36 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/20/2018

Purchased the vehicle in January 2017. Approximately mid December 2018 a code popped up on my dash "power steering assist fault" and the steering wheel shakes as I drive. I code is continuously on. I contacted Ford, who tell me there was a recall on the 2009 Ford Escape in 2016 for this exact code, but because my vehicle was not assembled in kansas city, that they cannot fix it under the recall and I would have to pay for it out of pocket. I don't feel this is right, as this is a safety issue and could be dangerous if I lose my power steering while on the road.

37 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/12/2018

Last year I noticed the rust around doors and wheels, im retired & a disabled 77 yr old man so I drive it once a week. Over the summer I notice it handling funny, had it serviced and inspected. I was on route 30 a mile from my house it started shaking & making a horrible noise, the steering wheel was vibrating, I barely managed getting wheels to turn it off the hwy, I thought to myself, this damn thing feels like it's gonna fall apart, home was 1/4 mile, noise & vibrating continued, struggled turning wheel into my driveway, parked it, got out and front passenger side wheel is tilted way out. My son jacked it up and said my lower control arm is completely rusted out or thru and broken off and it is all rusted bad underneath & said it's scrape.

38 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/26/2018

Tl - the contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. While driving 35 mph, the contact noticed that the power assist light illuminated on the dash and the steering wheel was vibrating and moving from left to right. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (crest Ford, inc: 22675 gibraltar rd, flat rock, mi 48134) where the technician informed the contact that the power steering assist needed to be replaced. The vehicle had a recall:14v284000 (steering) a year and half ago associated with the VIN and the dealer updated software. The recall is no longer associated with the VIN, but the power steering assist failure had recurred. The VIN search revealed no recalls associated with the VIN. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN had no recall associated with the vehicle and there was nothing they could assist with. The vehicle had not been repaired . The failure mileage was 170,000. Nb.

39 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/02/2018

Vehicle steering wheel started shaking back and forth while stopped. Then started while driving at city and highway speeds. Several times the power steering has failed in the middle of a turn. When researching the issue I found that there was a recall but not for my VIN. When I called Ford they said there was a recallbut it has already been performed and is no longer covered even though the part that was supposed to be fixed was not replaced. Due to the issues the vehicle cannot be safely driven on the road. It seems that Ford is attempting to sidestep a safety recall by telling customers that they fixed a faulty torque sensor by simply updating the software which costs them nothing. Then when the part fails they tell customers the recall no longer applies because they fixed the problem. Im attempting to get paperwork from Ford because I don't even remember it going in for a recall in the first place. How does Ford not have an obligation to replace parts that they know are faulty when there is a safety recall? the whole point is to remove the parts from the vehicle before they fail after it is determined that they will fail. The recall is 14s05.

40 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/26/2018

Torque sensor recall -- initial symptoms happened while on highway, trouble steering above 45mph, steering wheel vibrating 5-10degree angle on its own. Once off the highway turning requiring wide angle to go left or right. After parked, unable to get out of nosed-in park space. Dashboard wrench light lite -- error code b2278 diagnosis by auto center. Difficult steering on street, took to Ford dealership told VIN not covered by recall even though steering shaft torque sensor malfunctioned. Paid for torque sensor replacement for a "free of charge recall remedy".

41 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/09/2018

2 years ago , while driving my 2009 Ford Escape in the city and highway, I had experienced difficulty with the steering freezing while driving. I had to restart the car to free the steering wheel. I took the car to the dealers where I purchased the car. The car was evaluated, they felt that the car was ok and was told that there were no recalls for the car. At this time, the steering wheel shakes and at times the steering is difficult because of the vibrations and freezing. Turning the car off and on frees the wheel but the vibrations continues with a slight touch of the wheel. I took it to a mechanic, who informed me that it would cost 1,200. 00 to repair, however; I could still drive the car if I could stand the noise.

42 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/05/2018

Steering wheel shakes at a complete stop, when you start to move the shake become worse and you need to hold the wheel with 2 hands otherwise the wheel turns at anytime.

