Approx. , a year ago my abs module went bad and I had it checked by a mechanic to verify that fact. Just recently my speed control deactivation switch went bad and leaked,. Now I found out there is a connection between both the switch and the abs bad module. Ford does not have a recall on the abs system, but they do on the above switch. Very possibly the high cost of the module has kept them from having a recall!!! I have read complaints about the same problem from another Ford van owner. Also the switch was changed approx. 5 years ago and it went bad again. ( per a Ford recall then) there should be a definite recall on Windstar van abs systems and as a safety issue---Ford should replace the switch and wire harness again! . . Updated 08/12/14.

The computer for our antilock brake system on our 2002 Ford Windstar keeps going out, rendering our antilock brakes useless. This is, of course, a serious safety concern. This problem has been diagnosed by both an independent mechanic and a Ford service technician. Although this problem has been frequently reported by consumers as being related to a Ford recall on the cruise control system, and the Ford service technician expressed his opinion that the problem was related to the recalled problem, Ford refuses to replace or even subsidize this 850 dollar part.

Abs control module heats up and causes the anti-lock brakes not to function. I have see through research that this is a very common problem with these vehicles. I sent an email to Ford with my finding and was told that there were no recalls for this problem. I can not believe with the number of people affected that Ford continues to ignore this problem.
The abs system shorted out causing the harness and all the connecting wires to melt. I had no warning this was going to happen. My van started smoking, the odometer, speedometer, air conditioner nothing was working. Luckily, I was about 1/8 mile from my house when it happened and was able to pull into my driveway and shut the vehicle off. The van was in the shop from June 14 to August 28 because a part could not be found to replace the abs harness. The bill for the repairs was over $1,000. 00!.
Advance trac system activates for no reason, this causes the brakes to apply bringing the van to a halt. I have had this vehicle back to the dealer four times. Once they replaced the anti-lock brake module. Although this has occurred numerous times, they cannot find anything wrong. I am able to shut the system off and continue driving. This will happen shortly after I make a right or left turn and it is intermittent.
Exhibiting intermittent anti-skid brake system and red brake lamp on at times while driving.
The contact stated the traction control and the anti lock brake system worked together. This caused the brakes to be applied for no apparent reason. There was no warning ,and it happened to different wheels at different times. The vehicle has been to the dealership, and they made an adjustment to the system, but this did not repair the problem. The vehicle is being taken back to the dealership tomorrow.
Abs anti-lock braking engages during normal dry braking. This causes a lessening in braking just before a complete stop. Could cause a collision by not stopping car within the distance expected.

While applying the brakes abs braking system lightwill appear on the dashboard.
On two occasions the brakes in my 1999 Windstar failed. Both occasions involved damage to my Windstar. The first accident occured in November 2002 and in that accident two other autos were involved. In both accidents the brakes did not engage even though I stepped on the brakes hard. I told the dealer (koon's Ford in falls church, va) on both occasions that the brakes did not engage properly. They told me nothing was wrong with the brakes. I felt so scared driving my Windstar that I just traded it it at a big loss (us$4,000 trade in) for a new 2003 Toyota sequoa. I took possession of my new auto today 1/18/03). The brakes simply did not engage on these two occasions. While they worked fine at other times. This is a problem that needs to be looked into.

(excellent short form).
Car is currently at Ford dealer right now because of brake system. This problem began about 20,000. Whenever an emergency stop occurs, the anti lock brakes do not work. No repairs have n been made. Mechanic did road test the vehicle and found that the abs did not work.

Bugets uses as there repair person collins Lincoln - Mercury. No safety defect listed.
I'm having the abs controller repalced which left me with no breaks when it went out. The business which is doing the repairs said he has replaced this controller on other Windstars like mine. I can't belive that the break system has already failed after 3 years. I live in ne. Where there is not an ecessive amount of stop/go traffic. The abs system went out overnite. One day its good, next day no brakes what if I were driving down the highway when this part decided to go out? I feel that the brakes should last more than 3 years and maybe only need shoes in heavy conditions, not to have main components go out !!!!.
Brake pedal goes completely to floor. Vehicle stops, but if in an emergency consumer doesn't know if it will stop. Dealer test drove another vehicle and the same thing happened. Dealer stated that it must be normal because other vehicle did the same thing.
