38 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2003 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 07/15/2006

My wife and I were traveling in our 2003 Ford F-250 super duty long-bed pickup with 4 firestone steeltex r4s tires filled to about 70psi (cold). The truck was carrying a light 8. 5' pop-up truck-camper (2500lbs) and pulling a small 18' open-bow ski boat (2300lbs) on a single-axle trailer (850lbs - measured tongue weight of boat & trailer = 260 lbs. We began from an RV park in red bluff, California, at approximately 10:30 am, northbound on interstate 5. Traffic moderate and weather was clear, dry approximately 95 deg f. Thirty minutes later, we were about 1 mile south of redding, California, driving approximately 58 mph in the right lane, when the truck suddenly began to shudder. Seconds later there was a loud thud, and all indications of a right rear blowout. I was able to safely pull onto the shoulder and stop. Investigation revealed a right rear tire failure. The tread was separated from the sidewall and all but wrapped around the axle. The mud flap and well lining was gone. The chrome wheel-well trim was mangled, the bed side-panel support arm was ripped away from the bed body, and the outside wall of the truck bed was folded under and bent around the exhaust pipe. There were numerous scratches and black marks all over the outside bed body and bumper. Later inspection revealed that the right rear shock mount was out of alignment and the shock jammed closed. After removing the ripped tread, blown tire and other broken pieces, I installed the spare. We were able to safely proceed to a nearby les schwab tire store a few miles away. I decided that I could not trust the remaining tires, so I purchased four new tires, new rear shocks and had the shock mount repaired at a total cost of $1000. I asked several technicians as well as the tire store manager to inspect the failed tire. They all agreed that the blown tire appeared to fail as a result of tread separation, rather than a puncture or sidewall failure.

39 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2001 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 07/03/2006

While driving at approximately 60 mph in my 2001 Ford f250 super duty pick up truck, the truck started to vibrate. I shifted into neutral, thinking it might be a u-joint or driveline problem and the vibration got worse. I went back into drive and it settled down somewhat. I stopped and looked over the tires, u-joints (what I could see of them, the truck is 4-wheel drive) and other suspension components. I did not notice any lumps or bumps on any of the tires. I decided to return home, a distance of about 20 miles. Approximately 3 miles form home, the truck shook violently and then there was a loud "slapping" noise. I pulled over and saw that I had separated a tread from the right rear tire. I picked up the separated tread and drove home at about 25 mph. I changed the tire at home. The tire was inflated to 55 psi and is still holding that pressure. The tire is a firestone steeltex radial a/t, lr e, dot number vdw8 txl 4400.

Three of four cooper tires suffered tread separations within a month. Two completely separated on the highway nearly causing loss of control and causing extensive vehicle damage from the tread impacting the vehicle. Tires were replaced with another brand. Cooper tire was notified. So far they claim no responsibility for damage to the vehicle. They have the first tire and I have the second and third as well as the separated tread. While cooper tire CO. Was evaluating our claim for the vehicle damage another cooper tire separated causing additional vehicle damage. This time I was driving, and can tell you there was no warning before the tread peeled off and smashed the rear taillight, dented the rear of the vehicle and bent the rear bumper!.

45 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 1999 Ford F-250

46 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2003 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 01/01/2006

Three continental general tire ameritrak's have failed on my 2003 f250 supercab (tire tread separation) since Jan. 2006 and non-responsive continental tire has failed to contact me, as they said they would, to expedite resolution of my claim! here are the actual facts: in Jan 06, the first tire, front passenger, failed with tread separated from tire while I was driving on the highway. During dealer vehicle/tire damage inspection, it revealed the other front tire showed signs of tread separation. Under warranty, the dealer repaired all body damage (over $3000. 00) and replaced the two failed front tires. My vehicle had 9600 miles on it. The dealer did the right thing. On 10-26-06 at 1:33 pm the 3rd "general tire ameritrak" tire tread on my 2003 f250 supercab separated, causing over $3000. 00 in body damage & at 16,194 miles on the vehicle/tires. On 11-20-06, continental tire, north carolina, received my claim (#6300003). On 11-27-06, continental tire received the failed tire. On 11-28-06, I e-mailed an inquiry to continental. On 11-29-06, I received a phone call and the unidentified female stated I should hear something within the next week. It is now 12-13-06 and I have heard nothing. My vehicle remains damaged, and it is unbelievable to me that continental is permitted to sell defective "general" tires and not expeditiously settle claims stemming from those defective tire failures. It's past time for continental to do the right thing and restore my vehicle back to pre-damage condition. Since tire tread separation has been well-established, historically, continental needs to be held accountable for the after-affects of their defective products . These tires are dangerous!!! I was driving on both occasions. I could have been killed. Continental is dragging their feet on settling the damages. These tires should not be on the market! how can continental conduct business as usual and not be held accountable for damages caused by failures in their product?.

