Ford Mustang owners have reported 98 problems related to manual transmission (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Mustang based on all problems reported for the Mustang.
Excessive vibration during deceleration - specifically when letting off the accelerator, but not pressing the brakes. The vibration is strong enough to vibrate the center console and the manual transmission shift lever. The concern is that this excessive vibration could damage parts or loosen components, eventually resulting in a complete transmission or driveline failure. This occurs every time the car is driven while decelerating. The manual transmission fluid has been replaced, which very briefly seemed to resolve the issue, but it the vibration returned in just a few days.

Our 2011 Mustang gt with 6-speed manual transmission has a terrible notchy shifter that I've complained about 2 times to my dealer. The first time they replaced the clutch, and the second time they replaced the transmission fluid according to a TSB from Ford. I read the TSB online and it says it's for cars with difficult shifting in cold temperatures (which isn't my issue) but they insisted this would fix it. Immediately, the shifting was worse and I'm having trouble getting the car into reverse, second and third. When you have to get out of the way quickly, you can't get the car in gear and this is really starting to scare me. The dealer claims there is no other fix available so I asked them to give me a new car (mine only has 1400 miles on it) and they said "no, they all do this" and implied I'm not shifting correctly, I've bee driving manual transmissions for 40 years. I know how to shift. This problem is all over the internet. Why aren't they recalling this before somebody gets hurt?.
2011 Ford Mustang gt. My wife and I were almost killed last night in this car. I was merging onto the freeway quickly into an opening and shifted 1-2 and then was unable to shift into 3rd gear. I tried to shift back down into 2nd gear and it was impossible. By the time I was able to get into any gear (4th) we had slowed so much cars behind me came screeching to a halt and I thought we were going to get rear ended. This car has been returned to the dealer 3 times for this issue. The last time they changed to a new fluid but that only made matters worse. This is dangerous plain and simple and my wife now refuses to drive or ride in it. There are a lot of youtube videos and websites devoted to issue with the mt82 transmission so I know I'm not the only one. These cars have to be recalled before somebody gets injured or killed.
Rough and hard shifting in 2011 Mustang gt manual transmission. Experiencing rough shifting in 1st gear and hard shifting in 2nd gear with grind sometimes. Almost got rear ended recently since I couldn't shift into 2nd gear in three attempts at a traffic signal. The reverse gear is also a problem. Requires pushing down to engage into reverse but sometimes pops into 1st instead of reverse and moves in the other direction and gives me a good scare every now and then. These transmissions are defective and can/will result in accidents.
New 2011 Mustang gt 1400 miles mt82 transmission is very difficult to shift gears 2-3, and 3-4 shifts. This is very dangerous as on numerous occasions I could not shift the car into gear and had to bypass 3 & $ gear and shift to 5th gear to maintain my speed. I recall is required here.
The contact owns 2011 Ford Mustang gt. The contact stated that while driving 100 mph, the vehicle failed to shift into 5th gear. The passenger side airbag sensor also periodically illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer and the manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 4,000 and the current mileage was 6,456.
Hard to shift when cold, grinds going into 2nd from 1st, grinds going into 3rd from 2nd, gets better warmed up,but still does it when warm,.
1. Normal driving in both cold and warm weather. 2. Rough shifting manual transmission. Occasionally unable to engage 1st or 2nd gear from a stop. Often unable to engage 2nd gear while moving. Has nearly caused me to be rearended at stop lights a number of times. 3. Ford has attempted to resolve the problem by replacing the clutch assembly and the transmission. Problem comes back about 2000 miles after service.
When going downhill in 2011 Mustang in 3rd or 4th get strong vibration in drive train along with rough gear shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. Rpm range is only between 2 and 3 rpm when going downhill. This has happen before but am noticing the issue is starting to present itself more and more for both situations. With only 1900 miles on the vehicle.
Mt-82 transmission has a constant whine sound through 2,3,4 gear and won't engage in 3rd after 5k rpms. 5th gear constantly grinds. Currently in repair.
