Ford Edge owners have reported 2,184 problems related to engine and engine cooling (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Edge based on all problems reported for the Edge.
Our 2018 Ford Edge started idling rough after spark plug change and after dealer tested it they told us it had engine coolant in #2 cylinder and that driving it could lead to catastrophic engine failure. Only fix is complete engine block replacement (recommended by Ford in bulletin tsb22-2229) along with new turbo as it may also have been damaged by coolant leak. (could also damage catalytic converter. This is a known default due to design fault in 2. 0 litre engine. Since vehicle is off warranty, the repair replacement is going to cost over $10,000. 00. I understand this is affecting a serious number of Ford customers with this engine, a number of which have been quietly replaced under warranty. I feel Ford owes their customers replacement costs on this issue and a recall should be issued. If ones motor seizes up suddenly while driving it could result in injury or death. I have contacted Ford directly, and their response is it's out of warranty so I am out of luck.

Vehicle went in for check engine light, no issues with how the car runs, low coolant. Vehicle was pressure tested and we were told there was a crack in the cylinder and that the engine would need to be completely replaced. This will cost upwards of 10k. Per my research this is a known ticket and huge defect that Ford knows about. We asked if we could get e engine replaced under the goodwill repair program through Ford and we were denied there as well.

The coolant is leaking into the engine area. Causing repeated coil failures and misfire and I assume damage to engine. I believe engine block needs to repaired or replaced. Also, during both dry and especially slippery/wet conditions. . . My vehicle is veering to both sides on its own while driving . My hands are on wheel going straight and it just drifts, slips and slides. Afraid I'm going to crash. No warning lights. Might be esc and or abs systems. It seems these are known issues for this year make and model but these recalls and warnings for some reason are not attached to my VIN. I need them attached to my VIN so that I can take to Ford dealership for repair before these system failures kill me.

Design flaw in engine which causes coolant intrusion into the cylinders causing misfires, overheating, and white smoke out of the exhaust. The vehicle is unsafe to drive due to the engine overheating. The vehicle has been inspected by a licensed mechanic that confirmed all of the above. The engine temperature would overheat and there was white smoke coming out of the exhaust upon starting the vehicle.

Coolant leaking into the cylinders caused engine overheating and ultimately, engine failure.
Coolant leaks into engine. Also leaks into spark plugs causing spark plug misfire. Engine block cracked. Only at 66k miles.
Engine leaking coolant into cylinders. Creating risk of smoke and fire, known issue with for per TSB 19-2208.
The car has been having a chemical smell when it starts. I recently was driving from san antonio, texas to austin, texas and received a warning that my car was overheating. The warning went off immediately and I continued driving it. A few days later, I got an oil change and was told that I had no coolant in the vehicle. They filled the coolant for me. I continued driving the car. This week, the car was shaking pretty violently when I turned on the ignition. I proceeded to drive it and it drove normally. The following day, a check engine light came on. I took it in to see a mechanic that day and they confirmed that I had a coolant intrusion problem caused by the 2. 0l eco boost engine which is defective and allows coolant to escape into the engine injectors. Ford is not taking any responsibility for this and says that it is not under warranty so there's no programs they can offer me. Ford should issue a recall of this defective product to avoid injuries or accidents.

The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and was informed that there was coolant inside the cylinders. The contact was advised that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 65,000.
All lights came on randomly Ford house said it was the torque converter.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, there was a misfire coming from the engine. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the check engine warning light was reset; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic, where several unknown repairs were performed, and the fuel injectors were replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that there was coolant intrusion in the oil and in the engine. The mechanic recommended that the engine be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The manufacturer informed the contact that the repair could not be covered. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.
At 77,000 kilometers, check engine light came on, during inspection it is observed that there is an active coolant intrusion leak in cylinders 1 and 3. This is a Ford Edge 2018, with a 2. 0l ecoboost engine. The car is undriveable and needs a full engine replacement.
Vehicle hesitates while accelerating.
I was having issues with my car starting. Once I got it started a large cloud of white smoke rolled out of the exhaust. As I drove it the overheat warning came on. I took it in to a shop. I was advised that a coolant intrusion into the engine cylinders, particularly with ecoboost engines. This issue stems from a design flaw in the open deck engine block, which can lead to misfires, white smoke, and ultimately engine failure1. Ford issued TSB 22-2229 addressing this issue, my car has 116,102 miles on it. Upon doing some research, there have been thousands of the same model of engines that have been reported as having this issue, yet Ford has not recalled the engine. I am now have to shell out over $10,000 to fix an engine that Ford is aware is defective yet not doing anything about it.
Cylinder misfire, caused coolant intrusion into cylinder caused by defective motor wall. This could have caused by engine to lock up while driving and cause an accident. Luckily I was able to get it to the dealer before that happened. Ford is aware of this defective motor in these models but has refused to issue a recall. My car is a 2018, however, the car only has 50,000 miles on it. I want others to know of this danger. These engines should be recalled before someone is hurt in crash due to this defect.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, the vehicle stalled, with an abnormally strong odor coming from the engine compartment, with the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was able to restart. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with coolant intrusion into the cylinders, causing engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 60,536.
Since the day I bought my 2013 Edge I have had nothing but problems ranging from backup camera always has a distorted image, appears upside down or it will just be blank. For the last year I have had my car looked at, changed everything that could possibly be changed to now my car can be going down the road running 55-60 mph and the car will just shut down and flash random warnings on the dash but the scariest & most unsafe part is how the steering wheel locks up or I lose power steering making it hard to move or coast off the road to safety. At this point I don't know what else to do. Questions below are asking for dates but unfortunately there are so many dates that my car does this as it happens almost daily so I will put date for the last day I drove it. Right now it has been sitting at a mechanic's place for the last 3. 5 weeks.