43 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/05/2018

I had my Escape serviced for the 14s05 recall in oct 2014 where they did a software update for the epas in the steering column. Now my car's steering wheel shakes with a clunking noise when idling. . . And sometime while moving. I see reports/reviews that the power-steering will likely go out soon and put me at risk of a crash. All reviews mention estimates from Ford of $1400-$2000 to fix. They are claiming no responsibility to fix this, and yet I'm stuck with a serious threat to myself and others should something happen. Seriously, who has $2000 lying around to fix something that Ford should be responsible for, since the electric power assembly had a defect in it's design?! I also hear that replacements have the same defect and will likely fail again. I haven't been in an accident yet, but I'm having anxiety now every time I have to go somewhere.

44 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/15/2018

Already had this recall fixed-# 14s05. Recall originally "fixed" in December of 2014. Steering wheel was shaking while driving and stationary, rattling noise. A new torque sensor was installed and that would take care of the problem. Today, having the same issues- steering wheel turning on its own, rattling. Doesn't matter if I'm driving at a stop light, turning, all the time. Have been told since it was already fixed(no it wasn't), they now have to replace the steering column which will cost about 1500 and it is not covered under the original recall. But they also say, that I should hold on to my receipt in case the recall gets extended, and can maybe get reimbursed. What's funny, is that the new steering column is redesigned(interesting) and other parts need to be changed along with it. Seems like Ford knew there was a problem the whole time and just took the cheap way out, and knew the original recalled parts would fail again and they wouldn't have to pay since it was already "fixed". Not right.

45 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/12/2018

I bought a used 2009 Ford Escape in September, about a month ago, my steering wheel started shaking when turning and then it went a away for a few weeks. Now, it is terrible and I took it into a repair shop for a diagnostic and they handed me paperwork from Ford motor company regarding a safety recall #14s05. After doing some research and calling Ford corporate and a local dealership, Ford will not accept this recall and tells me that my car does not qualify. I did some research on my own and it seems that there are thousands of people that are having this same problem with Ford. Something needs to be done. This problem affects your steering capability and is not safe to be on the roads. Ford is at fault and needs to clean this up.

46 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/07/2018

Failure Date: 02/02/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. While driving 75 mph, the contact noticed that the power steering fault indicator illuminated and the steering wheel began shaking. The contact drove home and turned off the vehicle. The next morning, the vehicle was started and the power steering was inoperable. The power steering indicator was still illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the dealer (phil long Ford at chapel hills, 1565 auto mall loop, colorado springs, CO) where it was diagnosed that the power steering column needed to be replaced. The contact inquired about a previous recall attached. Since the power steering control module was reprogrammed in 2014, the contact was informed that the recall could no longer be honored. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact due to the age of the vehicle and the reprogramming of the power steering control module, the repair would have to be paid for at his expense. The vehicle remained at the dealer. There were no recalls associated with the vehicle. The failure mileage was 149,000.

48 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/02/2018

Steering wheel started shaking and vibrating at stop lights. This went on for about 3 days then a message appeared on the instrument panel that said "power steering assist fault". After reaching my destination I turned the vehicle off. Upon restarting I had no power steering. I drove the vehicle home then to the delership the next morning. They explained that they retrieved a code dtc b2278 and said either the torque sensor or the steering gear is bad and they would need to tear down the steering column to find out. The estimate for this was $1200 to $1800 dollars. Not having the resources to have the car repaired at the time they sent me on my way. Humorously the power steering was working again after they retrived the fault code. That lasted about two days and no more power steering. This vehicle is like driving in the fifties again. I am a large guy and really have to strain to make a tight curve. I can't imagine what would happen were my wife driving. I understand after a little research that this is a very common problem for Ford and some vehicles have been recalled for it, unfortunately not mine. I want to let you know that the problem is real and the danger is imminent. Would you please check into this dangerous situation of losing power steering before someone gets killed?.

Now it shakes even when I'm driving and will get jerky or stop working completely. This happens on the highway, when I'm stopped at a stop light or when I'm pulling out of a driveway! from what I have researched this happens to thousands of other Ford owners. The power steering simply gives out and they want you to pay $1,500 to have the whole column replaced!.

