Extreme shuddering and jerking. Clutch is not shifting into gears. This car is a hazard. Complete lemon.
Vehicle automatic transmission fails to shift gears causing stall, severe shudder, inability to accelerate through intersections and onto highway on-ramps. Dealers refuse warranty service to repair clutch assembly. Dealers acknowledge fault due to precisely same mechanical problems with 2012 Ford Focus models that are subject to recall, but for this 2013 model dealers require repair cost of $1,300 to $1,600 for parts and labor. Vehicle has only about 65,000 miles. Problem started circa 11/5/2018 and persists intermittently. Review of Ford Focus blogs and owner comment websites indicate problem well-known and ubiquitous.
The vehicle was in motion, on a highway when the vehicle jutted. Later, on a country road the transmission failure notification popped up. When sitting in a drive thru a hill start assist mode not available notification popped up and the vehicle would not move. It was as if the vehicle could not switch gears. I had to restart my car for it to move. This happened again when I had to stop again and I had to turn my car off and on a couple times before I could get my car to move.
At 19,459 miles, car hesitates and sputters while pulling out from a stopped position. Dealer attempted a fix: (faulty clutches) at 38,712 miles, same problem. . . Same attempt at a fix. (faulty clutches) at 57,662, same problem. . . Dealer replaced "clutches". On July 9,2017 at 66,558, car stopped on the street while being driven, would not go in to gear at all. The problem escalated from difficulty pulling out into traffic to car stopping in traffic. I have invoices for "repairs" to clutches. Vehicle towed to dealer . Faulty clutches ?.
Check engine light is constantly on and the engine leaks oil. The transmission does not change gears, shudders excessively and lacks power going uphill.
The powershift transmission is junk. This car has left my daughter on the side of the road several times. There is a class action lawsuit against Ford for this problem. Unfortunately it protects the first owner more than the used car owner. The care will not go into gear at all or only in first. The check engine light comes on for overheating. Since we have had the car it has been in the shop 3 times and we have had the clutch replaced and the previous owner had the same thing happen, which we didn't know until we bought the car and it started having problems.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift gears without warning. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was repaired; however, the diagnosis and repair were unknown. In addition, upon purchasing the vehicle, the tire pressure warning indicator illuminated. The technician stated that the indicator would eventually turn off; however, the contact mentioned that the indicator remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that an unknown chip needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 44,000.
Transmission does not shift into gears as it should ,no power going up hill. Sounds like motor going to fall out when you park. These happens several times and at different places.
Stopped in stop-and-go traffic on a major highway, when I attempted to accelerate again the vehicle flashed a warning which said "hill start assist not available" and the engine died completely. I lost all power to the wheels and lost power steering, was able to coast to the shoulder, where the car would not start. All warning lights appeared to come on, including seatbelt, check engine, traction control, etc. The car indicated it was in "drive", in spite of the fact that I had the gearshift in park. It would not shift gears or allow me to start the engine. After sitting for 30-40 minutes waiting for a tow truck, the car suddenly appeared to function normally. I drove home, and 10 minutes later, while parallel parking, the incident occurred again: backing into a parking space and attempting to pull back out, going uphill, the exact same sequence of events occurred ("hill start assist not available", loss of power and steering). This time the vehicle coasted backwards into another car. No injuries or damage. The 2013 Ford Focus cannot be trusted to be driven on the highway. I have read many reports online of other drivers having identical or very similar issues with hill start assist/transmission/traction control errors, loss of power, loss of power steering, and inability to shift gears or restart the car, with this error sometimes happening *while driving at highway speeds* resulting in loss of control of the vehicle. I do not feel safe driving this car. I feel less safe knowing that Fords with this problem waiting to happen are being driving every day by unknowing drivers. This is a safety issue of the highest magnitude. It is absolutely outrageous that Ford has issued no recalls.
The transmission would not go into gear while I was in dangerous traffic. The transmission stopped functioning with no warning whatsoever. It scares me to know this could happen at any time, during any driving condition. Yet it is what I own. I thought the car had an automatic transmission when I purchased it. I was wrong it is an automated manual. This occurred around 32k mileage. The dealer fixed it, but would refused a repair receipt when requested. I was lucky I was on a city street when the incident occurred. Had I known, I would never have purchased with my labor.
My car stalled going down the road at approximately 35 mph upon attempting to accelerate the vehicle revved to the red limit, and would not go into gear. I was thankfully able to pull to the side of the road and get myself and my child to safety by rolling in neutral. Ford motor company has had thousands of complaints about the transmissions in these cars stalling or completely malfunctioning while driving yet there has not been a recall on them. My infant was in the car! had I been entering a highway or something the results would have been terrible. All the company will do is extend the warranty to 100,000 miles and then we as consumers are screwed. Basically they "fix" it until the warranty is up. This is not acceptable or safe in any way.
Car would not start, would not go into gear. Clutch has been replaced twice. Car shuttering on acceleration in low gears and hesitates when changing gears and sometimes lurches.
The car started experiencing very rough shifting problems after the it reached operating temperature. The car has been to the dealer twice and it still experiencing shifting issues, hesitation, surging, shuddering, vibrating. The only time the transmission is smooth is when the car is at a constant speed and is not shifting gears. I purchased this car so that I could hand it down to my daughter. I'm not going to be able to do that with these issues. It is not safe for an inexperienced driver to operate.
Was driving up my driveway which is fairly steep, the engine slipped out of gear (it's an automatic transmission) and started to roll backwards down the hill, the engine was revving/redlining as if it were in neutral. I quickly applied the brakes, and stepped on the gas. The car was still not in gear and continued to roll back, I applied the brakes again, and then the gas at which point the car shot forward, lucky that I was far enough away from the garage or any objects and remained in gear when I pulled into the garage. This same thing happened to me on flat ground in a parking lot one day. The lurch was less, but the car still shot forward faster than it should have, another instance where I was lucky that there were no pedestrians/cars/objects to run into. This car is dangerous and a liability.
During a road trip while on a highway onramp going mostly straight at gradual acceleration, experienced complete failure of the computer system, beginning with erratic changing of gears rocking me back and forth in my seat, to infotainment display shutdown, to engine stopping. Had to exit highway and 'reboot' the system to continue travelling. After initial repairs, still experienced harsh gear shifts up to and including present day. Gear shifts could easily affect the control of the vehicle. To my understanding, the fault is how the computer uses the dual-clutch system to shift gears. I have been told that at times, the car did not know what gear it was in. There have been multiple recalls regarding these issues with this and other Ford models with this clutch system. There are other work reports, but I was unable to fit them within your upload limitations.
