3 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Electric steering pump turns off when steering while driving on highway. The steering angle sensor quits working causing the electric steering pump to turn off. This in turn makes the vehicle hard to steer when driving and may cause a accident.

4 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/05/2018

While taking the kids to school, I was making a left turn across a busy road when, without warning, the vehicle stopped turning, made an alarm sound and seemed to decrease power. I was able to complete the turn just before oncoming traffic arrived at the intersection. As the wheels straightened out, the power steering returned to normal. As I made the next right hand turn, it again cut out in mid-turn and the 'power steering assist fault' message flashed on the dash. During the next left-hand turn, it again cut out mid-turn but this time I was expecting it and had no trouble forcing the vehicle to complete the turn. This time the fault message stayed on and there was no longer any power assist. I drove the vehicle to a parts store expecting it to be a problem with the power steering pump or a low fluid issue only to discover in the owners manual that the power assist is electrical, not hydraulic. I asked the parts store employee to run a scan on the vehicle and when he saw the vehicle/message he told me the scan wouldn't do any good with that issue and it was going to be a very expensive trip to the mechanic. When I turned the vehicle back on, the 'power steering assist fault' message stayed on without any power steering. When I arrived home, I researched the issue and found that there are recalls for 2010 Ford Escapes from the kansas city plant, but a check of the Ford recall database shows no such recall for my specific vehicle. On a vehicle with only 96,823 miles, I would not expect a critical safety component to unexpectedly fail. This vehicle is normally driven by my girlfriend (who actually owns the vehicle) and while I was able to complete the turn in those conditions without an accident, I am not certain she would have been able to do so.

7 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/20/2014

Vehicle stalled about 2 weeks ago. Oil change light and low tire pressure light came on a week later. Had maintenance done a week later. I was not notified about any recalls. Noticed that the steering wheel was really loose after rotate and balance was done. Took car to dealership and reported issue with steering. Dealership stated that it may need alignment but could not do service until next week. Put gas in car and vehicle stalled. Battery and oil light came on. After a few more times was able to get it started. Stalled again stalled again at stop light. Made it to auto parts shop and put fuel injection fluid in tank. Car stalled. Finally started again. Made it to repair shop. Did diagnostic tests no codes reported. They examined the fuel and it was good. They guessed that the fuel pump may need replacing. I researched recalls on my VIN and found that there are 2 recalls on the vehicle that were never performed. Purchased vehicle in may. Never received recall notices. Repair shops and dealerships are not checking for recalls when diagnosing problems.

8 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/21/2014

It started as a recall. There was danger of fire in the motor. Took in on April 21, 2014 and told it would be back in 2 days. Down hill from there. Bad water pump. Waiting for parts. The motor has been taken apart and put back. Dealer test drove and "check engine light" came on. This has happened twice. Ford has said they would send a "new" motor. This is July 7th and I still don't have my car back. Dealer said they don't know when I would get it. Also -- the Escape has a steering problem. It hangs when you are turning or changing lanes driving 70 mph and they can't identify the problem. They say that Ford hasn't had any complaints.

For about the past month, the power steering would not activate and I had to turn off my car and it came back on. The steering while has been shaking while driving. Today though, was the first time it went out while driving. I called Ford consumer line and they seemed unconcerned about this issue. 10 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

At highway speed, powersteering locked up. After shutting vehicle off and restarting, pump re-engaged. This has happened frequently since, and causes the vehicle to be uncontrollable. Steering becomes so tight that any adjustment is nearly impossible and driver is at the mercy of speed until able to stop. Dealership reports this to be "common" but a major repair, and not the result of excessive use or abuse. Clearly, this is a design and safety issue.
