I bought this car from a dealership a year ago, and kept up with maintenance. Two days after purchasing the car the engine died and I had to have it towed back to the dealership, the mechanic there told me that there were burnt wires in the engine that had to be replaced. A month later, there was a leak in the coolant system, so I had it taken to a mechanic who replaced the entire coolant system, put in a new radiator because there was a small crack, as well as installed a brand new battery. About a month after that incident, as I was driving home from work, which is only 11 miles at 35mph, the engine seized. None of the indicator lights went on. Two different mechanics told me that I need a new engine. It is a 2. 7l v6. I still owe $4,000 on the car and so far it cost me $6,000 to keep it running.

Was traveling on the highway when the car began steaming, pulled over and all the radiator fluid was pouring out of the car. Turns out the water pump went out. The pump is incorporated into the motor requiring the motor to be unbolted, turned up, the radiator, valve cover, thermostat, water pump, timing chain and more to be removed. Cost was nearly $850 due to the extreme amount of labor involved and the fact Dodge only parts have to be used. Mechanic informed me, at that time that the 2. 7 liter engine was a very poor design and often give out completely before the car has 100,000 miles on it and Dodge is well aware of the problem. Found a lawsuit filed against Dodge for this defective engine in new jersey.
The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. While driving approximately 60 mph, smoke emitted from under the hood. The contact drove to an independent auto shop and noticed that the engine had overheated and immediately dispensed water into the radiator reservoir. In addition, the radiator hose fractured. There were no prior warnings. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 172,533.

2001 Dodge Intrepid r/t 3. 5l with 111,422 miles. While driving on the tollway, the heater began to blow out cool air. Later there was no acceleration and the car just died. Got the car to the side of the road while in traffic. Had to be towed. Engine is locked up. New engine estimate $5000-$7500. No check engine lights or warnings. Prior to this event we had a new radiator, thermostat, etc. Put in along with fixing oil leakage problem. That was July 28, 2011 with 107,809 miles on it. We always changed our oil regularly and took care of it. We bought this 2001 r/t Intrepid new. The only other real problem was @ 106,939 miles it wouldn't go back into drive once you put it in reverse so we put in a used control module to fix that problem. I have read about a lot of complaints with the 2. 7l engine but can't find much information on the 3. 5 r/t model. So scary to think how many 2001 Intrepids are just dying on the road with no advance notice. Very dangerous. I am so glad that my son was driving it and knew what to do instead of my newly-licensed daughter. It was her car for only 4 1/2 months. Dodge should be ashamed. We got more mileage out of a chevy cavalier. Are there any class action law suits out there?.

2001 Dodge Intrepid se - 2. 7l, lost power on the way to work. Oil light began flickering (had scheduled oil change couple of days before) and coasted off the roadway. Had car towed in to the local repair shop. Diagnosed "catastrophic internal engine failure. " motor needed to be replaced. All past repair work had been completed by the local Dodge dealer. They have replaced two of the main brains in the car (@ 40k & 55k - both cost $850 ea. ), oil pan gaskets (@ 35k, 45k, & 60k), generator (@ 60k), radiator (@ 65k), transmission radiator (@ 65k), rebuilt transmission (@ 98k), and now the motor has been replaced with a jasper rebuild.
2002 Dodge Intrepid thermostat radiator cap stopped working and I got that fixed and we were test driving the car and it worked fine, for a bit. As we were driving the car started shaking and then the engine blew. It stopped working in the middle of December 2008. We need to buy a new engine. It was sudden, and we took the car to get the oil change and the entire vehicle checked every 3 months.
I bought a Dodge Intrepid in April 08. It had 53,000 miles, in great condition and spotless carfax. The car started making problems at 57000 miles. It overheated, so we got the radiator fixed which solved my problem for a week or so. After that week, while driving on the long island expressway my engine quit on me, and started steaming when trying to turn it back on. There was no warning of that happening whatsoever. No lights on, no engine overheating, nothing. I had to get the car towed to a mechanic, who told me the engine was broken beyond repair, and we donated the car.

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 35 mph, the vehicle shut down without warning. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop. The mechanic discovered fluid leaking from the radiator. As a result, the engine oil thickened and caused the engine to fail. The manufacturer took a report and stated that the vehicle was out of warranty and would not assist. A new engine would cost $9,000. The vehicle will not be repaired. The current and failure mileages were 112,000. Updated 11/07/08.
Repeated overheating problems resulted in replacing my radiator two times, thermostat three times and thermostat w/ breather housing two times. Cooling system includes external metal pipes which help circulate coolant to heater. The pipes are hidden from clear view and when mine sprung leaks due to their placement the leaks were diagnosed as being blown head/head gasket by three separate shops. Replacement of pipes solved overheating. Moisture gets trapped in and around the frame and subframe areas where the motor and transmission mounts are located and allows for unnecessary premature deterioration of all the mounts, bushings, main frame and subframe. This hidden condition has resulted in all mounts needing replacement, transmission dropping, front inner&outer tie rods and bushings going out, rack n pinion problems and the subframe collapsing. Documented records show that from 2004 through 2008 on average I drove 7000 miles a year. In that 28000 miles I replaced all motor/transmission mounts, all 4 inner&outer tie rod bushings/ends twice, radiator twice, thermostat housing twice, coolant pipes once and have gone through two sets of tires. I am replacing subframe, transmission mounts and front axle again. I continue fixing the car because I cannot afford to replace it but I am getting very concerned about the steering, axle or brakes giving out while driving on the highway or in heavier traffic. So concerned my documentation has been given to family members in case of fatality resulting from the defects mentioned.