I was traveling on interstate 80 in the fairfield, California area. My speed was approximately 65 mph. The left rear tire suffered a major tread separation which was very violent. I was able to keep the vehicle under control I believe due to my 24 years of police driving experience. My vehicle is a 2000 Ford f250 superduty pick up truck. I have firestone steeltex a/t tires on the vehicle. I am the original owner and the vehicle has approximately 47,000 miles. I did not receive any safety or recall information in regard to the tires from Ford or firestone. Due to the seriousness of the event I feel very lucky not to have been involved in a major crash.

49 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2001 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 09/18/2005

Incident I was on a trip to point reyes this last weekend. On the way home I had a front tire delaminate while I was towing my 27 foot travel trailer. Fortunately no one injured and I was able to exit the freeway safely. The tire did not deflate until after it was removed. The vehicle sustain about $2,000 in damage. I have approximately forty six thousand miles on the tires. When looking at pictures of the tires of the firestone/Ford recall this tire could looks be ones of the tires in the photos. 2001 f250 crew cab 4x4 short wheel base stock tire I bought the truck in October of 2000 new with these tires on it. Nomad 27ã‚?? approximately 7700 lbs dry about two weeks ago I had a lady in a small Honda civic with her small children run a red light in front of me. I was going about 45 miles per hour. I almost t boned her, I was fortunately able to swerve into on coming traffic (cars were in the slow lane) I swerve again and made an unexpected left turn. I had the truck lockup as hard could to stop, I was surprised as was wife that we did not hit the car. After that the front end felt off, I thought the alignment was off. I was planning on putting the truck in the shop for it's 45k checkup after our last planned camping trip of the year. On the trip I felt the alignment just did not feel right. On the way home on black point turn off hwy 37& hwy 80 on ramp we had a small car cut in front of us last minute to get on the freeway we had to lock up the rig, missed rear ending him by about 3ã‚??. The tire gave way about approximately 5-10 miles down the road. The reason for my email is if these tire are also defective, we did not get hurt but I do not want to see any one else get hurt. Thanks,.

52 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2001 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 08/25/2005

Threads on the rear cooper tire of my pickup truck came off the tire while driving on the expressway. The threads scattered all over the road and the cars and truck in back of me had to slow down to avoid the debris. The complete side of my pickup had to be replaced. This " load range e "tire still had all of the air in it when I changed it. I sent the tire back to cooper tire company at their expense along with pictures of the damage to my truck. Cooper inspected the tire and determined the air pressure had been low, apparently for some time, and denied my claim. This load range e tire has a maximum inflation of 80 psi. The firestone / bridgestone - Ford court case apparently has given tire manufacturers a green light to manufacture defective tires and any problems associated with these tires are blamed on the consumer not keeping the tire pressure at maximum psi.

53 Tire Tread/belt problem of the 2000 Ford F-250

Failure Date: 08/15/2005

While pulling my fifth wheel trailer, at 5:30 a. M. , 68 degree temperature, traveling at 55 to 60 miles per hour, the right front tire tread separated from tire and bent the right front fender, broke the right running board, and damaged the bumper. The tire remained inflated. I sent the defective tire to firestone/bridgestone and they said the steeltex r4s, lt 265-75r16, had been under-inflated, causing overheating and the subsequent separation. They would not replace or repair anything in this situation. I do not agree with them in regard to the inflation pressure that they say caused the separation. I am very conscientious about maintaining tire pressure due to towing a 10,000 pound trailer. The pressures maintained were 55 psi(no trailer weight) and 75 psi(with trailer weight). This is very important and I am offended that they would claim otherwise. I replaced the defective tire and have it and the other three tires available for testing.

Tires were purchased in December, 2001 from a goodyear dealer. Tires have recently separated (two front tires last week) (two back tires this week). No blowouts have occurred; however, we were lucky. Goodyear agreed to replace the tires for us at a discounted price, which price was figured based on the "life left on the tire". They had no knowledge of this recall and now we are out of $232. + for the replacement of the first two tires. They are currently in the process of replacing the second two tires at a rate of $96. 00 a tire.
