Most important is the brakes have been changed and checked. On several occasions the brakes have just failed and I would pump them enough just to get in a safe location. Aaa has had to pick me up and when the brakes where checked they were find and the fluid full. Also the rear just fell but I had that repaired by a local reputable shop on candler rd, decatur/ there is a residue all around where I put the gas in. I've had the same mechanic for almost 30 years and he says the anti-lock brakes may be faulty. The brake and engine light will not go out even when repairs are made according to the codes that come up. The scariest time was when I was driving on university Ave in atlanta and the car would not stop at the light at a normally busy intersection. I began blowing the horn and thank goodness no one was ahead of me. Aaa took their sweet time coming and by the time they got there the pedal was back up but I had them to tow me home anyways. My mechanic checked it and all was find but he was concerned and so was I. I did not contact Ford but it has happened again as I started it yesterday morning and the brakes were on the floor. This is just too dangerous. I told my mechanic not to come check it before contacting Ford.

The abs, brake and traction control warning lights in my 2002 Ford Windstar keep coming on intermittently. Brake fluid is normal and front brakes were recently replaced. Warning lights seem to appear when started after the vehicle has been sitting in the sun or after driving. I have not noticed braking problems but am worried that the brakes may fail when needed. Ford dealership says there is no known problem with the Windstar abs system. I have read several forums where Windstar owners are reporting the same problems. My vehicle has 63k miles.
The abs and brake dash warning lights intermittently come on, especially after the vehicle warms up or I hit a puddle and water splashes underneath. This has been going on for years. Firestone has inspected the vehicle multiple times and cannot find anything wrong. They are agains suggesting to flush the brake system and do an engine diagnostic (again at cost of $200). While there has been no crash or damage I am in constant fear that there will be as the brakes might fail but I'd never know it since the warning lights are almost always on and repair work hasn't been able to turn them off.
While driving at 75 mph front coil spring snapped and broke, puncturing the front drivers side tire. Consumer had the coil spring replaced once. This was the second time this has happened. The front end of the vehicle completely dropped. Also, there was a brake failure. Two NHTSA recalls regarding front coil springs, recalls 01i007000 and 01v199000 were issued.
While driving approximately 45 mph brakes failed to operate, resulting in a crash.
Transmission slow to engage after sitting. This is not only a repeat problem after being repaired, but also after being totally replaced by Ford dealer. Abs never recalled for scds 09s09. Constantly resetting and disengaging. After 15 years of ownership, I have yet to be notified of or had anything repaired under warranty. When the transmission quit working, my wife was driving ( when the rpm's went up and the transmission quit pulling) on a busy highway, in heavy traffic, no place to go. Nearly causing a horrific accident. With the abs problem, anything indicating a brake failure, possible onboard fire, or loss of control, leaves you with a huge lack of confidence in the vehicle.
Brakes failed five times within one year.
While driving at 45 mph brakes failed without warning, causing vehicle to collide with another vehicle.

To summarize, we bought a 2001 new Ford Windstar van on oct. 6 from courtesy Ford. The brakes failed on oct. 8, causing an accident with slight damage. The van was towed to a Ford dealership in wray, where they were unable to find a problem with the brakes. Ford, through their corporate office, offered an extended warranty of 5 years. They also stated that they had sent an engineer from denver to wray who was also unable to find a problem with the brakes. I have a signed document from the service manager in wray stating that no one has come to look at the van. Neither my wife nor I feel that this vehicle is safe to drive, especially since Ford has lied to us regarding their diagnosis of the problem. We do not feel comfortable putting ourselves and/or our grandchildren at risk when there seems to be no explanation for why the brakes failed initially. I have much documentation and a chronology of the events that brought us to where we are today. The most frustrating part of this whole deal is Ford's reluctance to even respond to our calls and letters. We simply want a vehicle that is free from defects. This is the first new vehicle that we have ever owned. Your service comes highly recommended to us and we would appreciate any help you can offer. I can be contacted anytime at the above number or on my cell phone (970) 630-3328.

(1) I had various problems with the braking on the van starting about 4 months after I bought it with. Nothing really lead up to the failures. (2) brakes would fail for no apparent reason. It was usually after I would hit a slight bump in the road while lightly applying the brakes. I would feel as the antilock brakes would kick on for no reason. The brakes would not recover until they were released and pressed again. Several times I would have hit someone if they were in front of me. (3) I sent many complaints to Ford, the dealerships, etc. There policy was if they could not reproduce the problem then they couldn't fix it. I could not reproduce the problem either. This would just happen out of the blue. I have had witness in the van when this happened. Ford denied two dealers from working on the van (even though it was under warranty) because the dealer could not reproduce the problem. About 6 months ago I replaced the shocks and tires on the van. This problem has not happened since then. I did everything I could think of to have someone help me with this problem. Talked to Ford, dealers, filled out similar forms on auto safety websites, etc. I am truly disappointed that no one ever looked into this problem. If this is happening on other Ford Windstar's then there are some very serious safety issues that need to be investigated.
Complete brake failure&stuck accelerator-backing up driveway with feet on brakes-accelerator pedal went down on own van wrapped around tree- reported brake problem on test drive-they fixed it,but no good.
Brakes failed and was unable to stop. Put vehicle in park while moving, and finally stopped on sidewalk, at a school where the problem could have been desasterious.
Brakes failed (when my wife was driving with our 6 year old son with her) with no warning, pedal went to floor and only slowed the van when your foot was all the way down. Brought it to two Ford dealers before they diagnosed that the abs/hcu is not working, replacement part and labor is est. At $1,400. Out of my pocket, plus I have been without vehicle for 3 weeks and counting, and had to have it towed. Also the first local garage replaced the master cyl in an attempt to fix it another $300.