I currently drive a 2012 Ford Mustang gt coupe (this site will not let me select a 2012 Mustang from the drop down menu, only 2011), purchased 3/11/11. It is currently experiencing a "clutch stay out" problem. It is a six speed manual transmission. When shifting from first to second gear at high rpm, the clutch will not release for the shift until the rpms fall back below a certain level. I am unsure if this holds true for all the gears as my car is still fairly new and in break-in and I haven't taken any gear past 5k rpm. That said, the physical experience goes like this, "take first gear past 3k rpm, shift to second, car bucks, rpms fall, second is then engaged, car lurches/lunges forward after the clutch "catches" and then it launches one forward unpredictably. " this has happened to me every time I have shifted the car into second gear after taking first gear past 3k rpm.

I had an issue today that was dangerous and had potential to cause an accident. My car's shift lever became stuck and wouldn't go into gear and I had to force it back to the neutral position while comming to a stop light. . The manual transmission in my 2011 Ford Mustang gt has been whining and grinding gears since the clutch was replaced due to a design flaw (only to get the exact same clutch assembly), and will be going back to the dealer March 29th to hopefully get the trans replaced (w/ the exact same trans that has all these known issues). I imagine this would happen again between now and when the car is taken to the dealer, this is my only and first brand new car, I shouldnt be having these dangerous problems, let along taking my brand new car to a dealership to keep getting repaired over and over again because the failing parts are just being replaced w/ the same parts only to fail over and over again. Ford needs to step up and replace this trans w/ an entirely different/dependable manual transmission. I have owned 7 Mustangs, and this brand new one has had more transmission/clutch problems then any car I have ever had. . Worse off its the most $$ I have ever spent on a car as well. . $30k. For parts that keep failing.
2011 Mustang gt, manual transmision grinds shifting into second gear. It is real bad when cold and gets better as it warms up.
I was unable to engage 2nd or 3rd gear while in heavy traffic and the shifter grinded while going into 4th gear. The lever was able to be moved back into 2nd and 3rd after but would occasionally grind just as it did for 4th gear. This has happened on more than a few occasions and Ford has as of yet been unwilling to properly address the issue. This feels like a safety risk for the simple fact that the car has issues doing what you tell it to do. If I can't shift into a gear in an emergency maneuver I may be unable to prevent an accident or worse because I'm unable to move my car I will cause an accident. Something must be done about this very dangerous behavior that I and many others are experiencing. The dealer has tried to help me but as they put it Ford has tied their hands. They have changed my transmission oil to a lighter weight to no effect. The car has been to the dealer 4 times for this issue with no resolution. The service manager has told me that as my car stands now, there is little he can do until Ford says otherwise. These issues persist hot or cold but are very noticeable in colder weather. Be warned!.
Vehicle transmission refuses to go in to reverse at times. Also grinds everytime while shifting in to 2nd gear from 1st gear, mainly while turning corners but also when going in a straight line. Transmissions performance does not improve after coming to normal operating tempature. Transmission is clunky and just does not shift properly. Not smooth, not new car like.
The 2011 Mustang gt has shifting issues. It is a manual transmission. When shifting into 2nd and 3rd gears, it grinds when cold. After it warms up, there are delays in power in 2,3,4 and 5 gears.
6 speed manual transmission hard shifting, also pronounced vibration on deceleration at approx 2500 rpm - 2200-rpm. Dealer claims is normal.
Occasional and sometimes severe shudder/vibration when downshifting, particularly when going down hill, felt throughout the car, seat and shifter. When it happens, it feels like the vibration is in the drivetrain area. Seems like it always happens above 40mph. The shudder/vibration closely resembles going over rumble strips. It can be unnerving as it feels like something is going wrong with the car! I have read forums and it seems like I am not the only person that has been experiencing this problem with the 2011 Mustang. This problem can be distacting as you drive and the vibration can not be good for the drivetrain. Some or all of these 2011 muatang manual cars have a problem and Ford must address this issue now!.
