I will begin with my concern and then proceed to give you my back story. I was almost involved in a very real broadside collision with an 18-wheeler and another Ford f-150 about two weeks ago. I was making a left turn with oncoming traffic when the vehicle failed to shift into second gear through the turn. The best way I can describe this is the feeling/noise we've all had learning to drive with a manual transmission and you miss the gear. The vehicle was stuck in neutral and the engine was reaching the rev limiter. I thought I was going to die. I'm very fortunate in the fact that the oncoming vehicles were able to come to a complete stop. I had to put my car in park, then put it back in gear to get it going again. The car just reached 55,000 miles and I've had to bring the vehicle in for warranty work on the clutch assembly five times since purchasing the vehicle. I have been told by the various service managers both to drive the hell outta the thing to wear in the clutch properly. I've been conversely told to drive like a grandma in order to wear in the clutch properly. I have spoken to the service manager about my safety concern and he states there is nothing they can do at the dealership level and encouraged me to reach out to Ford consumer affairs. His next offer was to sit me down with one of the salesman in order to get me into something better. I'm not in a financial position to get into something better. I had planned on keeping this car for another 2-3 years at least. This would get me through school and as my income potential increased, I planned to trade my Focus towards a larger vehicle. I want to reiterate that I do not feel safe driving my car, especially with a baby in it. The car continues to jump out of gear, leaving the vehicle powerless at random times, despite recent clutch replacements, especially in the cold weather.
Tl the contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. While driving at any speed, the gear shifted out of first gear and an unknown warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle stalled and was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle failed to start and was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the computer system failed and the transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failures. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was not provided.
Ever since we bought this vehicle it has lost power during acceleration, slips out of gear regularly, when stoped on an incline the vehicle will roll back approx 3ft before the transmission will catch almost hitting vehicles behind me. It has always had this terrible shudder coming out of 1st gear. This is an automatic dual clutch transmission. I will not let my children ride in this vehicle because I feel it is unsafe and it would not be ethically right to sell it to someone else.
7/15 driving north bound on cline (highway) and while my Ford Focus slipping out of drive in to neutral. Couldn't get my car to respond at all or get back in drive so I pulled off to the shoulder.
Multiple transmission repairs/issues including shudder, slipping out of gear while moving, bucking. In 3 specific incidents, the car slipped out of gear while in motion in an intersection in heavy traffic. Car was sold as an "automatic" but it was not disclosed that it was a computer controlled manual. Dealer says car is performing as designed performed some non-specific update.
The transmission is known to be faulty. Mine studders when going from first to second when taking off from a stop like someone who can't drive a manual. My 01 Focus is a manual. It has slipped out of gear multiple times on me and friends driving it in intersections, and highways. The car is 5 years old. Should not have these problems. I fear it will wnd up causing harm to myself or others. It needs to be addressed and fixed.
My 2014 Focus dps6 transmission under normal acceleration refuses to shift out of first gear until it hits high rpms (around 5000rpm), pauses, then lurches forward shifting up into a gear with a low rpm in the 1000s causing further issue and delay accelerating. This began happening on a city street, accelerating from a stop. While it did not cause an accident, it is clearly very dangerous as the pause and subsequent lack of rpms has placed me in bad situations where my ability to react is delayed and I am unable to rely on my vehicle to accelerate consistently or as expected. This is in addition to the more typical shuddering and delay during acceleration nuisance which is common among this dps6 transmission. The subsequent service invoice is attached, can also provide video of the issue.
There car has a tendency to slip out of gear in first and second gears. When you start to drive, the car acts like it does not want to move and then will suddenly sprint forward unexpectedly. Other times, the car will start to move as expected but it will be very jittery and jerky bouncing you around while it gets up to speed leading to unsafe operating conditions. This has been an ongoing and daily problem since purchasing the vehicle. Ford has said these are "normal" in conversations with my dealers and have not looked at the issue in detail.
I bought this car new in December 2014. Since I had no experience with this dual clutch transmission, I did not recognize the clutch was bad on test drive. It shuttered in first and second gear and shifted out of first gear in an unusual way. After about a year, I asked the dealer to check it out. The clutch was bad and replaced. It worked beautifully. A year later, I was back for a second new clutch. Now about a year later, I am back for a third clutch. The car only has 25,900 miles on it. The dealer has been great but I won't be able to keep this up after my extended warranty expires. The car has always been unpredictable with acceleration. Note to everyone, don't pull out in front of someone with one of these cars. You may or may not get a proper response from the transmission. After I had the car a year, my wife went to test drive a new Mazda for herself. We were in my Focus. The Mazda dealer told me up front they would not take a Focus on a trade-in because they've had too many that had to be taken to the Ford dealership for repair after they traded for them. So, they made a decision not to take any more on trade. This is very telling. The government should force Ford to recall this transmission and replace them with better ones. It is not fair to the consumer that they've been stuck with dangerous junk. I'm a Ford guy all the way, but his transmission is the worst.
Transmission at highway speed jumps out of gear. Had Ford look at it and they would not even drive it just put it on the computer and said its fine. Also it slips when pulling out. Worst car that I've owned never buy another had 2007 with no issues.
Transmission problems since the day I purchased it(3/31/2014). It hesitates from a dead stop or in motion, shutters when accelerating from a stop. Slips out of gear from a dead stop or in motion. After I brought it in for a recall (1/18/2017) it now slips out of gear and dealer says it needs a new clutch for $2,000 when it did not have that issue before the recall. I drive 95% highway. Car has 76,000 miles on it. It's an automatic. I've had multiple cars with automatic transmissions in them and they had over 200,000 miles on them with no issues. I believe this transmission is defective and Ford needs to replace it. I have brought the car in several times beginning with the first week I had it with transmission problems. It would have been in a lot more but they stated this is normal. I now have a car I can't drive nor have $2,000 to fix it. I take very good care of my cars and expected this to last longer than 3 years before a major repair. Now with this known issue, my $30,000 vehicle that I paid for only 3 years ago is only worth about $6,000 on a trade in. I still owe $12,000 on it. How is this normal or fair. Repairing a defective transmission is not a solution since it will fail again. It needs to be replaced. Is it true that Ford knew about these defective transmissions yet still installed them? this is not fair to us as consumers to knowingly be sold a defective unsafe vehicle. Please consider placing a recall on these vehicles as they are unsafe to drive in their current condition.
I purchased this car new and the transmission has had issues from day one. Transmission chatters, surges, and jumps out of gear and then bangs back in sitting still or driving. The vehicle only has 21k miles on it. They have done numerous updates to make them work properly and they still don't work. I am 61 years old and have been a car enthusiast my whole life and this is the most dangerous transmission I've ever owned. I had told Ford service 6 months after I owned it that this transmission should have never been put in a production car. Of course nobody cares, everybody got there money now. It's a shame people have to die to fix a problem that everyone that owns one and including Ford already knows exists.
