9 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1996 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 12/01/2008

1996 Ford Windstar. Consumer requests a refund for money spent on repairs as a result of the problem described in a recall the consumer stated the vehicle had a brake fluid leak which damaged the abs module, closkspring and caused the cruise control not to work. The consumer stated in mid-late December she and her husband began to experience problems with braking and the abs light would come on and go off at random. Braking was sometimes interrupted by a shuddering which delayed the action of the brake after the brake pedal was depressed, as if the abs did not want the brake to engage. This happened during normal braking as well as a quick press of the brake pedal, but in either case the braking was prolonged. The consumer stated the dealer repaired the problem with a kit and she was reassured the brake leak was fixed and there should be no more problems and there was nothing wrong with the action of the brakes. Several days later, the consumer and her husband experienced the shuddering again while driving 65 mph. The consumers husband decided to purchase an abs module from an online dealer. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, who agreed to install the part. The problem with the abs light and shuddering has been resolved. When the consumer received the recall notice, he went to the dealership with the receipts from the repair, but was told his vehicle was not one of the years covered for a refund of previous repairs.

I have a 2003 Ford Windstar lx and the abs light and the brake light on the instrument cluster continually come on. I have had the front and rear brakes serviced and then after this problem did not go away I put a 2nd set of pads on the front. Ford want over $2000. 00 to fix what they say is the abs module. The brake gauge lights continue to come on and off at all times and Ford said it was due to this switch but it would not affect the brakes although at times the brakes will start skidding like the abs is working on dry roads and some times the brakes seem to work hard. Checking the internet out for parts I found several complaints about this same problem and even some vans catching fire due to this abs module switch catching fire. Ford has recalled several other vehicles for the same problem but will not acknowledge a problem with the 03 vans. I should not be forced to pay for a repair that Ford knows is there fault. The manufacturer of this abs module made them defective but Ford still uses them. . Read more...

On my 2001 Ford Windstar minivan, at about 62,500 miles on the odometer, the amber abs light and red brake light illuminated. Was told by the dealer that it was a faulty hydraulic control unit that was leaking brake fluid on the abs module (estimated repair cost was about $1,100. I had previously researched this problem online, and have found entire forums of Windstar owners dedicated to this problem. Users had cited a fire hazard that is created by the leaking brake fluid on the abs electronic control unit (one owners van had caught fire due to this on a long trip). I asked about this at the dealership, and they confirmed that this could indeed be a fire hazard. I have pulled the fuses to DE-energize the abs ecu, but because of that, am currently operating with no abs braking capability. The leaking fluid had also damaged the cruise control cutoff switch, so I had it repaired at the dealership.