I have an issue with my 2011 Mustang gt with the 6 speed manual transmission where, intermittently, I have issues with shifting into 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear where I encounter resistance and/or a metallic grinding sensation and sound, making it difficult to shift into 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear.
When the outside temperature is in the 30's 1st to 2nd is very hard to shift into and from 2nd to 3rd is about the same. I have taking my car to gary smith Ford and the service advisor informed me that Ford aware of the problem and that the engingeers were working on the problem. That was 30 days ago and almost 2 rear ends and still no fix some times it is just better to go from first to third to avoid trying to get it into second.
When the ambient temperature is cold (below 35 degrees) 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears are extremelt difficult to engage. I have a manual transmission vehicle and have almost been rear ended twice when trying to engage 2nd gear in my new 2011 Ford Mustang. I have visited keith hawthorne Ford once for service since realizing the issue. They did acknowledge that Ford is aware of the issue but basically shrugged their shoulders about it. I called back yesterday to keith hawthorne's service department and there is still no resolution. I am extremely concerned about getting hit as all lower gears are difficult to engage in cold weather. Often I have just had to skip 2nd gear all together.
I originally took my 2011 Mustang to the Ford dealer with a complaint of very difficult 1-2 and 2-3 shifting in cold weather (below 30 degrees ambient temperature). Ford was aware of the problem (special service message 21661) and said there was no recommended solution. This was not a satisfactory solution to the problem, so I took the car back on March 24th, 2011and requested that they change the transmission fluid to motorcraft full synthetic transmission fluid, just to see if it helped. It made the problem less pronounced, but did not solve it. On April 4th, 2011 the dealership told me that Ford finally came up with a recommended solution for my problem and that I should bring the car in to have the transmission fluid changed to motorcraft dual clutch transmission fluid. The dealership changed the fluid, but I can't say for sure if the problem has gone away because it only happens when the morning temperatures are below 30 degrees, which hasn't happened since the fluid was changed the second time.
I have a 2011 Mustang v6 with the mt-82 manual transmission. The shifting in it during cold weather is difficult at best and won't engage gears without a grind at worst. Now with warm weather it is not as notchy but will still occasionally not want to engage into first gear and grinds or doesn't want to go into 2nd if you are making a left hand turn while shifting. While I haven't had any close calls as of yet I feel as though some of these characteristics could potentially cause a dangerous situation to occur.
6 speed manual transmission hangs when shifting from 1st - 2nd or 2nd - 3rd under acceleration. This has happened multiple times but began to happen soon after purchase. This is especially hazardous on the interstate when trying to merge into traffic from a stopped position. Barely avoided being rear ended due to loss of forward momentum.
Owner of a 2011 Mustang gt with 6 spd manual transmission. Have had problems with rough shifting since 2000 miles. Have taken it into Ford dealership 3 times so far. One time my transmission actually started leaking and Ford was able to fix the leak but not the shifting. Rough shifting occurs in 1st-2nd-3rd gear. Sometimes I get stuck at lights trying to force it into first gear. Ford has had techs drive it multiple times and they tell me its normal, thats as far as the investigation has gone. I have 10,000 miles on the car and the shifting is only getting worse. Taking it into a new Ford dealership to see if they will be more helpful in finding out what the problem is and actually fixing it. Very disappointing with the way Ford treats their customers.
Manual transmission is clunky and does not shift properly. Feels like the synchros are grinding especially from 1st-2nd gear. Have had the shifter pop out of gear which I find to be dangerous. It is worse when cold, but still has happened even when warmed up.
Rough, clunky shift, especially in cold condition.
