2 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem of the 2012 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 01/03/2021

The power steering has failed on this vehicle 4 times in the last two years. In every case, it failed while driving. Three times on the highway and once in local traffic. When the power steering fails, it takes an enormous effort/strength to make a turn, change lanes, or park. Two of the times the power steering failed, the mechanic was able to clear the codes and the power steering was restored. The other two times required expensive repairs. One (October 2020) was for almost $1700 and replaced the control rods and tie rods. This restored the power steering for two months, then it went out again. Resetting the codes worked for two days, but then the steering went out again. The rack and pinion and control board were replaced in February 2021 at a cost of just under $2000. Loss of power steering when underway is a known issue for cars of this make and model, and there has been a recall affecting some 393,000 vehicles, but not all vins. Though my issue is exactly as described in the recall, Ford maintains that my car is not covered. Checking online, I see that many others are in the same situation. Their Fusion has exactly the same power steering issue as the recall, but Ford says their VIN is not one of those recalled. It is clear that a larger number of vehicles were affected than first believed, and all those affected by this problem should be included in the recall.

4 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 11/12/2020

My power steering assist quit working while driving on a city street just after exiting the highway. Fortunately I was able to get the vehicle home witout incident. I've read various complaints regarding the same from other 2010 Fusion owners. I took in for repair and was quoted $1600. 00 to repair. The car is most likely not worth that much but I can't afford a new one or fix this one. I've religiously maintained the vehicle brakes tires tie rods etc. And now I have scrap it because it's not safe to drive. I'm hoping that this issue with my Fusion is something that will be recalled.

6 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 08/10/2019

When I started up the car & was going to pull out the light for passenger air bag came on, then I turn my wheel & there is like a grinding sound. I pulled on side of road & had someone come check it. They said same thing I did. I thought it was something rubbing against the tire, but when we looked there was nothing. Then he kept turning the wheel & it sounded more in the steering column. My husband checked underneath the car when I got home & thank goodness he did because the tie rod ends inside & out were so bad that I was lucky to have not of crashed. Still the steering is making that loud grinding, screeching sound. Air bag & trac lights come on occasionally still also. Really feel unsafe driving my car here the last few months. Ive had it parked for the last month & bought just something to get around for now til I can afford to have it fixed or they have a recall on these. Ive seen so many other people with same problems & I also seen they recalled the 2011 for same issues. Why not the 2010?????.

The front driver's side tie rod end has began to start a popping noise and must be replaced due to imminent failure of steering which could result in loss of steering while driving creating a crash that could cause serious injury and in some cases death. I do not drive the car because of this popping and I will wait until a recall.

10 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem of the 2011 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 08/07/2018

I took my 2011 Ford Fusion to the Ford dealership in harlingen TX. They verified the vehicle was up for recall since it has not been repaired. The mechanics took the car in and repaired the car after 7 days of dropping it off. On day 7 they called me that it needed a tie rod which I purchased and delivered first hand. 2 hours later they called me that I had to pay $1,300 because the car was not up for recall and that if I didn't pay they would be putting my broken part back on and releasing the car to me. I went on to complain to the manager and they managed to take $500 out for the repairs they have done that were supposed to be up for recall. I waited 7 days to find out I was being charged for a service that was supposed to be free. Recall number 15no1 and 15no2. I have recite and video of the confrontation. I had already wrecked the car due to the steering issues. I also repaired the damaged after the accident to later find out it was up for recall!.

11 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 06/28/2018

While driving to work the morning of June 28, 2018 the power steering in my car stopped working. I almost couldn't control my car. Was able to get it to the mechanic that afternoon, who then informed me that the entire eps system had failed and would have to be replaced. I then got a call the next day stating that in order to replace it that I also had to replace both tie rods due to the being attached to the eps system. After speaking to someone at a Ford dealership they told me that they thought this was already under recall. Luckily when I was driving I was only going 25 mph in my neighborhood, if I were going any faster it could have cause a serious accident.