62 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/23/2017

My vehicle has erratic steering issues. The electric steering caused my vehicle to literally drive right off the road into a tree. The steering wheel shakes back and forth while sitting still and causes the vehicle to drift all over the road at any given time without warning. It is a known issue, but Ford is making me pay to fix the vehicle by replacing the entire steering column of the vehicle to include electronics. Even the Ford service manager says in all his years he has never seen an entire column fail. However, after a quick google search, this is a huge issue for Ford and they are well aware of the problem. This issue will cause someone to die. It has already caused me to get in an accident by making the steering randomly jerk causing the vehicle to swerve off the road.

63 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/22/2017

Initially the "power steering assist fault" warning would pop up on my dash and go away, this happened several times over the course of a couple weeks before it stopped showing up and I didn't notice any problems. About a month later I noticed extreme shaking of my steering wheel, both while in motion and in park with the vehicle still running. After a few weeks of the steering wheel shaking, one evening the "power steering assist fault" warning came on and stayed on. The following morning when I started my car the light was still on and there was no power steering.

64 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/10/2017

I recently experienced power steering issues with my 2008 Ford Escape. I take very good care of my vehicle. I have never been in any accidents in this vehicle or had any mechanical issues. The steering wheel began shaking while driving it home on Friday and became increasingly harder to steer. When this happened I was driving about 15mph in town. I parked it right away. The next day I was unable to turn the wheel at all. The vehicle starts but is completely unable to be driven. After researching more on this issue, I found that there was a recall on 2008 Ford Escapes for this same issue. When I called the dealership and explained what had happened, they had me give them my VIN number. They then informed me that my specific vehicle did not qualify for recall repairs and the recall only applies to vehicles with a specific VIN number. I wanted to reach out and see if there is anything I can do to get this resolved considering this is a mechanical issue out of my control and may be a manufacturing error. Thank you for your assistance with this issue. Taylor vincent.

65 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/10/2017

The power steering went out while I was driving. Luckily, I was driving straight and not in the middle of a turn. The power steering will reset sometimes when I turn the car on and off. If the power steering is working when I first get in the car it will guaranteed fail within 20-30 minutes of driving. I've done research and found there are multiple power steering recalls and class-action lawsuits against Ford for these issues and expect them to apply this recall to my vehicle. Before the power steering went out, the steering wheel would shake at any speed above 65 mph and it continues to do so.

66 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/01/2017

Electric power assist failed. Steering wheel shakes violently while parked and driving. Steering pulling to sides while driving.

67 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/27/2017

A few weeks ago I began noticing that my steering wheel would vibrate (really more of a jerking back and forth motion) while the car was idling. Soon it was doing it every time the car slowed or stopped. Now I can feel the jerking of the wheel even while driving. I took the car in to a firestone for service who told me that this was part of a Ford recall (14-s05) and that I needed to take it to a Ford dealership. The Ford dealership is telling me that the recall is closed and that I need to pay $1000 for a new steering column. I called Ford who said that there is nothing they can do. This is a major safety issue as the power steering can completely go out (which they know). Many others have had issues getting Ford to honor the recall and fix their steering column.

68 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/04/2017

I took my car in when the recall 14s05/NHTSA recall 14v-284 was received and the dealership updated the appropriate modules to prevent loss of steering due to a torque sensor fault. At the time of the recall I was not having any steering problems, so I felt the module updates were to fix any steering problems. As of Jan 4, 2017, the steering wheel started vibrating while in idle. I does not do it all the time. I called the local Ford dealership and they ran the diagnostic test which showed the steering torque sensor was bad and they will be getting me an estimate for repairs. I was told the part itself is relatively inexpensive, but the labor is intense. I feel Ford has taken the easy way out of fixing a potentially hazardous problem. I have always driven Ford cars, but after this costly manufacturing defect I may switch to another make of car.

69 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/15/2016

2008 Ford Escape hybrid steering wheel vibration at idle for approx. 500 miles then all of a sudden while driving on a city street the power steering totally went out. Wrench light went on the dash, then power steering totally gone. I could hardly turn the steering wheel to get it home which was 7 miles away. 3 months before that the air conditioner quit working in August! I had a new air conditioner installed, then a week later 2 blender motors had to be replaced because ac was blowing hot air and heater blew cold air. This model must be a lemon. At this point I think this car is unsafe to drive! I have never had problems like this from Ford. I hope there is a recall on this model but after researching it sounds like Ford is unwilling to do anything about it.

70 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2008 Ford Escape
