I had my 2000 Ford Windstar's transmission serviced and when I picked it back up the technician pointed out to me that I am leaking brake fluid from a switch on the master cylinder. I was informed that this is very dangerous because the loss of fluid can cause my brakes to stop working. The technician also informed me that brake fluid is flammable and might cause a fire if it is not repaired right away.

Noticed that I was leaking some brake fluid for the last couple of months on my 1997 Ford Windstar but very little at that. About the same time the cruise control quit working. One day while driving I noticed a lot of smoke coming from under the hood. Raised the hood but the smoke had quit. Got back home and noticed this again when I was stopped in the driveway. Checked under the hood again and found that the cruise control deactivation switch was smoking and very hot. Went to the Ford dealer to check if there was a recall on this and there was not . Installed the replacement part with plug adaptor and this fixed the problem with smoking and the cruise started working again. Noticed on the net this same part that is in my Windstar is also in other vehicles that has been recalled. Why is this? this could have easily caught fire and been a total loss to the van and if it had been parked in the garage the house also.

My wife asked me to check the brakes because the brake light was on. I had checked the wheels for any leakage and found none. The master cylinder was low so I started to look for leak at other places and found the leak at the brake light switch. The brake fluid was leaking on the wires. So I looked on line and found a article that can cause a fire in the engine compartment. This why I am making this complaint. I as have lost my cruise control and the article said that this will happen. I am going to change the switch and replace the fuse if needed.
My 2002 Ford Windstar van had an inoperable cruise control. I traced the problem to a leaking (brake fluid) switch mounted under the brake master cylinder. The leaking switch leaked flammable brake fluid onto the hot engine or exhaust system but did not caused a engine fire. I purchased a modified switch and wire harness from the Ford dealer and installed it myself. I was told by the Ford parts salesman that there was no recall for my Windstar at that time. This is the same defect found on the other Ford vehicles according to the new york times, 18 April 2008. I still have the defective switch in hopes I can be reimbursed by Ford. The defective switch is available for inspection if needed.