12 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 06/01/2017

Power steering assist failure message appeared in gauge console and power steering went out while driving. The issue was not isolated to driving any speed as it would go out at high and low speeds as well as when attempting to pull in or back out of a parking spot. For awhile it would clear by pulling over and powering car off then back on. The message now stays on always and steering car is vey difficult. Now it also says an issue with advancetrack as well. My mechanic has told me I need new rack and pinion, tie rods, and an alignment to fix issue. I see an open investigation and that this is a common problem with many other 2010 Ford Fusion owners so I wanted to add my voice to this issue as well.

13 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 11/15/2016

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. While driving 60 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering service and traction warning indicators illuminated. The contact called sheridan Ford sales (4001 kirkwood hwy, wilmington, DE 19808 (302) 999-0261) for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired due to the cost. The contact stated that the failure continued and the vehicle pulled to the right and left while driving various speeds. The contact had to turn off the ignition, wait a few moments, and restart the vehicle in order for the power steering to return to normal. The contact attempted to add power steering fluid, but discovered that the steering was electric. Several months later, while driving out of the driveway, the vehicle began to bounce. The contact exited the vehicle and noticed that the front passenger side tire was turned inward. The vehicle was driven back to the contact's home and, while inspecting the front wheels, she noticed that the front driver side tie rod was fractured. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or dealer for diagnostic testing or repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the failures. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

14 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem of the 2013 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 03/31/2015

Started up the vehicle in the morning after sitting all night, buzzers, warning lights and messages popped up on the instrument cluster. "hill assist not available" "service advance trac" two light are also illuminated, traction control and stability control. The short 3 flash signals work but the sustained flash will not, the signal will flash once and shut off. The biggest safety concern is the power steering assist does not work. It will actually jerk the steering wheel in the opposite direction! unfortunately I had to drive the vehicle 40 miles to work. It grinds and pops as the wheel is turned like it is trying to rip the tie rods loose. I am automotive savvy and felt I could handle driving it, however if my wife was to drive this vehicle I would fear there would've been an accident.

15 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem of the 2013 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 11/14/2013

Vehicle driver was driving on a public road approximately 35 miles per hour when a thud was heard and the right front of the vehicle went down similar to having a flat tire. The driver stopped the vehicle as the steering and braking was adversely affected. After getting out of the vehicle and seeing what happened the driver saw that the right front wheel was out of its normal configuration with the wheel at approximately a 45 degree angle with the top of the wheel pointing inward toward the engine and the bottom of the wheel point outward toward the right. After a tow vehicle was called and picking up the vehicle, it was discovered that the right front aluminum lower control arm broke straight across where the lower ball joint was pressed into the control arm. This caused release of the lower axis connection of the wheel spindle and broke the right front driveshaft , tie rod, and bent the strut. This is a catastrophic failure of the lower control arm with potential to cause serious injury to the driver and any other vehicles or pedestrians. Ford is trying to disclaim and play down this failure saying that is not the fault of their defective lower control arm. I feel all vehicles of this kind have the potential to fail in the same way and should be immediately inspected for signs of cracking on the lower control arm.

16 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 04/22/2013

Will driving down interstate 64 in kentucky I hit a rough expansion joint while crossing a bridge entering into west virginia afterwards the dash warning lights lit up with traction control light on and also telling me to service power steering. I also noticed a loss of power and could not gain any pressing down on the accelerator pedal. I released the pedal and pressed down again and gained power but did not have any power steering. I exited at the fist exit and pulled into a fuel mart to check under the hood to see if I could find a problem to which I couldn't. Then I had a friend who is a mechanic check it and he said Ford had a problem with power steering and it was a very costly repair but I could probably continue to drive it locally but with caution. My arms have increased in size due to the muscle needed to deal with the hard steering. Well the other day the steering went completely out upon inspecting it we found the tie rod end on the drivers side had came loose and was completely stripped of threads to which it attaches to the steering rod. We replaced it and also found the other side was loose to. We need help NHTSA this is a big safety problem and not just a local one, please order a recall! erod.

17 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 03/28/2013

My car has been making a weird hum/grind/low pitched roar noise for quite some time now. I took it in, it will cost 1,800 dollars to replace my power steering rack. But- apparently you cant just buy the rack, you must buy the whole kit (motor, tie rods, rack, clamps, you name it). Because its been redesigned! . . . I wonder why. Yet there is no recall. Fyi- if I didn't fix, the power steering would have soon failed, leaving me stranded.
