37 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/15/2011

The glass on the driver's side door of my vehicle has many vertical scratches - more as I use the window. I am fearful that as time passes these scratches will impair my view. I have read of many owners having the same problem and at least one in which the glass spontaneously 'spider webbed'. I have contacted the local Ford dealer as well as Ford customer care regarding this issue and because the vehicle is out of warranty for that component they will not repair. They will not even allow a field representative to have a look. Ford has issued a technical service bulletin - TSB 10-25-5 that describes the problem I am experiencing and the repair procedures. Currently there are numerous scratches on the driver's side and a few on the passenger side (passenger window is used less frequently). . Read more...

42 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/06/2011

My husband and I were at our camp site and loading the vehicle for a trip in the woods. It was early morning, around 34 degrees outside. We had the rear hatch door open, putting the dogs inside the back of the vehicle. Upon closing the hatch, the rear hatch window violently exploded. Glass went flying everywhere, luckily the dogs weren't hurt and no persons were in the car at the time. We immediately called our Ford dealer to report the incident & asked if there was a defect known and if this was a warranty issue. They said they had never heard of a problem. This is extremely dangerous!!! I can only imagine there are probably lots more of these incidents that haven't been reported because most companies flat out tell you glass is not covered.

43 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/20/2011

Closed rear door on my 2010 Ford Escape. The window shattered and the glass cut up my hand.

44 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/20/2011

This is a more detailed description of the occurrence: I was about to leave work, temperature at 27 f. I loaded gear in my trunk of the vehicles not using the the raised glass option, but the full door. Upon closing the door, the rear windshield shattered and the glass fell on my hand on the way down, cutting it up. The piston rods on either side both broke out. . . Looks like the plastic cracked on both. Prior to shattering, the window appeared to have bubbles in it. Dealer said that it was normal and cosmetic. Ford extended warranty and customer support have said that their glass is not covered by warranty. . . So mile 1, if it shatters like this, the consumer is held liable. Filing with insurance company and looking for a company that will cover a window failure.

45 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/31/2010

I closed the rear hatch of the Escape and the rear glass exploded. The car was in the driveway of my house and the glass went everywhere, covering the cargo area of the vehicle and the driveway. There was nothing even close to touching the glass inside or outside of the car when it shattered. I received a small cut on my hand from the glass that I was able to treat myself. The vehicle was about a week old at that time and we took it back to the dealer to have them address the issue.

46 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/27/2010

The rear window in our 2005 Ford Escape spontaneously exploded as I was driving along the road. The temperature was about 5 degrees celsius and it was raining. I was using the window defogger and the rear wiper. The explosion sounded like a shotgun blast and a large amount of glass flew into the vehicle. There was also glass on the rear bumper. My daughter and two of her friends were in the back seat when this happened, and glass flew in toward them. I maintained control of the vehicle, but was quite startled by the loud explosion! the driver's side hydraulic lift was hanging outside of the vehicle and the passenger side lift was still attached to a chunk of glass and in place in the frame of the window. My guess is that the hydraulic lift failed, exerted pressure on the window, and caused the explosion.

47 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/09/2010

2006 Ford Escape XLT - like many others, my rear window shattered for no reason. Had glass/rear wiper replaced but was then blowing fuses. So now have to have the rear wiper motor replaced on top of the glass. I have read several complaints of same issue but still no recall.

48 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/04/2010

Was loading shopping bags into the back of my 2010 Ford Escape when I closed the hatch, the back window exploded into a million pieces sending glass flying everywhere. I did not slam the back door, I closed it the same way I always close it.

49 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/26/2010

My husband was standing beside my Ford Escape which was parked in the driveway and the rear glass just exploded as he stood there. For no reason at all the whole window blew out. If he had been standing any closer, he would have been cut by glass or it could have exploded in his face causing eye damage. I have read a lot online where this has happened to many other Ford Escape owners and yet Ford is still not taking ownership of the problem. Updated 01/06/11 the rear hatch glass was defective. Updated 01/24/11.

51 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

After closing liftgate, rear glass exploded, sending shards 10 ft. The gas cylinder struts were then stuck at full extension out of the vehicle. They could not be pushed in with force. Weather was dry, 35 deg. F. We have owned four previous Escapes and have never seen anything like this.

