I received a recall notice for a possible differential failure that could cause an accident. I made an appointment at the Dodge dealer in vicksburg michigan. The truck developed a vibration days before the appointment, so I parked it for two days. On the way to the dealership appointment, the vibration worsened and I dared not drive over 45 mph. The dealership informed me that no parts are available to repair my differential. I called the number on my recall notification to talk to a Dodge / Chrysler representative. He informed me that no parts are yet available, and that they could be a week to one year away, as they are searching for some one to manufacture them. The differential plant in detroit was closed shortly after my model year truck. The newer Dodge trucks have differentials manufactured by american axle in mexico. This is so frustrating, I need my truck to drive to work, 30 miles, to american axle in three rivers michigan. I run machines that make differential gears for gm trucks. My truck cannot be repaired or sold at this time. Dodge had no answer on how to get my truck repaired.
At approximately 35 mph my driveline dislodged from my rear differential and locked up the wheels (differential. ). The road was a popular well maintained paved road. Fortunately no cars or pedestrians were close by and speed was relatively low, otherwise this could have ended with serious injury or fatality. In addition to the recent incident with the differential, I have experienced other issues with this ram: -new engine after cracking both heads while driving down the freeway (it gets serviced regularly and doesn't tow often). -idle has sudden surges at a stop. -transmission skipping gears.
Recall p77 my main problem with this is that if the pinion has become loose the gears are not lined up correctly anymore and causes extreme wear on the differential unit and will cause it to lock up. I called the manufacturer regarding this yesterday and they told me to talk to the service manager at my dealership. Today I went in to speak with him. I requested that he check the torque on my pinion nut "I have nobody here that is available to do that today" he stated. I then asked him when he would have somebody in to check it, "maybe Tuesday or Thursday when did you want it checked". "today" I stated. Following that he took down my VIN number went over to the computer came back and told me that there is no remedy for the problem right now and to contact the manufacturer. Which I then advised him that I spoke with them yesterday and they told me to talk to my service manager. He stated that there is nothing he can do to my vehicle without Chrysler providing the proper remedy. If Chrysler does find that the nut is loose are they planning on replacing the ring and pinion since when this item is not properly installed it wears unevenly and can lock up. Chrysler also stated that they cannot verify if I will be reimbursed if I take this to a 3rd party repair shop to have this properly corrected, since the only people that seem to be able to correct this issue is a 3rd party repair shop. I am left with a choice of paying out of pocket for the repair to be assured that I am driving a safe vehicle with no guarantee that I will be compensated for my expenses, waiting for the parts to available and drive a vehicle that may or may not lock up the rear wheels without notice, or having a repair that may not meet your standards since I have not found out what the remedy is if the torque rating is under the specified 200lbs. That is my concern.

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. While driving at 75 mph, the contact heard a noise coming from both rear tires. Upon further inspection, the contact noticed that the rear differential was leaking oil and emitting vapor. The vehicle was towed to a dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v796000 (power train) however, the part needed to repair the vehicle was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,995.
Rear differential locked up causing the truck to spin out and go off the road. I had to put the truck in fwd low to get out of the ditch and drove it a short distance home in fwd high. The rear differential is no longer locked but it is very noisy and can not be driven. When I called Dodge I was told this truck was not part of the massive Ram 1500 recall.
The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the driveshaft separated from the vehicle causing the rear tires to seize. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the rear differential was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 169,000.
The truck started hopping and skipping while driving. After having it looked at the rear differential was full of metal gear teeth and filings.