I had a Dodge Intrepid that has had nothing but problems with the engine. When I went online to do research I found out that there were many other complaints, the same as I had. I want to know why no-one has done anything in regards to this problem. I actually had a part person at fireside Dodge in modesto tell me that a part I was buying was a known defect part and that is why they changed it but they weren't putting out a notice until they were forced to because it was expensive,
I put the latest incident as the date but this is the third tragic incident with this engine. The first incident was when I had to have all my rods replaced in the engine because of a sludge build-up in the engine. The second incident was when a part connected to my radiator blew off and I had to replace that. Now, this third incident and I still not have a diagnosis on what is wrong but it is leaning to the heads, head gasket, and piston rings. Please look at these website and start an investigation into Dodge about this engine. It is not fair that honest, hard working people have to deal with faulty engineering. I am lucky that no one has been hurt on any time my car has broken down because all three times I was on a major freeway, once coming home from stockton on highway 99 the other two happened when I was over 2 hours from home and I had to pay a $575. 00 tow truck fee each time to get my car home. . I bought my 2000 Dodge Intrepid in October of 2000. Within 2 years I had the inner tie rods and weather stripping/door trim replaced. Whenever I would take my car in for an oil change every 3000 miles, the mechanic would notify me of sludge build up. Now the engine is gone. Beyond repair with only 94,000 mile left on the car. This was just after I paid to replace an evaporator coil that was leaking and the inner tie rods for the second time. I also paid over $200 to replace the weather stripping for the second time. I have replaced a radiator that was leaking and a shift cable that had seized up preventing my car from shifting into gear. I figure those were due to normal wear and tear but the engine is what really blows my mind with such low miles and regular maintanence. Please help.
The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. The hose from the radiator lifts up and connects with the hose from the heater, which caused the motor to fail while driving 35 mph. The vehicle was towed to the contacts home and he repaired the part that separates the water that travels from the radiator to the heater. The water pump has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 94,500. *updated 12/12/07 updated 12/12/07.
The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 65 mph, the contact noticed smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle and steam underneath the hood. The vehicle was towed to her residence. The mechanic stated that the coolant air bleeder for the radiator became detached. A mechanic at Dodge inspected the part and stated that it was defective. The current and failure mileages were 101,000.
2000 Dodge Intrepid, car has 2 new engines seize up, car will not start all the time, or just stop while driving regardless of new plugs, batteries.
Car exhibiting all symptoms that engine will fail--oil light comes on at stop lights, ac broken, radiator filled with sludge. I have a six year old daughter and will not our lives at stake driving a car that could potentially leave us stranded in the middle of rush hour traffic. Dodge refuses to even acknowledge these cars have oil sludge problems.
I was driving neighbor and grandson down interstate to destination 25 miles. Away. Approximately 20 miles into trip began to feel car pulling back as I tried to maintain highway speed of 60 mph. Car stalled as I exited interstate and every time I had to stop. Made it to destination and car completely shut down as I pulled in. Checked oil and radiator, oil down x1qt. Barely made it home, after resting car approx. 15 minutes using emergency lights the entire way home. Stalled 10 times after I exited interstate. Took to reputable mechanic, had to drive slow because car refused to accelerate. Found out timing chain broke, estimate $1,500. 00 to repair. Received call 2 days later, engine shot due to piston and possible risk pin damage done to cylinders. It would cost much more money to diagnose exactly due to fact engine needed to be torn down. We bought car from individual in 2002, currently has only 93,000 miles sounds like Chrysler owes many people a great deal of money! will never buy Chrysler or Dodge car again.
: the contact stated that the transmission, radiator, oil thinning unit, and harmonic balancer have all been replaced. There was concern expressed that this should not be normal wear and tear even though the vehicle has 69000 miles on it.
: the contact stated while driving 55 mph the engine sputtered and then stalled. The vehicle coasted off the road and restarted for just a few seconds when the engine seized. It was towed to an independent repair shop where it was determined the water from the radiator was in the engine. There was water in the oil, which caused the engine to seize. The manufacturer was alerted.
I am a owner of a 2001 Dodge Intrepid se. Last Sunday morning my wife got up to go to work, after which she was going to travel to maine with our two boys. Because she was traveling I walked out with her and popped the hood to check all the fluids, coolant, oil ect. . Eveything appeared to be normal. On her way up to maine she broke down. While she was driving all of a sudden in a matter of less than 30 seconds the car started to vibrate and the car completly turned off. After losing power steering, breaking ability, she some how mange to turn the car off the highway. She states that nothing on her gages read abnormal. By the time the tow truck got there all the fluids were pouring out of the car and smoke seemed to be coming from everywhere even under the oil cap. The next day the Dodge service center called us and said the engine seized, blown head gasket, radiator was gone. It was going to cost us between 7,000. 00-5,000. 00 dollars. We have contacted chrylser but seem to get thr run-around. How can a 2001 automobile's engine ( with moderate mileage just ) fail with no warning???? all of the gages read normal and we checked under the hood that morning ,not to mention put my wife and children in danger.
