Failure Date: 07/06/2007

Sidewall blowout on general-grabbertr 235/85-r16---- good tread only 24203 miles on them-- came as standard equipment on 2002 Ford f350---after close inspection of other 5 tires --there are sidewall separation defects (bumps) in all of them --thanks to the grace of god and my husbands physical strength and knowledge of what to do in case of a blowout we escaped unharmed-- by the way we were on I-40 in tennessee towing a living quarters horse trailer with a horse-- the blowout damaged the front fender and we had to be towed -- I would like to warn others drivers of the danger-- judging from the complaints I found in my research I think this is a problem that needs further investigation-- I do not believe this to be an isolated incident.

There was a recall of the same tire for the same problem) by kumho manufactured between January 2005 and deceember 2006. The potential for blowout was the reason for the recall. Goodyear wrangler ar oem tire passenger side front had blown. Tire sidewall completely split and shredded. Fortunately, I was in the right lane and able to guide truck to the shoulder. 27 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2001 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 05/06/2004

Tire tread separation firestone steeltex radial a/t 265-75-r16 load range e dot number vnw81xl4600. While driving eastbound on us-60 just past the florence junction interchange with my spouse and infant child in the vehicle, the left front tire suffered a tread separation causing the tire to explode and go flat. Noise from the tread departing the tire was heard seconds before the tire ruptured. Handling was difficult while the tread was separating and became more difficult after the tire lost air pressure. The vehicle was pulled from the right lane into the left lane and nearly departed the roadway. Significant damage occurred to the vehicle. Repairs are at $3700 and rising not including tire replacement. The tires are rotated regularly according to the vehicle manufacturers 5-tire rotation schedule and a visual inspection of the tires minutes before the failure revealed that no tires were under-inflated. The Ford dealer replaced one of the tires when the vehicle was only a few months old because of pulling. After the first tire rotation, the vehicle pulled in the opposite direction indicating that at least one of the new tires was defective. Tread wear is very mild on the tires with approximately â½ inch of tread remaining. Sidewalls on the tires show dryness but a failure did not appear imminent. Mileage is just over 32,000. It seems obvious that a manufacturing defect caused these tires to fail well before tread wear was at a hazardous level. It is surprising and disappointing the NHTSA has not ordered a recall of these tires when research on the NHTSA web-site indicates several failures similar to tires that were previously recalled. If these tires were common on sport utility vehicles instead of long wheel base pick-up trucks and excursions, they would have been pulled from the roadways long ago as other firestone products have been. At this time, firestone has not warranted any of the tires as the vehicle is still in the repair shop.

28 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2002 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 12/25/2003

I had just pulled onto the the interstate after filling up with gas. I was driving my 2002 F-350 and pulling an 18 foot featherlite horse trailure. The trailure was empty. At the time I was traveling about 65 mph. All of a sudden I heard an extremely load roar. At the time I thought it was the engine so I let my foot off the gas and began to slow down. At between 40 to 45 mph I felt a violent jerk on my steerng wheel. I started to move off the freeway and could feel a violent vibration as if going over a wash board (it was not the ridges boundering the freeway). Of course when I hit those the vibration was even worse. I slowly applied my breaks and got the vehile under control and came to a stop. When I got out I could smell rubber smoking. When I went around to inspect the rig the right rear tire was compltey shreaded. The outside side of the tire (white wall)was 100 percent shreading and completely severd from the wheel. The inside side (black wall) of the tire was 15 to 20 percent severed. The tire was the firestone steeltex at (lt265/75r16, made in canada, dot number vnw81xl 3601, 2ply, load range e). They were original equipment with 47. 000 miles on them. Personal note: I believe that the reason I did not have a more serious accident is becasue the roar I heard allowed me time to slow down. Additionally, in this case, I believe the trailure breaking system assisted in keeping me going relatively straight until I was able to gain control and bring rig to a stop.

29 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2002 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 10/06/2003

I now have bought 2 sets of parnelli jones dirt grip tires. I have had 2 inside sidewall blowouts with these tires in the last year. Both times, I have had a large load on the tires, carrying a camper and driving at highway speeds. Both times it has been a rear tire. The first time the manufacture told me it was tire pressure, or I hit something. The first time, I was sure I did not hit something and had proper pressure. The second time I am sure I did not hit anything and had correct tire pressure. This truck has never been used off road, these tires were purchased for the looks only. This is a very dangerous situation if anyone with large loads uses these tires. I do not think the load rating on these tires is correct. Someone might get killed.

Failure Date: 04/25/2002

There's a separation on the side of the tire. General tire, 17235/85r16. Four out of six tires had sidewall separations that were serious. Ford finally declared four of the six as being defective and replaced them. Cosnumer was having the vehicle checked when the claims adjuster pointed out that the two front tires had tread separation deep enough for a dime to fit 1/8th of an inch. The separations were two to four inches in length. The two outer back tires also have tread separation but not as deep as the front two. Ford trys to characterize the defects as unusual tread wear. The defects were actually sidewall separations. Consumer was only partially reimbursed for the defects.
