Within a week of replacing inner & outer tie rods, a steering fault, service now message appeared on the information display on September 25, 2020. At time vehicle was being driven within 35 mph speed limit on a four lane norfolk, virginia city street. The vehicle was driven about a mile further to a safe parking spot. After stopping and checking the manual, vehicle was restarted according to manual instructions. The message changed to steering loss, stop safely. We conferred with the carmasters service center that performed the tie rod replacement. After turning the ignition on again, the steering loss, stop safely message remained. The vehicle was then towed to carmasters, upon their advice, for diagnosis. The diagnosis was a binding of the steering rack and pinion. Diagnostic test fault code c 102d was reported. Inspection to confirm damage was also reported. Recommended repair was replacement of power assist steering rack and pinion, followed by front end alignment. Cost estimate was $3,200 for Ford dealer supplied replacement rack & pinion electric power assist assembly installation. Fortunately no personal injury resulted. Vehicle is drivable with great effort without power assist. Ford customer service was called on September 29 to confirm increasing frequency of such assisted steering failure, as noted in NHTSA posting and general internet postings. Appears to be a significant safety failure on a vehicle of 45,744 miles with regular maintenance. We have no knowledge of any incident that would have damaged the rack and pinion in the over 2 years we have owned the vehicle, during which we drove about 30,000 miles. Ford customer service advised we would be unlikely to get assistance with the repair, unless the repair was performed by a Ford authorized service center and the NHTSA ruled the rack and pinion power assist was faulty.

When I was driving I heard some loud noise and when I stopped I found that the rear passenger strut shot up thru the back interior of the car. This was due to the entire wheel well rusting out. I also was driving another time when the front end started to shake. I stopped and got out and seen that the front tires were facing sideways. The tie rod broke. I could have been seriously hurt or killed.

the consumer received a recall notice in Jan 2012. The notice indicated she would be informed when the parts required to complete the safety recall would become available, which wouldn't be until the second quarter. The vehicle caught on fire while parked, which was prior to the recall, but was quickly extinguished. Shortly after the fire, the vehicle was repaired. Several months later, the consumer was partly compensated by Ford in the form of a check for $1900 accompanied by a document which stated by accepting the compensation, she would also be signing off on any other claims. The consumer also stated the catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, master cylinder, wiring harness, abs, brake line booster, power steering rack and pinion, tie rods, intake manifold as well as the air bag were all replaced. The steering column would freeze, the rear passenger door handle fell off, rendering the door unstable, the coolant light illuminated, the oil pan needed to be replaced, the air condition stopped working and the rear shock were leaking.

The 2008 Escape I own has been the most dangerous vehicle that hit the road. The most recent failure has been the steering shaft and a joint which caused the vehicle to be unable to steer. It happened in a parking lot and I just slammed on the brakes so I did not hit anything but it could have been much worse. The car was clunking and my mechanic said most likely it's a ball joint or tie rod and to get it in soon, but I have been trying to catch up as this vehicle was just in due to the failure of the transmission cooler which was almost a $1000 repair. The car again is undriveable, and from what I researched this problem is another $1500 to repair. Ford is making money hand over fist with these vehicles and will not repair anything. Second major issue where I was told out of warranty not our problem! people are going to get killed, if I wasn't 1 year from paying this junk box off I would dump it. The first issue almost caused a major accident because the part that failed dumped all my transmission fluid out and I went to merge onto the highway and my vehicle almost stood still and would not move. This steering problem would have been much worse as 95% of my 55 mile commute is highway and I am thanking god it happened in a parking lot and not on the highway. Someone needs to help us not only to get Ford to fix and pay for their faulty product but to recall these items before someone gets killed!!!! don't buy a Ford Escape they are dangerous and a huge money pit!.

Took my 2005 Ford Escape in for an inspection and was told it would not pass unless I had the left front tie rod replaced. Before Friday, I had never even heard of a tie rod, much less had to have one replaced. I had several used vehicles before I got my new Escape in 2004 and none of them ever had to have a tie rod replaced. Long story short, both front tie rods were replaced, a front end alignment had to be performed and all total it cost me $690. 00. I'm very upset about it, because I take excellent care of my car and was having no sterring problems whatsoever. I would like to know if there was a recall on this part that I wasn't made aware of and if anyone else had to have one or more tie rods replaced.
When entering a highway we hit a deep groove in the road and then proceeded onto the highway. Within 10 seconds the car wheels and steering wheel went out of control. The car weaved and bobbed for about 200 feet uncontrollable. I was told the steering rack and tie rod snapped. We hit someone while our car spun around into on coming traffic and we flew into the guard rail at such force the car lifted and got lodged on the guard rail. This probably saved our lives because at that point we had done a 180 and were facing oncoming traffic. Can not get an help from Ford.
: the contact stated while traveling 10 mph, the steering wheel locked. The contact then reversed and put the vehicle back in drive. After traveling a short distance, the vehicle would not move. The contact noticed the front driver side wheel was turned the opposite direction of the other tires. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, where it was determined the tie rod fractured and because the vehicle was driven after this, the axle fractured as well. The tie rod and axle were replaced. Updated 7/14/2006 - the dealer informed the consumer that the tie rod fractured due to rust.

Front end troubles with Ford Escape 02 XLT. Constant noises coming from the front. Dealer changed stability bar, engine mounts and now need to change tie rods and fix steering wheel noise but there is no fix as of yet per the dealership. Car is only driven on suburban roads and never been off road.
2001 Ford Escape XLT, mileage of < 42,000, in otherwise excellent condition, purchased used, in Nov 2003 with just over 36,000 miles, now requires replacement of worn tie rod ends. This is premature for the usage. Ford motor company should be aware of this.