The rear differential went out at approximately 65 mph. I had it inspected and supposedly fixed in April of 2013 but it did not fix it. The complete rear pinion and wheel bearing gears went out. The service people at lithia Dodge in santa fe said that because it had been inspected in April it was ok. Not the case. All of these models need to be recalled for a complete new rear end. Lives will be lost if this isn't done. Also, Chrysler must take financial responsibility for all repairs associated with this rear end even if it was inspected and approved to be ok. It isn't . I had heard a grinding sound for a few days only when going in reverse. I was on my way to work and all of the sudden a loud bang happened and I stopped the truck and had to have it towed to the dealership. Repairman said that the rear end differential had exploded. Ive only had this truck financed for four months and now they want $4300 to repair.
Operating normally, a grinding noise began and the vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed as a rear differential bearing failure, likely due to the previous recall #NHTSA campaign number: 10v656000 which was done immediately after notification. Significant costs were incurred to repair the differential, axle and bearings. No heavy payloads or towing was done. Maintenance is always done on time and records are available at the dealership. Its seems inconceivable that such a new truck could have a very significant failure.
While traveling around 45mph with children in the car, I noticed a whining noise immediately before I heard the tires chirping as they intermittenly began to lock up. I was able to get to my destination and noticed there was gear lube sprayed all over the underside. The pinion shaft was detached from the rear differential. Truck was completely inoperable, had to be towed by flatbed as rear end was locked. Spent almost $2000 in repairs. Spoke to Dodge 12/21/14 as I'm now reading information that 2005 Dodge rams are being recalled for this exact problem and have been told it is the 2008 model and my truck is "fine". Will be following up with a supervisor.
There was not an accident but could have been. The clips in the differential fall out and could cause axles to lock up which could be very dangerous at speed. When changing my fluid I found these clips in the bottom of the case. This is a very common and dangerous problem. If these clips were to get caught in the ring and pinion gears it would have been scary. Dodge should be recalling these.

On 3/17/2014 safety recall NHTSA 13v-038 was completed on the vehicle by a Chrysler authorized service center. Week of 6/29/14 (on 2 separate road trips) the rear axle seized while vehicle was under motion. On 7/1/2014 vehicle was returned to same service center without further incident. The incident info & safety concerns were relayed to service rep. That afternoon was called by service rep & told (paraphrasing) "it's not doing it now. Come get it. Bring it back if it happens again. " I refuse to pick up vehicle. It remains at service center as they keep trying to get it to do "it". 7/3/2014 I contact Chrysler 800-247-9753 (case #25262149) expressed alarm to "agent" that "recall" did not correct failure or its potential. Agent contacted service provider. Agent returned to me w/response echoing & supportive of service provider. "it's not doing it now. Is there anything else I can do for you?" in frustration I said, "I am speechless. . . Clearly you are at the end of your 'script'. . . " (I was wrong) the Chrysler agent responded "I am not at the end of my script! I can still offer you monetary or tangible compensation!" I said, "for what? you said there is no problem. " (end of conversation) how can such a thing be measured? even more than having my vehicle restored to my confidence and possession, I would especially like to know that the threat of bodily injury or loss of life to anyone (resulting from the Dodge ram differential pinion nut (or not) failure) truly does not exist. Direct experience says it does. I am confident in the integrity of my service center. I do understand that they cannot fix what does not appear to be broken & what the manufacturer denies or doesn't (?) know is a problem. I do not wish to bring any hardship upon the dealer.