I purchased my 2011 Ford Mustang v6 in Sep 2010. When the weather got cold (approx late Nov), I began to notice that shifting the manual transmission from 1st gear to 2nd gear when leaving home in the morning, or leaving work at the end of the day, engaging 2nd gear was very difficult. Whenever the weather was below freezing, and the car was first driven after cold start, it would exhibit this behavior. I brought my car to me dealer for this and another issue (known as "cold engine tick" - unique to v6). The dealer had difficulty solving the cold tick issue, but ultimately did. The dealer told me there was no TSB or ssm for the transmission issue and to check back periodically. Though I requested the dealer to document the complaint at that time, they did not. What scares me about this issue is the lag time required to shift into 2nd gear when pulling away from a red light with traffic behind me. Twice I was nearly rear-ended as a result of this (I can accelerate well in 1st, then suddently, I'm coasting to a stop while fighting to get the car into 2nd gear - by the way, the v6 does not have a skip shift feature). Only 2nd gear exhibits this issue, and only when the ambient temp is below freezing and the car hasn't been driven from more than about 5 miles. After about 5 miles it seems the tranmission warms and the difficulty shifting is reduced (though 2nd gear always has more resistance than the other 5 gears).
While driving my 2011 Mustang gt with a mt82 trans it continually grinds from 1st to 2nd gear even if you take your time and finesse it. . It has been doing this since I purchased this car with 400 miles on the clock, and in the cold weather forget it as you will never get it to work, it is a shame I had to purchase a winter car to drive and having to park a new car just is not right.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that while shifting from first to second gear at 25 mph, the gear shift seized. The contact also stated that the shift had to be forced into gears. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a dealer or mechanic to have the failure diagnosed. The failure mileage was 10,200.
I have a Ford Mustang 2009 v-6, I was in 2nd gear accelerating to pass someone, and gas pedal stuck to floor, could not do anything, put it in neutral, still did it. I finally turned engine off and everything was ok. Scared me, I am afraid to drive the car. Call dealership, says it does not know why.

I drive a 2007 Ford Mustang. At 7:00 am on my way to work my car decided to turn into christiene. : -). The throttle body or the accelerator decided to stick. The rpm's were racing. I burnt up the back brake pads and the rotors, of trying to get the car to slow down. I even tried gearing the Mustang down. When I finally got to a safe spot, I then turn off the ignition. I started it up to if sitting and resetting the computer would fix the problem. I pressed on the accelerator and the problem started again. I started the car three times and I got the same response. After setting for a hour and a half I pressed on the accelerator again. It was fine. I did immed. Took it to a near by Ford dealership to have them hook it to a computer. They said, "it show were the rpm were racing, but there was issue showing up. " they also told me that they could not get this issue to happen again while they had it and that they could not promise me that this issue would not happen again. I have spoken to a CO-worker and he has a 2006 Mustang and he said that his accelerator done the same to him. I drive for a living (a school bus) and I seldom get scared, but after that morning I am scared to drive my Mustang and never had something to scare me as bad. I believe with out my driving skills I could have had a terrible accident.

The contact owns a 2009 Ford Mustang. While shifting from third into fourth gear, the rpms suddenly surged all the way up, decreased to 6,000 rpms, and finally surged all the way back up again. The contact had to place the vehicle into neutral in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle is currently being diagnosed. The current and failure mileages were 1,000. Updated 12/07/09. The consumer stated the accelerator pedal became stuck on the floor mat. Updated 12/08/09.
Hard to shift into first gear of neutral from a stopped position on the v6 manual transmission on the 2000 Ford Mustang, also paint is bubbling and cracking on roof in multiple spots, have seen same problem with paint posted for all models Ford from 2000-20005.

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Mustang. While stopped at an intersection, the vehicle's gear failed and would not shift into any of the five gears. The vehicle had to be turned off. When the vehicle was restarted, the contact had to place the vehicle into second gear. The vehicle would not shift into any other gear. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that the slade and master cylinder, clutch pressure plate, gear shifter, and the shifter failed. The vehicle was repaired, but failed again one month later. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that the pilot bearing failed. The clutch slade cylinder and master cylinder were repaired. The failure recurred one month later at an intersection. The contact had to turn off the vehicle. When it was restarted, the contact had to drive in second gear. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that there were loose bolts in the pressure plate to the fly wheel. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer stated that an engineer would come out and inspect the vehicle. The engineer determined that the six torque to yield bolts failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for repair, but the failure still persists. The vehicle is currently not being driven and is at the dealer for repair. The failure mileage was 7,695 and current mileage was 15,150.
