Ford F-250 owners have reported 9 problems related to battery cable (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The positive terminal of the passenger-side battery cable assembly melted. Not corrodedit melted. The terminal was like grey marshmallow. All required and recommended truck service has been performed on time and by the Ford dealership and no anomalies with the battery or electrical system were ever noted by the dealership. Truck is less than 36 months old and the batteries were original and oem and less than their 36 month guaranteed life. No damage evident to the battery. This is dangerous and could of potentially started a vehicle fire. Even more interesting is this cable assembly is on an emergency back-order. The part is hc3z 14300 a :cable assembly - battery to battery and Ford quotes $2,500 - $3,000 to fix it (parts and labor) and they claim it failed due to normal wear and tear which is preposterous. This is a safety issue and the NHTSA needs to be aware of it. This could of lead to a deadly vehicle fire. Again, this was not corrosion of the terminal, this was the terminal melting. I still have the batteries that this situation occurred with although new batteries have now been installed in the vehicle.

Battery cables have excessive corrosion. Batteries are leaking acid from top of battery.
Driving along no indication of any problem and engine stopped. Tried starting several times and noticed ignition switch seemed very stiff and would not fire off starter, lights worked, door bell worked, no ignition. Inspected engine compartment and did not notice anything unusual, battery cables were tight, checked radiator and found it working just fine. After a while tried ignition again and started, drove a couple more miles to home safely. Next am could not get the ignition to work at all, ignition switch felt like it was broken when key turned to the maximum position. . . Reconfirmed battery tested good but bought a new battery any way, installed and still no response from ignition.
After several inches of rain my 1997 Ford f250 light duty began trying to start while parked in the driveway. The only way to stop it was to disconnect the battery cable. The battery cable was red hot and smoking. Luckily my neighbor noticed or it would have caught fire. This is the second occurrence of this problem for this vehicle. Both followed heavy rains. The first occurrence included spontaneous starting, interior lights coming on, left side window failure, speedometer failure, and continued operation of fan, windows and radio with ignition off. Researching this issue has made me aware that this is a common problem due to water leaking through the windshield and seeping into the generic electronic module and fuse box causing multiple symptoms including the ones stated above.

The contact owns a 2002 Ford f250. The contact was driving approximately 70 mph. When pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal there was no power response. The rpm decreased to an idle speed. The driver pulled over to the side of the road. The engine was turned off. There was a waiting period of a few seconds before the positive cable was removed and then reconnected to the battery. The vehicle resumed to normal operation. The identical failure occurred again and the battery cable was adjusted. The authorized dealer was notified. There was not a safety recall on the vehicle. The vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunction. The failure and current mileages were 54,009. Updated 05/10/10

2004 Ford F-250 4x4 superduty 6. 0l diesel - engine fire. Cause: negative battery cable vibrated loose and caused ground on a/c to overheat and catch the a/c housing on fire. Fire resulted from attempt to start the vehicle in the owner's driveway on a cool day. Vehicle was towed to local dealership and repaired ($1250). The repair included tack welding the negative cable to the engine block. A few months later, a resistor in the a/c blower had to be replaced. The dealership claimed it was unrelated and the repair was an addition $114.

At 9 pm vehicle parked vehicle in driveway and it caught on fire. Vehicle had sat for about 10 hours. Vehicle was driven for about 20 minutes before it was parked. There were no indications from mechanics upon regular inspection that there was a problem. No problems with vehicle before and no modifications. A neighbor knocked on consumer's door and advised him that there were flames coming from the dashboard and the hood as well. By the time fire department arrived the windows were gone, inside destroyed. The fire department, cut the battery cables, and then showed the owner that battery post was able to turn 360 degrees, which meant the post was loose. Also, the fire department reported that it was an electrical fire. Owner contacted the dealer, who was unconcerned, and told the owner to call insurance company. Owner will call Ford today. The police did not do a report.

F250 Ford diesel caught fire while parked. I contacted the Ford dealership and have not heard back from them as of date. The vehicle was taken to the Ford dealership in tuscaloosa, al in January for repair. The dealership checked for a burning smell and said it was the fuel filter. They replaced fuel filter and a month later the truck caught fire.
The consumers vehicle was not included in the recall regarding the battery cable and subsequently the vehicle caught fire. The vehicle proceeded to burn even when extinguished with a fire extinguisher. The consumer was told by the manufacture the battery cable recall did not include his vehicle.