Water pump failure coolant leaking out of it was driving at 10mph in parking garage when temperature gauge went to hot on cluster instrument everyone was ok had have had vehicle for about a month before breakdown private dealer did say there were no issues car has not been checked by a certified dealership.
2018 Ford Edge with 2. 0 ecoboost engine over heating leaking coolant into cylinders caused engine failure. Lucky this did not catch fire. Ford knows the issue and will not put out a recall. Very dangerous and disgusting business practice.
Check engine light came on. A friend of mine said she saw smoke from my rear exhaust. Ran codes came back as a misfire. Spark plugs; the cold idle had become a little rough. I was driving home from work 2 1/2 weeks ago and had to stop because a warning came across my screen about hot coolant or engine in red with exclamation marks. My daughters boyfriend came out where I stopped and changed my thermostat because one of the hoses was hot and one not showing it was stuck closed. I asked him to do my spark plugs at a later date. I took the car to byerly Ford for a coolant flush because I realized I should have used the same coolant. I asked for spark plugs. They couldn't fit it in that day because I scheduled online. He asked if I could leave it overnight. I couldn't. I was then told it may be this bigger known problem if residue under spark plugs come back. He also asked if I had been topping fluid. I told him no. Last Friday night the bf changed my plugs. Residue under # 3. He asked why my coolant looked brown. He opened the cap and saw the coolant was low but good color and the container was stained. I bought the correct coolant. I called Monday morning to see if I could get it in that day. I was sent to voicemail of who is in charge of engine work. I left a brief message as was requested. I haven't received a call back. Tuesday night (last night) after opening the cap to checking my coolant level and the level rose a bit; my car wouldn't start. I came across TSB#22-2229 which states safety concerns. This includes my cars year, make, model and engine type. I read of a class action lawsuit and recall, but when I look up my vehicles recalls this problem is not listed. I will be calling byerly shortly to discuss me having my car towed up there for definitive diagnosis. My 2016 Edge has 90016. 5 miles. I got new brake pads very recently as well as my the works oil change (no issues)and tires are newish. I have cared for this car with the expectation of twice the milage.
On August 19, 2025, koons woodbridge Ford determined my 2028 Ford Edge requires a long block replacement due to coolant intrusion into cylinder 3, per customer invoice ro# [xxx] tag# [xxx]. This is a known issue, which is documented by technical service bulletin 22-2229. Aimee depugh, koons woodbridge Ford service advisor, informed me that I should contact Ford to request reimbursement. However, the guidance I received was to send the dealership service manager written correspondence requesting the dealership restore the engine at their expense because of the known engine design flaw. I sent the dealership a note via their online portal on August 20, 2025. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
I have a 2018 Ford Edge titanium eco boost with 115,000 miles on it. I bought it used in 2018 with 17,000 miles on it. The engine light came on and I took it to a repair shop. The codes are p0303 and p0316. They inspected the cylinder and there is coolant leaking into cylinder 3. Apparently this is very common for this vehicle and is described as a design flaw. With this problem being very common and a known design flaw from Ford, I strongly encourage a recall.
Common engine failure on the 2. 0l of cylinder cracking allowing coolant to leak into engine and misfire. Engine filled with coolant and wrecked the motor. Ford has done multiple engine swaps costing customers $8,000 for a defective block they changed in the newer years. I feel we should not pay for their mistake!.
The check engine light turned on. It was diagnosed at auto zone as 'cylinder 2 not firing correctly' and the possibility of a bad sparkplug. At the Ford dealership (2 days later), it was diagnosed as a 'coolant intrusion'; leaking coolant into the engine. The engine currently works but the leak will cause engine failure. The Ford dealership service agent told me that this model Edge as well as the escort with the same engine has had this same issue repeatedly. The engine has less than 70,000 miles and is no longer under warranty. Through researching this issue on my own, many people (especially on reddit) have identified the same issue with these Ford cars ranging from 60,000-70,000 miles. The dealership is offering $2,000 check/buy back or a replacement of an engine at a value of $8, 350.
Answers to specific questions above: *head gasket, coolant, engine failure *a running engine/coolant/and head gaskets are valuable to a vehicle to operate *confirmed by an independent service center inspected by manufacturer, police, or insurance. When I got the first notification of a coolant warning, I drove it immediately to the independent service center check engine light came on, then the coolant is low light, to which I then took it in for service I purchased this vehicle in December 2024 from a private party with approximately 56,000 miles on it, which is well within what should be considered reasonable, reliable use for a Ford vehicle. To date, there are approximately 61,000 miles on the vehicle. In August 2025, I was forced to replace the motor due to a head gasket and coolant issues. The work was completed at a reputable local auto shop, auto aces, at a total cost of $6,649. 30. After further research, I discovered there is a current technical service bulletin for this exact make, model, and year, identifying the same issues I experienced. I understand that a TSB is not an official recall; however, it demonstrates that Ford was aware of the defect. I firmly believe Ford bears responsibility for this failure and the financial burden it has caused. Additionally, after only 16 months, the battery inexplicably failed and required replacement. While this was covered under warranty, it further illustrates the unreliability of this vehicle. This expense was not the result of normal wear and tear but of a documented defect that should never have been passed on to consumers.
This car hesitates, engine light indicates misfire. Dealer confirms coolant leaking into the engine. I find out now this is a well known and widespread problem with Ford engines in this era. The car is unsafe to drive due to impending sudden and complete engine failure.
In April of 2025 I got my normal oil change and I mentioned to the technician that the car seems to be jerking more than usual when I start trying to accelerate. They mentioned that the car needed the coolant flushed out and that could be contributing to the issue. I had it done in June. It was not causing the issue but the jerking got worse. So this month, August 2025, I took the care to aamco transmissions and total car care. They did a full systems and diagnostic courtesy check and determined that I need my transmission replaced or rebuilt which is at least $7k. This is a 2021 Ford Edge. I am the only owner. I have 71k miles on the car and never thought that I would have to fully replace a transmission in 4 years.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while at a stoplight, the engine revved high, idled hard, and shook abnormally. There were unknown warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was a known issue, and the failure was related to technical service bulletin: 22-2229. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with coolant intrusion into the engine. The contact was informed that the cylinders were full of coolant. The dealer retrieved dtc: p0302, indicating a misfire in cylinder #2. The mechanic recommended an engine replacement, but the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 116,025.
While driving at highway speeds the engine suddenly began knocking, white smoke billowing from the car and it came to a stop. No lamps prior to failure. Ford is aware that 2017 Ford Edge vehicles were made with this defect. The dealer has confirmed code po304 coolant intrusion into cylinder 4 and also determine that the turbo has failed. Failed turbo is also a known manufacturer defect by Ford. The safety issue is the dramatic loss of speed on the highway without warning while emitting a blinding and distracting smoke screen to other drivers.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the check engine warning light remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local mechanic who diagnosed that there was coolant inside the cylinders. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 148,000.
Engine stated missing when starting. Engine came on and stayed on. Took to Ford certified mechanic and he replaced 4 fuel injectors, received car back and drove for a day then same thing happened again. Took back to mechanic and he found coolant in the engine. He said it was a know. Issue of radiator leaking into engine.
I was doing 65 and had to gun it to get out of someone's way and when I did it just didn't go. There was a long pause then it kicked in just in time.

