Tl the contact owns a 2004 Ford Escape. While driving approximately 10 mph, the steering wheel failed due to severe rust and corrosion of the subframe. The contact attempted to replace the control arms and noticed that a huge chunk on the subframe was rotted and corroded with a large hole near the front passenger side of the subframe. The contact stated that the steering wheel was approximately 40 degrees off balance. In addition, the steering wheel was adjusted while turning left or right to prevent independently intrusive steering due to the steering imbalance. The contact was unable to make repairs to the vehicle due to the damage associated with the mount of the subframe that had partially detached from the vehicle. The contact concluded that any replacement measures in relation to the failure would be faulty. Champion Ford Volvo (2502 west 26th street, erie, pennsylvania 16506, (814) 878-2500) was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was inspected in 2014 per NHTSA campaign number: 14v165000 (structure), in which the crossbrace was applied to the vehicle for preventative subfame damage in July of 2014. The failure mileage was approximately 128,000.

I started my vehicle, reversed then put it into drive. A warning sensor popped up stating steering assist failure. The steering wheel would not move. I put the vehicle into park and restarted it. The warning sensor no longer appeared. I researched this happening to the same vehicle model and it seems to be an ongoing problem with the Ford Escape. Seems dangerous to not have a factory recall already , what if I were driving down a busy street or highway.

Recall 14s05. I received a recall notice regarding my power steering shortly after purchasing this vehicle. I took it in as instructed. The dealership "reprogrammed it" as instructed by Ford. Now the torque sensor that was also under same recall is out and they will not fix it. They are telling me the recall was satisfied. After doing some research and reading other stories about the same issue I feel this was a scam by Ford to satisfy the recall. They are pushing the cost to the consumer. The reprogram is just a warning that the steering is going to fail it was never any fix. The sensor should have been replaced. This is a safety warning on their own admission when you call to inquire about the recall. I really think this is wrong on every level.

Electric steering assist failure -- sudden and complete failure. On highway. . . Outside temp was 5 f above zero. Two children in car (one year old and 3 year old). Without warning (and during a 45 degree curve) the steering assist went out and at first the steering assist attempted to correct the steering and that made matters worse -- holding the wheel steady and continuing thru the turn was a challenge (and, I am 'stout' guy!). Got off the highway ASAP. Then an electric burn smell started. . Steering column (?). Got the grand kids out of the car (into the 5 degree temp) in a hurry! car now in the shop . $2,000 repair and may not be complete. Will find out final number today.

Immediate steering failure of the electronic steering with no notice or warning. Steering was working fine in the morning but upon starting the car in the afternoon, there was no power steering. In the last month I have had a fault code, steering assist failure. 4 times in my driveway upon start up, almost drove off driveway down 20 foot creek. One of them while traveling from a 55mph state route trying to turn right, slowed to below 20 mph and tried to turn wheel. The steering wheel did not turn, I traveled across two lanes of traffic and onto a gravel entrance for tractors into the field. I had to lock the brakes up and slid into the corn field. Once stopped, I turned the Escape off and let it sit for 10 minutes, restarted the Escape and backed out onto the road safely. I am at roberts Ford in alton, IL. The code is not showing, (so says the service writer, so Ford is not willing to repair. The date below is the last time in which this has happen. Safety before production, must be they don't care about my family or the public. Time for social media.
Intermittent loss of electronic power steering similar to those reports listed in those vehicles covered under the recall. All failures happen while parked and in motion. I believe that Ford needs to dig a bit deeper and issue an amendment to this recall to fix these vehicles before the lives of others are endangered and I do not want to risk the lives of him, myself or others on the road due to the intermittent acts of the steering failures within my vehicle.
2016 Ford Escape with 5770 miles. Started car and had steering assist fault. No power steering. Had to be towed to dealer. They replaced the steering unit due to a steering control unit failure. If it would have happened while driving I probably would have been involved in an accident as it was near impossible to turn the steering wheel. Repair covered by warranty. Vehicle was stationary at the time of failure.
