Dealership acknowledges an ongoing problem with master brake cylinders on 2000 Windstars; they have failed to correct the problem with customer vehicles already on the road, while focusing on correcting the design flaw of the brake cylinders coming off the assembly line. Vehicle has been undriveable for over a month, Ford has been slow in responding to dealership's request for replacement master brake cylinder. Three promised delivery dates have come and passed. Dealer reports other Windstar owners are also awaiting replacement master brake cylinders for 2000 Windstars, however, indications are that Ford is aware of a faulty design in the Windstar's braking system, and while they are currently correcting the problem on new vehicles coming off the assembly line, they have failed to,, in a timely manner, address a most dangerous issue in vehicles already on the road.

48 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 1998 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 01/04/1999

01/04/1999-- !998 Ford Windstar had approx 95% brake failure while wife and kids were driving. No warning or noise, just "mushy pedal" stopping vehicle at last inch of brake pedal movement. Autofair dealer service mgr experienced the condition. Repair was to replce master cylinder. 01/18/1999--the same brake failure occurred with the same discription of brake pedal. Condition of brakes was experienced by dealership again as well. Repair was to check all lines for leaks and bleed the air out of the lines. No reason given as to how the air got in the system. (remember master cyclinder replaced 13 days previous). 01/28/1999(Sunday) driving home from church, traveling approx 25 mph the brakes failed again causing me to go past the road I was going to turn into,no traffic. This was without warning, noise or warning lights. . 01/29/1999 autofair said to bring it back in again for repair. They kept it for approx 3 weeks and could not get the brakes to fail again in 300 miles of driving. They were unable to make a proper repair of the problem using their words, but had to give me my car back from orders from Ford regional rep mike holt who said even though Ford autofair service mgr had experienced the problem and they had not "repaired" the problem, (they only bled the brakes, no cause why this happened) and that the problem had corrected itself just as fast as it had occurred, the customer should have the auto back. We, along with the service dept and the vp in charge of Ford at autofair Ford have no confidence in this car and that the brakes will not fail unexpectedly again possibly causing injury to occupants/bystanders or other drivers.

We were told last oct 2001, it was a master cylinder problem, yet told they adjusted instead of replacing the master cylinder. We continue to have braking problems. The dealer humours me by checking them, informing us they are okay. I just had them checked again 2/22/2002, they informed me they had to adjust the e-brake. I am paying for a vehicle I feel far from safe in. What are my options??.

51 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2000 Ford Windstar

I experienced brake problems on three separate occasions within a 12 hour period with my 22,000 mile 2000 Windstar. I smelled a burning plastic smell for approx 10 seconds and thought nothing of it. I then had difficulty during a normal stop when the disc brakes seemed to be experiencing abs activity. The brake pedal wasn't fluttering like a normal abs stop nor was their any moisture on the road. This happened again 10 minutes later. The next day as I was taking it to the shop I made a complete stop and a couple of seconds later the car started moving forward. My full pressure was on brakes and it wouldn't stop. I used the emergency brake to stop. There was no fluid missing from the brake master cylinder. The brake pedal didn't move deeper as I pressed the brake. The tach didn't increase rpm. The shop checked the abs system and found nothing. There were no computer diagnostic codes found. They drove it 200 miles and couldn't replicate it.
