Failure Date: 10/11/2014

I purchased this vehicle with a full set of the exact same tire brand, type, size, and load range. The new tires were to replace the defective tires which had the exact same problem as these: belt failure. Tire failure: belts began to separate leading to uneven wear and eventually failure of the sidewall.

2 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2001 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 09/12/2011

On September 12, 2011, a kumho road venture at tire, size lt235/85r16, dot k2oryd4a3508 (manufactured at kumho’s binh duong plant in vietnam in the 35th week of 2008) suffered a catastrophic tread separation, resulting in severe injuries to the front seat passenger of the Ford F-250 and the death of her son, who was 32 weeks old and still in utero. A lawsuit has been filed against kumho tire CO. , inc. And kumho tire u. S. A. , inc. In the united states district court for the district of kansas (case no. 2:13-cv-02393-jtm-tjj). During the discovery stage of the case, the passenger retained troy cottles, a renowned tire failure expert. After inspecting the subject tire, mr. Cottles found the following defects in the subject tire: (1) inadequate bonding between belts (trapped air/steam blister impressions); (2) premature oxidation of the belt skims; (3) belting defects (coincidental belt endings, irregular belt wire spacing, gapped belt splices, dog-eared splices, snaking, and spread cables); (4) cord shadows on the innerliner; (5) low top belt width to tread width ratio; and (6) inadequate application of nylon cap plies. As part of his work on the case, mr. Cottles tested two exemplar kumho road venture at tires of the same size as the subject tire that were also manufactured at kumho’s vietnam plant. Both of those tires failed in sidewall failure mode in approximately 10,000 miles or less under proper loads, inflations, and speeds that were monitored daily. See attached test reports and photographs. This information is being submitted by the attorneys for the injured passenger, and with her permission, in hopes that this tire (and those similar to it) will be investigated and recalled to ensure no one else is needlessly injured or killed as a result of these dangerous and defective tires.

5 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2002 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 12/02/2009

We had purchased 4 tbc wild country radial xtx sport tires which were manufactured during a recent recall period. The tires were replaced with a new set in may 'o8 that we were told were manufactured after the dates of the recall period. We just noticed cracks in the sidewalls of these newer tires (we have approx. 34,000 miles on the tires). We are not certain when these cracks may have appeared, or at what mileage. My wife took the vehicle back to the tire dealer (les schwab tire center in redmond, or) the dealer said that the tires have sidewall separation (which I believe is what the problem was with the tires that were the subject of the last recall), that the cause is from running the tires under the recommended pressure and that they are willing to prorate the tires. We have the tire pressure checked every couple of months with an oil change, so the tires were not running under pressure for the entire time we have had them, and of course we are not certain if they were all actually "under pressure" today, or we were just told that. I would like to know if you have had any other reports of this problem re-surfacing with this particular tire.

6 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2006 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 11/09/2008

My tires sidewalls are completely coming apart with deep cracks in sidewalls. The tires are not very old,the pick-up isn't used for hauling heavy loads and has not been stored in hot areas. . The tires have been rotated regularly and have been inspected by a tire place that has said that the truck is not safe to drive. The consequences of these tires coming apart obviously would result in a major accident which could result in death. I have tried to get the tires replaced but have gotten no-where and was only offered a possible small rebate after would have paid full price for a new set.

13 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2003 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 04/08/2006

I purchased a brand new uniroyal laredo tire near austin, texas at an ntb store. The ntb store put the tire on the right front of my 2003 Ford F-250. Within 10 minutes of leaving the ntb store, the tire catastrophically failed and I was barely able to bring my truck (pulling a large gooseneck trailer) under control on I-35. The failure could have been disastrous not only for me, but for many of the other people driving on I-35, as vehicles had to quickly move out of my way as my truck was dragged across at least one lane of travel, the shoulder and into the grass on the side of the highway. Afterwards, the entire sidewall of the tire was found to have been ripped off the tire and my wheel was severely damaged. Clearly, this tire was defective in its manufacturer.

18 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2003 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 03/16/2004

In June 2003, I purchased a new 2003 Ford f250. It had firestone steeltex r4s lt 265/75 r16 tires on it. On March 16, 2004, the rear driver's side tire went completely flat as I was sitting at a red light. I pulled over to the side of the road and found that the tire had a rip across the side wall approximately 5 inches long. The tires (and truck) have less than 12,000 miles on them. I called Ford, and they referred me to a local firestone dealer. At the firestone dealer, one of the mechanics looked at the tire and said there was no apparent reason for the tire to split, but a manager would have to look at it before it could be replaced. The manager looked at it and said I must have hit a large rock or something. I explained that I was sitting at a signal light when it happened and that the truck had never been off the pavement. He said maybe somebody came by and cut it or stuck an ice pick in it (as if I wouldn't have noticed that in my rear view mirror). Then he told me it was Ford's fault because they were using the wrong kind of tire for such a big vehicle, but he would sell me a new one at a discount. The firestone website has specs for this tire, and specifically states they are for Ford f250/f350. I refused his offer, and called Ford again. This time they referred me to firestone customer care. I called and they told me that there was no recall on these tires, but that they would note my complaint in their system. They also told me several times to make sure I safely buckle my children when they are in the vehicle. I've found a number of similar complaints about these tires on the internet. At this point, for the safety of my family, I'm having all four tires replaced with something other than firestone/bridgestone tires. I'm keeping the tire that blew out and the receipt from the new tires to submit to firestone in the future if a recall is put in place.