Back windshield exploding on 2005 Ford Escape.

53 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/11/2010

I rented a 2010 Ford Escape SUV from dollar rental car in san jose. On 9/11/10 at about 6:00 am at my hotel I went to load my bags to return to the airport. By accident I unlocked the rear liftgate glass with the remote. (I did not think to re-lock it before opening the liftgate. ) after my bags were loaded, I closed the liftgate firmly (not softly, but not like king kong); upon impact of closing, the rear liftgate glass exploded, showering glass all over the pavement and in the back / on my luggage. There had been no contact with luggage in the back / my bags were low-profile (I have photos to prove; also, I have a 3rd-party witness who was loading his car several spaces away. ) the ambient air temperature was around 60 degrees; the weather was fair / clear. The car had not been entered since the day before; I did not ever use the rear defrost or wiper during the course of my three-day rental. When reviewing the damage, I noted how heavy the rear wiper motor is that is attached directly to the glass. The suspension rods for holding the liftgate glass in the raised position must be very strong to support that motor, especially with the shallow angles involved. (others reporting exploding rear windows explain that the compressed gas inside these devices causes the explosive nature of the failure. ) presumably this failure occurred because the glass was not locked, as it had not exploded during previous closings of the liftgate. There is no warning in the owners manual to be sure that the glass is locked before closing the liftgate. Possibly there was an invisible defect in the glass that contributed to the failure. I was "booby-trapped" by this car. In my 53 years I have never damaged a vehicle simply by opening and closing its doors. There were no other factors than those described above; I have photos, a 3rd party witness, and will be happy to testify these events in court. Updated 01/06/11 updated ivoq 01/07/tr updated 05/12/11.

54 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/24/2010

I rented a 2010 Ford Escape limited and a 2010 Ford taurus limited this week for vacation. As I was opening the liftgate on the Escape, the rear window make a creak noise and exploded into my face. I have cut all over my hands, but thank god it avoided my eyes. My 10 year old song had gashes on his legs from where the glass fell as well. I've been looking around and this seems to be a real problem with the Escapes. Take care of Toyota but take care of Ford too!.

55 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/11/2010

I got to work this morning around 8 am . . Within a half hour of working a CO-worker came to me and asked if I drive a Ford Escape and as I told her yes she said to come out to the parking lot to see my car. . . As I arrived to see what had happened. . . My rear window had appeared to have exploded. . . The temperature outside was under 80 degrees. . . I had not ran my ac or rear defrost. . . I filed a report with the police department and they said that there had been no appearance of attempted break in. . . The glass was on the inside as well as on the outside ( all over the parking lot ) and behind the 2 cars parked next to me. . Glad that I was not driving at the time!!! as I looked this up out of curiosity on the internet there were alot more of these complaints. . . What's a consumer to do when they pay through the nose for a vehicle and receive such trash???.

57 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/25/2010

This complaint involves the spontaneous explosion of the rear cargo door window in a 2010 Ford Escape. The explosion occurred for no apparent reason. My family members suffered very minor cuts and scratches. Some of our personal property was ruined by the millions of glass slivers that went everywhere. The vehicle was owned by budget car rental, so I do not know what the cost of repair was, since they ultimately did not hold me liable. I prepared a complaint with a lot of details that is over 5000 characters long. I do not want to re-write it here. Please contact me and tell me how to send the entire document, if you need it.

2006 Ford Escape rear window glass exploded for no reason.

60 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/28/2010

The rear window on our 2010 Ford Escape shattered when the door was closed. We purchased the car on November 5, 2009. The car was less than 90 days old and had less than 900 miles on it. It is used within a 10 mile radius of our home with very little expressway use. The Ford service department said that our warranty and extended care policy did not cover glass. The window was repaired through our insurance company. There was no evidence that the window had been hit by flying debris or misused in any way. We feel that the window/glass was defective and a safety concern. It could have caused more damage if it had shattered when we were driving or if someone had been in the back seat when it shattered.