Rear differential failed.
The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the contact heard a scraping noise and the abs and brake lights illuminated then the rear brakes seized. And the rear brakes seized. The contact pulled the vehicle over and noticed that the driveshaft became detached and fluid was leaking from the rear differential. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic who stated that the rear differential and driveshaft assembly needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 101,309.
I was leaving work when it happened. I left the driveway and got on the road and once I hit about 35 or so my truck began to seize and popped in the rear. My truck then began to bounce in the back and I had to pull over and get out to see what had happened, and didn't see anything. I was very confused. I started to drive and turn back to the street and it started violently bouncing again so I took it to my mechanic who then helped me figure that the problem was the rear differential. We took it apart and found chunks of metal gears all over the bottom. I had to have it rebuilt for $1800 total. I was very disappointed and confused as to how a rear diff. Could just give out so I looked it up and many others with the same year or close to it had the same problem I had. Some at higher, more dangerous speeds for something that vital to give out. I was shocked to learn about this many people complaining and having the same serious problem with this part that I had and that there has been no recall for it. It shouldn't have to wait for someone to be injured or worse for the problem to be fixed. The truck is barely broken in and I love it which is why I was heartbroken when this happened. I want a recall done to stop this from happening to others and to help those that it's already happened too. I'm very upset this problem is happening to so many and nothing is being done about it. I'm glad I wasn't going at highway speeds like some others that had the same thing happen. I want the whole problem fixed because I heard it has something to do with the driveline as well and if that shatters like the rear diff then I hope I'm as lucky the first time.
The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. While driving 55 mph, a loud noise emitted from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the rear differential needed to be rebuilt. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 139,600.
Shutter and noise from rear end when turning at slow speed usually from stop or slow turn . Have had service done on differential at 15000 mile intervals even though no towing or dusty condition. This does not happen all the time. After reading so many complaints on here about pinion nuts and differential failure thought should I should submit to help start a investigation and recall it seems their is a problem that should be addressed. Whither in part failure or service procedure of differential fluid service.
Upon returning home from a round trip of about 120 miles a large puddle of oil was located in the driveway was noticed under the rear differential of the vehicle. A large metal part had ripped a hole in the differential cover causing the oil to leak out. The metal part was still sticking out of the cover. I brought the vehicle in to a local shop and it was discovered the clip retaining the gears onto the carrier in the differential had come loose and been thrown through the cover, and all the fluid leaked out. The entire differential had to be rebuilt for almost $1,800 at my own expense. Then about a year later Chrysler did a recall on the same issue, but I was told my truck was not included in the recall, with no explanation. This is not acceptable and I expect to be reimbursed for my out of pocket costs, as well as having the recall done to keep from having the same thing happen again.
Our granddaughter's husband was driving the truck. While driving down the road, the truck started shaking. He pulled over and checked for a flat tire and looked under the truck. The tires were fine and he didn't see anything leaking. He started driving again and the truck started shaking again he pulled into a gas station and checked under the truck again for leaks, but nothing was leaking. The engine was running fine so he started driving again. The truck was still shaking and then started humming and making grinding noises. Then the engine stopped running but kept moving as if it were in neutral ( but still in drive). He pulled off the road. He called the closest Chrysler dealer and had it towed there. The technician said the pinion seal had leaked and there was no fluid in rear differential. The truck had a full service check in October and there were no signs of leakage. There were no signs of leakage on the garage floor either. After research, I've read of many others who have had this same problem. After doing everything we should have to care for the truck, we still ended up paying $5940. 75.
The contact owns a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that the vehicle was serviced under NHTSA campaign number: 13v038000 (power train) however, six months after the service the vehicle sustained damage to the rear as the result of the pinion nut becoming loose. The technician diagnosed that the rear differential needed to be rebuilt, which required the differential carrier bearing, pinion bearing and related components to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered to assist with the repair costs. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 62,936 and the current mileage was 69,946.
The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the vehicle came to a complete stop. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where the dealer had to repair the entire rear differential and pinion. The contact did not call the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 79,015.

Driving on freeway truck started making a humming noise was going 65mph, heard loud bang lost power , luckily could pull to the right shoulder between medium and freeway and access road. Looked underneath truck and noticed oil leak underneath differential and gear shaft. Gear shaft was not attached to powertrain. Called my local dealer he gave me the 1800 number for roadside assistance, instructed me to tell the wrecker to take truck to dealer. Since it was late left truck at dealer.
The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that the rear differential made a loud noise when reversing or turning. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 81,000.
Driving down I-10 at speed, when I heard and felt a loud thunk and then multiple impacts from under/behind me. Slowed down to get on the shoulder, then the rear diff locked up and skid the rest of the way to a stop. Looked under truck, found driveline disconnected from differential. Pinion nut appears to have backed off. Nut still in yoke.
The contact owns a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, a popping noise was emitted as the rear wheels seized. The contact noticed that the rear differential became detached from the vehicle and that the bolts were missing. The vehicle was not inspected by the dealer or repaired. The failure was reported to the manufacturer. The failure and current mileage was 120,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign id number: 13v038000 (power train:driveline:differential unit) and contacted the manufacturer but was advised that the parts needed to complete the repair were not yet available. The contact did not state whether the manufacturer was able to provide an estimated time for the arrival of parts. The contact had not experienced a failure.
While driving home from the mayo clinic from a heart dr. Appt. I felt a strange motion in the truck and went to pull over on the interstate when the differential locked up causing the truck to skid to a stop. Had it towed to a Dodge dealer where I could get it repaired . First it was $1700 to put in a junkyard rear, then it was $2350 and $2450 if I wanted a rebuilt . I then received a call it would be another $600 because the brakes locked up with the rear end. The truck was a year past warranty but only had 50000 miles on it. Called Chrysler and they said there was nothing they would do because the garage used napa parts.
