Driving car and all of a sudden steering locks up, I pulled over shut the vehicle off and looked underneath to see if power steering fluid leaked out, found no visible evidence of a leak , got back in vehicle and started it and steering was fine again, that was about a week ago, this morning I'm driving to work and same thing happens again. When I get to work I go online and notice that the same thing happened to a lot of 2012 Ford Escape owners and that there was a recall for those vehicles made in 2008 to 2011 and assembled in kansas city just like mine was. I called Ford and they told that there is nothing wrong with my vehicle. There are no fault codes or check engine lights coming on.

So today on 12/27/2020 I was house sitiing for a friend and while checking pulling down the street to the house my sensor came on alerting me of a power steering fault and a maintenance light came on. After noticing this I parked the car in my friends driveway finished his requests and headed back to the car. When I entered my car to pull out of the driveway I felt it was extremely difficult to turn the wheel of my car and having troubles steering. At this point I cancelled my other plans and drove the car home and parked it after experiencing extreme difficulty driving the car and trying to turn the vehicle. I after taking it home checked the power steering fluid container to see if it was low to which it was not and checked the pipes to see if the car maybe was leaking for a pipe maybe rupturing which I did not find anything. I found online there was a recall for my vehicle but did the search for the VIN number and found my car never received it in the mail and the car was never serviced for this issue. So I am not really sure what is wrong and hopefully hope I don't need to pay 1600 dollars to fix the power steering hopefully.
Power steering does not engage at start up. . . Second start up it engages. . . When stationary steering wheel twerks . . . No sensor light showing a problem on cluster. . Fluid are good and at level . . . No leaks.
Noticed leak in driveway. Brought to local mechanic. There is much fluid on the rack and pinion steering assembly. Since there is no dipstick, must bring to dealer. Told they have had other complain of same issue. Also leak at transmission. Loose bolts. Do not know if problem is resolved yet must wait 2 weeks for dealer appointment. Afraid all fluid will leak out. Have read this is a complaint of others but no recall.
When I start my car the power steering wont work. I have to shut the car off and restart it and it will work. I noticed my Escape was leaking fluid took it to the Ford dealer it was the transfer case. After 2500. Its fixed and it should be a recall on both as there are numerous complaints on both of these.
My husband and three young children were driving on the interstate from atlanta to miami when the steering instantly became close to impossible to control. With my husbands assistance in pulling the wheel with me we were able to pull to the shoulder. I immediately assumed that there was a leak/or low power steering fluid. After searching the internet on my phone, on the shoulder of the interstate, I learned soon enough that the vehicle actually had power assisted steering and that many people had run into this issue. I was able to restart the car and the steering was fixed, for the moment. Approximately every hour or so the wheel would lock again and while going 70 mph I would have to recrank the car while in neutral to gain back control. The repair cost me $1251. 17 and had me unable to return home for 5 extra days longer than I planned. This could have killed my family had the traffic been heavy or had I needed to drive defensively.
While driving vehicle, noticed that steering wheel was getting harder and harder to turn. After parking vehicle, noticed that steering fluid was leaking onto the ground. This is the 5th repair incident involving this vehicle with the power steering fluid leak. Ford dealer and Ford rep. Claim the problem is fixed each time, but continues to occur every 6-9 months.
