Abs light lit for 2 months. Brought to dealer who informed us the module "went bad" and our abs system was inoperative. The repacement part costs over $800. 00. Such a failure of a critical safety feature is worth looking at. An internet search turned up numerous reports of problems with the 2000 Ford Windstar abs system.

The contact owns a 1996 Ford Windstar. Two years ago around June 7 2003 while driving the van all weekend, when they got out of the van and walked into a store, were not into the store for 10 minutes and someone said that the vehicle on fire. Had problems with abs light coming on, and they tried to have this fixed. Were not successful in getting this fixed. The vehicle was totaled, and the insurance company covered it. She believed the problem was from the deactivation of cruise control switch. The fire started under the hood.

Experiencing intermittent abs and brake warning light. Ford dealer pulled computer code and got c1185 and numerous other codes. The diagnoses was that the problem was most likely the abs control module. They would not guarantee that replacement would fix problem so for the $700. 00 they wanted decided to investigate problem myself. Glad I did . It seems as if this is a very common problem on the 2002 Ford Windstar and has the potential to be a fire hazard. I am actually very surprised that Ford would not issue a recall or at least offer their customers a subsidized price to replace this defective abs module ($700. 00 seems very high for a small electrical component) not only because of the fire hazard issue but because this has to do with the brake system which is certainly a safety issue.

Hydraulic control unit and electronic control unit both had to be replaced with only 40,000 miles on the vehicle. This failure occurred suddenly and caused the vehicle to have very little brakes while driving. An accident was narrowly avoided. The cost to fix this problem was in excess of $1,500.

Email concerning safety issues with the 2001-2003 Ford Windstar, a leaky brake differential deactivation switch which causes brake fluid to leak down wires and the anti-lock brake computer fails during hot weather conditions. The consumer stated the issue is a large aluminum plate attached to the bottom of the anti-lock computer circuit board. When the plate gets hot, the aluminum expands whereby stretching the computer board and causing the anti-lock brakes to fail. The consumer stated he had a fire in his vehicle, as a result of a leaky brake pressure differential deactivation switch.
