I purchased new, a 1999, Ford Ranger, 4-wheel drive truck on November 16, 1998, VIN# 1ftyr11v3xpa42480. Today, I only have approximately 40,000 miles on this vehicle although I will be replacing the rear brakes a second time in nearly 3 years. In January of 2003, in rush-hour traffic on a snowy morning, I applied my brakes and knew something was wrong. I didn't feel the brakes catch and hold the way they should. Consequently, it took a longer distance for me to stop. Brakes are an extremely important component to my safety as well as the safety of all other drivers on the road. I took my truck to hanks garage, inc. (5928 ackley road, cleveland, ohio 44105, 216-883-0345). I was told that my rear drum brakes had not been working at all. In fact, the rear brakes had not been working at all for some time as was evident by them being completely frozen and rusted through. Also, the rear wheel cylinders were not working. My mechanic showed me how the springs and shoes were rusted and crumbled, felling in to pieces. That discovery was unsettling to say the least for a vehicle that only had 29,611 miles at that time. I am lucky that no one has been killed because of this obvious safety issue concerning rear brakes on these vehicles. At that time the trucks odometer read only 29,611 miles. Clearly there is a safety defect in this vehicles rear drum braking system. That defect is clearly a safety issue that should be addressed by Ford. Safety for the driver, passenger and others on the roadways should be a priority. Ford should stand behind their designs and safety quality. Today, again, I am having a trouble with the rear brakes. It seems to be taking me a longer distance to stop safely. This is the same problem that led me to take the truck into the repair shop in 2003. I have only put slightly more than 10,000 additional miles on my truck. My current mileage is 39,973. It is low mileage to have all the components rust and deteriorate a second time.

While braking any speed the brakes failed, resulting in extended stopping distance. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. Consumer had this problem with both a 1999 and 2001 Ranger, both on the right rear wheel. The right rear bleeder screw on both vehicles was sealed shut. The wheel brake cylinder was replaced and the air was taken out of the lines but the brakes still performed poorly.
Braking system problems. . . . Brakes have been replaced front and rear 4 times in less than 2 yrs. . . Blown wheel cylinder drivers rear 2 x. . . . Springs rusted drivers rear 4 times. . . . Rotors and drums replaced twice, pad and/or shoes replaced 4 times.
Driving a 2002 Ford Ranger with 19,831 miles, a loud noise in the back of the truck occurred, braking was impaired, the brake petal was going up and down. I was able to bring the vehicle to a stop avoiding an accident. On December 2, 2003, joe taylor Ford in seneca, PA , "verified concern found rear wheel cylinders froze, springs rusted, drums warped and adjusters frozen replaced all components. " in addition there was brake shoe failure. Staff at the dealership noted this was typical of 2002 Rangers and stated we were in serious danger in driving the truck. "this is a serious safety hazard and one that has been occurring frequently in Rangers and f-150's. " (per staff) in addition it relates to NHTSA item 620159 and 10002516. The premature failure of the drive shafts (which I have had replaced for loud noises, is probably being caused by rear brakes that are constantly on. I have also had this truck back to the dealership three times for a slipping transmission. The Ranger brake lining was inspected and it came off in chunks and the drums were warped due to heat. This Ranger is under its original 36,000 mile guarantee and I still had to pay for part of the repairs. This truck has a brake safety problem. Our truck has never been in the water and has always been garage kept. Brake cylinders and adjusters do not freeze in 19,000 miles unless there is a serious quality problem. We have dealer documentation to show what work was performed and the $58. 30 paid for brake shoes on this one year old truck. We tried to resolve this issue with three managers and they all said that is the way it is. I am very concerned for the safety of others with drive shaft problems. Please have their rear brakes inspected as soon as possible. Thank you.

While driving at 30 mph consumer depressed the brake pedal and pedal went to the floor without slowing down the vehicle. The vehicle eventually came to a halt, and consumer had vehicle towed to the dealer. The brakes were replaced twice. The dealer informed the consumer that all the brake hardware in the rear wheels rusted out, causing the rear cylinder to blowout.
2004 Ford Ranger truck customer states that the truck was under warranty when he brought the truck to the service department an complained about the brakes both times the technicians found nothing. Customer wants to be reimbursed* the consumer stated the front and rear wheels were never removed to expose the leaking wheel cylinders. Over a period of time, the following year, brake fluid leaked at a slow pace and dissolved the brake lining and caused all the other springs and componets to rust and break.