61 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Escape. While driving the rear window had suddenly shattered without warning. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership. The current and failure mileages were 83900. Updated 1/14/10 updated 01/15/10.

62 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/05/2009

I have a 2006 Ford Escape and I was parked in the parking lot at my work and came out after I started my remote starter inside to find my cars rear window blown out. My husband had turned on my rear defrost that morning. It has never been on before, which I am sure is the cause behind it. I came home and called police. My rear glass window and the arms for it are ruined. I had to pay out of pocket for them to be replaced. Then I googled it and found the Ford forum and heard everyone else's incidents and it sounded quite familiar. I am happy that this did not happen when I was going down the road, I have a seven year old that sits in a booster seat and if it hurt him in any way I would feel sorry for Ford cause I would be their worst nightmare. Or where I was parked at my work (nursing home) that is where the residents go out for a cigarette so if it exploded in their face. That would have been a law suit for sure, not to mention what could have happened to them.

63 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/08/2009

Rear window literally blew out!.

64 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/10/2008

I drove my car from my home, to work that morning. It was a little chilly so I turned on my rear defrost so I could see out the back window. I drove my normal commute, about 7 minutes to work, parked my car, and went inside. Within 20 minutes I heard a loud bang, and noticed that my back window was blown out and exploded all over the parking lot. I had to call my insurance and file a claim to have the window replaced.

65 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/11/2008

This is the second time the rear window has exploded! the first rear window exploded 12. 11. 07 on a mild (55') rainy day while driving aprox 65 miles per hour on the highway with no other traffic. Yesterday (2. 11. 08), the same window gave way on a side street at aprox 35 mph with no other traffic. Yesterday makes the third window I have replaced in less than 12 mos. The first window (rear right passenger) exploded in while entering a freeway ramp with no traffic on the right side of the car. Most people go a life time with never having an exploding window while I have had 3 ! the glass repair shop I was referred to by the Ford dealership has stated that by observing the broken window, they are confident that at neither time was the defrost mechanism to blame. If I had not been close to my office on all three occasions. . . . . . . . . . I am confident that nobody would ever believe my stories!.

66 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/03/2008

The driver's window of my 2005 Ford Escape limited makes a horrible squealing sound when opening and closing. This has been occurring for about a year. When taken in for routine maintenance, I have noted this problem. I always get the same report "weather strips are dry" and were lubed. This fix does not alleviate the problem. Since the car was only a little over a year old when the problem began, I find it hard to believe that the weather strips have dried out.

67 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/03/2007

After a cold night with freezing rain, vehicle had a small layer of ice on rear window which was easily scrapped off after having rear defroster on. Defroster was on approximately 10 minutes. After pulling out of driveway and going approximately 100 yards the rear window exploded. The whole window shattered into tiny pieces. The window was replaced but not by Ford who claimed they were not responsible.

68 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/30/2006

The vehicle is a 2006 Ford Escape hybrid. While driving on a one-lane road (off ramp of hwy 101), the driver's side window shattered suddenly. No foreign objects appeared to have struck the window. The shattering of glass resulted in minor injuries to the driver and some damage to the interior of the vehicle. Ford customer service was contacted and Ford refused to take responsibility for the incident. Nothing was done by Ford to correct the failure.

69 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/14/2006

I bought a brand new Ford Escape ~ 1. 5 years ago. I was driving down the road at ~ 40 mph and suddenly my back windshield exploded. Shards of glass blew into my trunk as well as the back seat. When I went to the Ford dealership, they explained this was not covered under warranty and would not help me. I contacted my insurance company and they referred me to a local glass shop since the dealership was so over-priced. There was no evidence of a foreign object hitting my exterior window, so I would like to warn all Ford Escape owners of this hazard to you and your families.

70 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/11/2005

Driving 2005 Ford Escape on 4 lane highway at approximately 70 mph. Outside temperature around 85 deg. Air conditioner was running. Rear driver side door window shattered for no apparent reason. No rock or other projectile found inside the vehicle. No exterior damage on door or surrounding area. Had noticed "squeaking" noise from that general area for quite some time before window shattered. No passengers in rear seats, but would have been injuries if passengers present. Police report was made. Unable to determine cause.
