I was driving at around 30 mph, 2 cars in front slammed on brakes, I was approximately 1 1/2 car links back and hit the brakes. Abs failed, airbags failed, and slid into car in front of me. I was on a city street going straight.

The contact owns a 2003 Ford Windstar. While driving approximately 35 mph, the abs, engine, and brake warning indicators illuminated. The failures recurred numerous times. The dealer diagnosed that the abs failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

The abs light comes on. Then the vehicle is fine for days then it comes on again for no reason. This problem has been infrequent and has only recently before more of a issue. Usually the problem goes away and does not come back for weeks. I went to the local advance auto so they could pull the code and identify which wheel was sending the code so I could narrow it down and replace parts as necessary. The codes pulled are followed. C1185, c1198, c1194, c1254,c1246, c1250, c1242, c1214 & c1210. That's right 9 abs codes came out. The 1st on is the problem c1185, the rest are failures at each wheels inlet outlet valves. When searching the c1185 issue I found 100's of complaints online for this issue and many dealership horror stories. Too many back yard hacks tell people to disconnect this or that, or pull the ecm only to have that not fix the issue and others telling how they were able to resolder the abs module connections and fix the issue. The one common problem that caused issues was having a dealership brake job done and then the abs systems fails the next day or following week. I have to say that I did not notice this issue after doing the brakes, but I did have them done prior to the abs system failures starting.
While investigating the 50 mph failure of the pcm module, and the ongoing off/on action of the abs module, I ran across what appears to be a mistake on page 43-3 of the fomoco "2001 wiring diagrams/windstar" manual (fcs-12255-01). I exchanged several emails, case # cas-4648613-l1x1r6 crm:03259000003405, with the Ford customer relations center about this matter until they told me to contact a dealer. I sent the questions to my dealer asking for correct information, but they haven't acknowledged my inquiry. What I suspect is all Windstar's on the road today may be operating with only one-half of the scp (j1850 pwm) network operational. Now that many of the defective abs modules are failing, are other Windstars in danger of engine failure at speed like ours? the two simple questions I asked fomoco are: 1) are you sure circuit 915 (data bus-) should be grounded at the abs module? 2) what is the proper termination for the Ford data bus (circuits 914& 915), 120 ohms, 650 ohms, 3k ohms, what and where?.
Abs light and traction control light illuminates after driving forward 150 yards. Heavilly salted chicago streets have caused corrosion under car. Suspect abs failure due to salt and water corrosion in electrical connectors. High amperage abs electrical wires could short- out and cause a fire; an environmental, polution and safety issue.
Abs light turned on again and goes off when vehicle is turned off. Light indicated that abs is failed, brakes become poor under this condition. Brakes do not stop Windstar well when light comes on all the time.

The abs and engine lights have been on my 2003 Ford Windstar for years. However, they were electrical misfires and did not affect the operation of the vehicle. It does now seem that the abs is failing. The car brakes normally at low speeds. However, over 30 mph it now seems that the brakes lock up and the car pulls to the right. I do not feel that the car is safe to drive, as it screeched and locked up when I was stopping at a red light.
The abs warning light comes on intermittingly. Ford dealer said that the abs module was failing, that it would work sometimes and sometimes not, until complete failure. Also told me it was safe to drive even if the abs system did not function. I had the funds to pay for the repairs, the Ford dealer seemed reluctant to do them, so they did not fix it.
Abs brakes failed to activate or operate as designed minor incident repair garage scanned vehicle dtc code 1185 and abs light on requires new abs ecu to repair abs system apparently a common occurence, poorly solder joint in ecu.
Brake and abs warning lights come on after several miles. Repair shop says, computer indicates abs controller failure, but once codes have been cleared, computer no longer indicated problem. However, a few days later, brake and abs warning lights come on again, and computer again indicates abs controller failure. And on and on.
Abs control module failure. Module is still defective, I have no abs brakes and cannot get vehicle inspected due to this defect, which is estimated to cost $1000 repair. . Read more...
Abs and trac failure lights come on, windows won't go up and down, cruise control cuts in and out and the check engine light flashes when cruise is on. Ford refuses to deal with this situation and stand by their product.
Braking distance suddenly increased, intermittently. Fault code shows abs ecm failure.
Abs system failure resulting in increased stopping distance.
Abs failure - 2001 Ford Windstar.
Extended braking distance and abs system failure indication. When warm and without warning abs failure warning indication is activated sometimes with a increase in braking distance. Dealer has not been able to pinpoint a cause. Warning will always clear when the car is turned off and restarted and sometimes during normal driving. This is on a 2002 Ford Windstar limited with traction control.
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that the abs system warning light illuminated while driving 5 mph. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic shop who ran a diagnostic test and informed the contact that two out of the four abs sensors failed. The manufacturer was contacted and she was advised that there were no recalls for the vehicle and offered no further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 86,000.
1999 Ford Windstar abs failure, braking distance suddenly increased.
Braking distance suddenly increased. The abs system failed. There was an intermittent electrical connection. The abs warning light would come on and stay on intermittently. The unit was replaced and the replaced unit failed at approximately 88,000 miles. There appears to be an issue with the abs control unit.
Abs failure, braking distance reduced. Traction contro off, effects safety of driving in slippery conditions.
The abs system fail and the car lost control.
2000 Ford Windstar abs light based on abs power relay failure, in association with previous recall. That recall was repaired by Ford (recall 09s09 was completed by Ford), but they did not address the abs light. Abs light with power relay (ecm) persists.
Abs failure Windstar 2002 code c1185. It seems to be a common problem that Ford is not doing anything about. I took my van to a dealer im having the abs module replace.
2000 Ford Windstar, abs module began failing at around 70000. The abs light on the dashboard comes on after the engine has warmed in winter or sooner during summer months. The module is poorly designed and not able to withstand heating and cooling. As a result, the module does not work as designed and does not provide the safety feature that anti lock brakes should.
Abs system failure on 2003 Ford Windstar.
Abs fails as weather gets warmer. Light comes on significantly increasing braking distance .
The abs light comes on my 2000 Ford Windstar. I have had it checked as it was acting intermittently. I was informed that every sensor and control module for the abs system failed according to the code. The mechanic said that this was not really possible however he believed it to be the control module. I had it checked again this year as the light comes on every time now and it is the control module on the drivers side under the van. I have driven vehicles for years without abs so it doesn't bother me to not have it. The cost to fix it is not worth it as the instrument cluster has also started to fail. The abs light acts up more during the warm weather/summer.
Ford Windstar abs failure. Abs fails due to heatsink expansion causing abs module to fail.
2003 Ford Windstar abs failure in warm weather only.
Brake and abs warning lights are on. Abs inoperative due to abs ebcm computer failure. Was quoted $1,000 from dealer to replace computer.
