On Dec. 29,2006 car began to make gurgling noise coming from the engine. Has 119,200 miles on car. Took car to mechanic and he said he had just finish engine repairs on a 1998 and 2000 Dodge Intrepid with the same problem. Need to change oil pump, oil pan, lifters and gaskets. Looking at $500 to $1000 for repairs plus $60 to put it on the diagnostic machine. Only paid $2500 for car. This is my only means of transportation to work and school. If I had known that this car was so jacked up I would not have bought it. There should be someone filing a class action lawsuit against the car manufacturer. Sign me up!!!.
My 2000 Dodge Intrepid with a 2. 7 liter engine has failed due to engine sludge. The sludge caused my timing chain tension device to fail as well as my oil pump rendering my vehicle inoperable. As a consequence, the vehicle will towed to a salvage yard with only 34,000 miles.
Engine sludge oil pump.
Engine is bad. Loud knocking. Originally thought it was main seal that went out but upon further investigation and several mechanics, the engine is gone. Second thought was the oil pump went bad, no luck there either. No known reason for engine to go out and no warning signs. No "check engine" lights or anything else. Car has less than 52,500 miles. Up to this I never had any problems with the vehicle, other than the weather stripping around all four doors keep coming off, even after it was replaced at dealership.
The engine failed after only 75000 miles. I had just had the the timing chain, oil pump replaced and the engine flushed for oil sludge in the engine a few months before. I have not had the engine replaced yet because it is too expensive to replace.
: the contact stated while driving on a paved road the check oil light illuminated. While the vehicle was idling, the temperature increased. Upon inspection the independent repair shop determined the oil pressure had dropped. The oil pump was replaced at a later date. After six months the check oil light illuminated again. The vehicle has not been inspected. Updated 3/3/2006 -.
The oil light flickers when I slow down, and when I am at idle at a light, the oil light comes on and only goes away when I accelerate. I am concerned that the bearings and/or oil pump need replacing before any more significant damage starts with the engine. I have called auto shops and no one gives me a straight answer on what it is. All I know is that repairs are very expensive. This is horrible, its only a 2002!.
Engine began making a tapping noise. Took vehicle to dealer and was told that motor was full of sludge and would have to be replaced and that Chrysler extended warranty would not cover the repair. Had vehicle repaired by an independent auto repair shop - replaced timing chain, tensioner, oil pump. Cost of repair approx. $2450. Old parts are not available.
Defect in motor design, motors self destruction at 90000 mi or less. Son was driving car on interstate, tried to pass truck, motor blew, narrowly missed causing an accident. After numerous phone calls to repair shops I've been told these 2. 7 liter v6 motors are junk. They have a defect with the oil pump. When you accelerate the oil t is pumped to the top of the motor, making the oil pump run dry and starve the main bearing on the lower end. This should have been a recall on all 2. 7 liter v6 motors. I just bought the car for my son, he only had it 2 weeks. I paid cash $5,500. 00. Gone, car not worth repairing. What a rip off.
While driving 55 mph engine failed. Dealer stated the oil pump clogged.
Engine failue in Dodge Intrepid 1999 due to sluge build up in engine. Due to design failure of oil pump.
2000 Dodge Intrepid, oil sludge build up caused engine to blow. The consumer believed the oil sludge problem was because the tube going out of the oil pump twist and turns up and down sp that the oil doesn't pump through as well as it should.
On our way back from a small vacation on June 6, 2004 the oil light of my 1999 Dodge Intrepid came on. We (my husband ,myself and our 2 small children) pulled off the highway to the side of the road and our car quit. We checked the oil (which was full) and we tried to start the engine but it would not start. We then proceeded to call our aaa number and waited for a towtruck. When we contacted the garage the next day to see what the problem was, they told us that our oil pump malfunctioned which in turn led to the engine failure. We were told that our engine was not salvageable and that we would need to replace it. Up until this point we thought we had just had some incredibly bad luck, but then we started looking around for a used engine and found it extremely difficult. We talked to several mechanics that were very aware of a common problem of the Dodge 1999, 2. 7 oil pumps failure. We found this very interesting. We found it even more interesting when we called the Dodge company and were told that they were unaware of any problems with oil pump failure in the slightly older models but yet we have had no luck finding a replacement engine . We were told that we may have a newer stratus engine on the way but are still unsure of that. So basically we now have a car that has a $4000 problem that we are having a terrible time finding a cure for. Granted my car had 71,000 miles on it but in this day in age I would expect a car to last a little longer than that. And even it it didn't ,I would certainly like to be able to find a replacement for the problem and not be told "good luck!" or "man, not another one!" by mechanics that are certainly aware of this common problem even though the Dodge company is not, or so they say. We were totally unaware of this problem until it was too late and will end up costing us approximately $4000. At this point we our still without our vehicle and still have not secured a replacement engine.
While driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled. The dealer stated that the oil pump cracked which allowed metal debris inside the engine.
I own a 200 Dodge Intrepid that has been in the shop since March 28, 2004. The initial diagnosis was sludge in the engine (cylinder head, tensioner to the timing chain) the warranty company refused to pay. I agreed to the 1500 repair. After the repair then they say the oil pump is broke and the warranty company pays for that. After that is replaced they call and state that the valves are bent. After six weeks, the service manager states that he told the warranty company that he recommended that the engine be replaced. I was never told about an engine replacement until then and I let the service manager know that at this point I feel that they did not know what they were doing and that I would have removed my car from the shop. Well my car is still at ewald automotive this day I brought a replacement car at an auction on may 8, 2004. My son has talked with the general manager who stated that he was not aware of the problem. Although nice, he has not done anything to remedy this dilemma. I have since done research on the net and have found a lot of the same story with the car. I did email Chrysler on the onset of this problem asking why no warning. The response from them was that the car was not equipped to give me a warning.
While driving the consumer heard a loud noise which came from the engine. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who indicated that the oil pump failed and engine needed to be replaced.

My 1998 Dodge Intrepid has had problems from the moment I bought the car. It first started with engine problems and had to have a crank shaft put in the car just so that it would run. I have tried so many times to get rid of the car but I can't because I am upside down in my loan and no one will give me a dime for the car. Ever since the first engine problem I have had numerous problems since then. The oil pump went out and I have to change the oil in the car every 2000 miles because it drinks oil so badly. And from every dealership that my mechanic has had to order parts from they say the engines in those cars a so bad. This is the 2nd engine my car has had and it has also had 1 crank shaft. I have 4 children and can't afford to get another car and I can't trade it in. Is there anything you can do.

No real events leading. It just stopped. Fine at red light. Then when pulled out I heard ticking noice. I pulled into very next off road approx 1 block. Vhenever ran again. Mech advised oil pump. Engine blew up. $7000 to repair. Mech advised Chrysler has known this problem since day one. Chrysler refused to help. I am now paying the balance of a $8000 loan on a car I can not drive and had to buy another one. I work and drive the atlanta roads. When your vehicle stops in these roads. You are risking your life.
Oil sludge in 2000 Dodge Intrepid with 3. 2 6 cyl engine. Noted noisy valve in left cylinder head. During inspection of valve train found rocker arm shaft filled with sludge blocking oil passage to rocker arms. Right valve trained also had a large amount of sludge in rocker arm shaft. Cleaned shaft and inspected valve train for excessive wear. Valve train wear still within limits as prescribed by Chrysler/Dodge. Inspected oil pan and noted a large amount of sludge in the pan. Further inspections revealed oil pick up tube 90% blocked, and the oil pump housing scored from damaged gear out of the factory. Replaced oil pump assembly, pick up tube, crankshaft bearings, and connecting rod bearings. This defect was caught and corrected before any severe damage to the engine occurred. Had it not, result would be an engine locked up due to lack of lubrication. This car is maintained regularly, with frequent oil changes, and has highway mileage on it. Dodge denies any oil nitration/sludge problem on the 3. 2 engine. Noted several reports of the same problem from several owners.
While driving my 1998 Dodge Intrepid, my oil light came on and approx. Fifteen minutes later my car stopped in the middle of the road during rush hour. Because the car would not start, I called the police to have them stop traffic so I could cruise my car backwards into the emergency lane. I had the car towed to a mechanic to fix what I thought was a bad starter or alternator. The mechanic determined that the engine had seized up and that I had plently of oil and antifreeze. He said that the oil pump located inside the engine may have stopped working and therefore caused my engine to lock up.
The engine system light appeared on the dashboard, and the engine jerked. The vehicle was taken to the mechanic, who stated the oil pump blew out, therefore the engine died. Dealer stated since consumer didn't purchase an extended warranty, they weren't going to cover a new engine. . Also the air condition made a strange noise.
Engine is blown and only has 62,000 miles. Oil changes were kept up and oil levels were normal. Engine just went with no warning. After talking to many machanincs this seem to be public knowledge. Except the dealer forgot to tell us of the history this engine has. The remanufactured engine are redone with proper oil pump, bearings and chain tensioners, this is a manufactures rebuilt engine. However they will not help us. We are paying for a car that we can not drive. Please help. D. P.
Consumer states that the engine seized up while driving. Vehicle was checked by dlr who advised that the oil pump failed to provide proper oil lubricant to the engine, causing it to seize. Nlm.