24 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2000 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 09/17/2003

These tires (general grabber tr, size 235/85r16) came as original equipment on a 2000 Ford f250 super duty. This truck is used mainly on paved roads; occasionally on gravel roads. The worst "off road" duty this truck ever sees is a rare trip onto dirt or grass. I am careful about keeping wheels balanced and tires properly inflated and rotated. In the spring of 2003, with about 20,000 miles on the tires, I discovered a grapefruit sized bulge in the inside sidewall of one of them. A field representative from general tire proclaimed that this bulge was due to a "road hazzard. " [my first sidewall bulge in 37 years of driving, but I guess it can happen. However, don't let the low milage on the truck fool you. Although I drive less now than I used to, with other vehicles I still average over 35,000 miles per year. I have owned a lot of tires. ] I was now suspicious of these tires, so in August 2003 (at 22,000 miles) before a 2,000 mile tript which I had to make with the truck, I carefully inspected the tires and double checked the inflation. Upon my return home I discovered a lemon sized bulge in the outside sidewall of another one of this set. I then immediatly replaced the tires on the truck with another brand. Upon inspection of the removed tires, I discovered that a third tire had a walnut sized bulge in a sidewall. So, in 24,000 miles, three of the original four tires developed sidewall bulges. Interestingly, all of the bulges were between the bead and the widest part of the sidewall, not between the widest part of the sidewall and the tread - where you would would expect a tire to be more likely to encounter a "road hazzard. " in my opinion, the biggest "road hazzard" I've encountered in this truck are these tires. I am not interested in any "compensation" from this company. I just want to warn other consumers and NHTSA to watch these tires. Judging from the other complaints about general grabbers, sidewall failures are a high percentage problem.

25 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2002 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 09/07/2003

Tire blow out.

26 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2000 Ford F-250

27 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1999 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 07/03/2003

Had a defective firestone steeltex blow out on a rear passenger side 1999 Ford pickup while towing a boat. The tires were very low mileage and had the proper amount of inflation. The entire sidewall of the tire disentegrated. The tire has been sent to firestone , akron facility for a review by experts to try and determine the reason for the failure. The blowout was very violent causing body damage to the wheel well of the truck. It is fortunate that the failure occurred on the rear of the truck as a failure on the front could have caused loss of control of the vehicle. The tires were immediately removed from the vehicle and I still have them minus the actual blowout which was sent to the firestone facility as indicated above.

28 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1997 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 06/11/2003

Approximately 4 months after purchasing a travel trailer consumer set out for a trip and the tires began blowing out about 200 miles after they started. Three of the tires blew out on this trip from kentucky to nevada. The sidewalls blew out, and only the rims were left. Consumer contacted goodyear, and was told there was no recall. But there was a better tire he could purchase. Dealership where he purchased the vehicle told him they weren't responsible for the tires. Before this happened consumer made sure there was enough air in the tires, and the load wasn't too heavy. The fender was torn up due to this problem.

34 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2002 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 03/09/2002

I have experienced what appears to be a side wall failure of a firestone light truck tire. The failure occurred shortly after entering the highway at a speed of approximately 65 mph. While accelarating down the entrance ramp I noticed a vibration coming from the rear of the truck which stopped once I merged onto the highway at about 55 mph. At that time I thought the vibration was due to rough pavement on the entrance ramp. A short time later, possibly 3 or 4 miles, the driver side rear tire blew. There was a slight loss of control as the rear end of the truck felt as if it were sliding from side to side. The truck noticeably leaned to the left . The exterior sidewall (facing the outside of the truck) of the tire had separated entirely leaving only a small ring of rubber around the rim of the wheel. I'm concerned that this is the type of failure that has occurred with other firestone tires. When I bought this truck I was told by the dealership that these tire were safe. (dot number: ? tiresize: 265/75r16).

35 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1999 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 02/21/2002

While driving 70 mph, outside sidewall separated from the left rear tire. Had to wait until tire had cooled down before changing. Firestone steeltex at lt265-75-r16 dot vnw8 1xl - 079e4 - 008062 original equipment for a 1999, Ford, f250. Consumer sustained cuts and minor burns due to changing the tire.