3 months ago, engine just stopped while driving. Thankfully traffic was light. Had it been one hour later I would have caused an accident on the freeway. Now just last week, the engine was starting rough and the check engine light came on. Brought it in and found out the coolant was intruding into the cylinders. Engine is ruined. Sounds very common for the failure of head gasket causing coolant leak into cylinders.
The engine just stopped and the car wouldn't start before this incident it needed a spark plug a sparkplug box two weeks after this being repaired engine light came on and the Ford Edge just stopped and had no pressure according to the dealer I purchased the Ford Edge from . I payed to have it towed to him and he did not fix it. He said 3,900 for a engine with I only had this Edge for 3 months it had 148. 700 miles and it's 150. 234miles. And and it's the dealer selling defaced cars there are three complaints on his dealership as far as these cars not being in condition to sell because there are major problems they patch up and major recalls on his . Company selling the vehicle has issues a he bandage the issue and I have a car note and the dealer is not willing to come down on the price to have this repaired I believe it's a defect in the engine and he sold the Ford Edge anyway please help me. I'm not able to afford another car I'm [xxx] and a [xxx] I need help plz. And thanks information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Vehicle was taken in for service after the check engine light illuminated. Upon inspection, it was determined that coolant is leaking into the no. 2 cylinder, requiring a complete engine replacement. This is a serious safety concern, as engine failure can occur without warning. The vehicle is a 2018 model with only 51,159 miles, purchased new from the local Ford dealership, and should not be experiencing a major engine failure at such low mileage.