Well, I have had nothing but problems with this car since I have had it. First it was little things like the window only going up or down when it felt like it, the oil light flashing on and off for no reason, the driver seat reclining for no reason, all the weather stripping coming off of the doors. Now my whole engine is shot and I believe it is because of defective parts. I was driving on the freeway the other day when all of the sudden my car was making a noise any time I tried to accelerate. I checked all my gages and everything looked ok, so I turned off my cruise control thinking maybe that was the problem. Someone drove past me and motioned there was a problem, so I stopped and my whole car filled with smoke. I lifted my hood and there was a piece that goes on top of my radiator that was off and steam and water and coolant was everywhere. I had just checked the water before I had left, and my temperature gauge never moved from its usual spot so it was odd that my car would overheat. The tow truck came and said that 2 days before he had the same exact car same exact thing happened. The piece that is on top of the radiator is something that probably should be bolted down, but is actually glued on with a rubber sealant. Once that rubber got so hot, it seems that it melted and came off and with all the pressure the radiator blew and now I have a blown head gasget among other engin damage. The 1st estimate I have gotten is 2,500 which is outrageous, especially since it could have been prevented if they had just used a bold and not rubber glue on a hot radiator.
Driving on the (very busy)freeway in pheonix, az, we started hearing very quiet clicking noise in my '01 Dodge Intrepid. We rolled down the windows, heard louder clicking, and started losing power. We made it to the next exit, and the car died not half way down the onramp. We did steer it to the side, and avoided an accident. There was a small piece on the rear of the radiator, front of the engine that had lifted off. There was a gasket, but no screws, clamps, or other securing devices. This apparently houses the thermostat. The engine was destroyed, without the gauges ever registering a heat up, and we were left on an off ramp with no motor, and almost no warning. The dealership wanted $8k for a new engine, and claims that it was destroyed because of slushing, as a result of infrequent oil changes. It has 90k miles on it, and we still owe $13000 on it.
Dt: the consumer owns a 1998 Dodge Intrepid. The consumer states that she took her vehicle to a dealer and had a new radiator put in and on the way home the engine seized and it never started again. The dealer said that she would have to have a new engine put in the vehicle.
While driving and upon turning the vehicle off it was fine. When trying to start the vehicle again it will not start. When driving and trying to accelerate vehicle will not accelerate. Also, it is using lots of fuel. Contacted the dealer, and was told the vehicle was not repairable. Consumer have 3 isolated problems, made several attempts to fix these problems. First problem once vehicle warm up completely it is difficuit to restart. Recent problem has been an unrepairable exhaust problem. Have had 3 different repair shops tell consumer they can't fix it. Final issue is radiator flush that can't service. The repair shops can't get the damp off. These are all original parts.
Vehicle is leaking coolant due to a crackin the radiator. Contacted dealer, and dealer is not willing to do anything.
The failure of my air conditioning system. Observed smoke coming out of the vents. Turned air conditioning system offbriefly. When I turned the system on again it no longer worked. The system was putting out warm air. I take it to be repaired and it only worked a few days. The result is no air condition system, inoperative. I have put spent so much money to get the system fixed.
Vehicle is leaking coolant from the release valve located behind the radiator. Please send in further information.
I believe my 1998 Dodge Intrepid ES was a lemon when I brought it, I've had nothing but problems with it, overheating, stalling, stopping.
Was driving vehicle when it started to lose power for no reason. It failed to go over 30mph. Took it to a private mechanic & was informed a drum broke off in transmission. Part holding drum had sheared off. Transmission needed complete overhaul. Also, had rear tie rods replaced/thermostat was replaced twice for overheating, and 02 sensors replaced twice due to engine check light coming on.

The thermostat housing is plastic and has a brass tube running through it which leaks antifreeze, the part has been redesigned but Chrysler refuses to fix consumers vehicle because the vehicle is no longer covered under warranty. Nlm.
When antifreeze was poured into the reservoir, it leaked out of the radiator which caused the vehicle to overheat. Please provide further details.
While driving, steering locked. Could not turn wheel left or right. Took to mechanic to change rack and pinion. Dealer contacted. A worn belt was replaced but did not remedy stalling problem, now radiator leaks. Consumer states that when replacing the air filter, the plastic case that holds the screws instantly breaks. Dealer stated vehicle had a recent front end alignment, however the tires wore in 8000-10000 miles.
When vehicle gets to operating temperaturer radiator fluid back flushes out of the filler jug until there is no more coolant in the system the motor gets hot. I have changed the radiator filler jug cap, checked the hoses, flushed out the radiator and don't know what else to do.
While driving thermostat would come on automatically, without switching it on manually. Please describe details.
