2 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2017 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 09/24/2018

While driving down a mountain road with a 5th wheel attached it appeared that the rear brakes on the drivers side were smoking, I pulled over to allow it to cool. We found a GMC dealership and proceeded there very slowly stopping a number of times to allow the brakes to cool down. 2 miles short of GMC, there was a loud pop and a tire had blown. We pulled over and while calling roadside assistance noticed fire under the truck. We put it out with a fire extinguisher before the fire department arrived. We were towed to the dealership. The brake caliper came apart, the rear axle broke (possibly melted from heat and fire?). Gm initially stated 4 days to repair, now they they are saying 3 weeks as they have to build a new axle. If we had not had the extinguisher the truck, RV and meadow would have all gone up in flames and who knows the disaster that could have occurred if this happened on the mountain road. This vehicle only has 17,000 miles, 11 months old and has had all routine maintenance performed at GMC dealers. I have more pictures but am unable to upload them.

3 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2017 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 09/30/2017

I had the rotors replaced on my new truck at 6000 miles and paid for repairs out of pocket. I continued to hear brake noise. On my way to the dealership on the weekend I was scheduled to have the brake noise investigated and to have an oil change done, I had catastrophic brake failure. A vehicle in front of me made a lane change into my lane and then slammed on the brakes in front of my vehicle at a green light coming to a complete stop from 40 mph to 0 in the middle of the intersection. A car had pulled out in front of him changing lanes from the left lane to right. I mashed the brake pedal to stop immediately and my brakes went soft and to the floor on the second push. When I wasn't stopping. I slammed my emergency brake with my left foot and injured a few toes on my left foot trying to stop before my vehicle. My vehicle did not come to a complete stop. Instead, my vehicle skidded and lightly tapped the vehicle in front of me doing minor bumper damage to both of our vehicles. However there was a Toyota truck behind me, and struck my vehicle directly while I was at a stand still, while the driver was doing over 70 mph when he collided with my Sierra. My Sierra has the pin or part of the caliper that moves the brake pads, completely pushed the piston into the rotor. The vehicle has had brake issues since I paid to have the brakes and rotors replaced at 6000 miles. I have records of the incident and the brake failure from a mechanic and auto body shop documenting the complete failure of the brakes. Directly after the brakes were replaced within another 8000 miles the brake booster on the vehicle went bad and was replaced as well.

4 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2007 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/19/2014

The contact owns a 2007 GMC Sierra 2500 hd. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to engaged. The contact had to use the electric brake from the horse trailer in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the brake lines were rusted. As a result, the brake calipers along with brake lines needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 36,000.

5 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 06/13/2014

I was driving down route 24 in lewes, delaware approaching a yellow light when the car in front of me stopped. I applied the brakes and they completely failed despite putting the peddle all the way to the floor. I was forced to veer onto the shoulder then into a farmers field in order to slow the truck down enough to force it into park. Apparently the hydraulic brake lines on these trucks are completely exposed to the elements and have a history of failing. Once that happens, the rear calipers lock up and there are no brakes at all switch can cause a crash. There is no warning given until the hydraulic line snaps and the fluid is released. My truck has never been in an accident and has low mileage for its age. It has always been well maintained and is not a work truck but merely a personal vehicle. In addition, I am on my third transmission do to the poor selection gm made of putting the s-10 pick up transmission in a substantially heavier truck.

6 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 02/10/2014

I own a 2000 GMC Sierra crew cab short box 4 by 4. I was driving down the road and heard a grinding sound, so I thought to limp it home. Bad idea, I was the two bolts that hold your caliper on, so that is your whole brake system, well it made my wheel lock up and caused me to loose control and hit the curb where I bent my rim and popped my tire, so I replaced the two bolts on driver back side and checked the passenger back side and those two bolts where loose. Very scary. So I tighten them both and like I said replaced the other two on the driver side. When I seen the way it was set up I was shocked because it was not a good idea and never seen calipers bolted like that, this happened three months ago well today I was driven and heard the same noise again and before I could stop all the way my tire locked up again but this time I was in control and stopped ok. I am freaking out because I have a five year old special needs daughter and don't want her to be in my truck if it decides to lock up and flip. So I went to the same auto shop and had it replaced again. Like I said I seen a lot of brake systems and this way they have it is not same and I imagine has caused deaths, if not yet it will, it about made me roll and screwed up my rims and new tires, I don't know if I should sell it because I do not have money to get them all replaced. So im going to see if there is a recall and if not there needs to be. My mom have a 2004 silverado chevy and I owned a 2002 before and both trucks brake system are different. I want to know why they are like this and why they change a good thing. I hope this was helpful. So if you hear grinding in tires make sure you stop and get it towed.

7 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 10/18/2013

The problem started when I noticed the rear brakes making excessive noise. Figuring that it was likely worn brake pads, I decided to change them. During the process of changing out the brake pads, I noticed that the rotors had been extremely worn down. This lead to me replacing both rear rotors, only to find that the brakes were not releasing after being applied. I then replaced both rear brake calipers. This did fix the problem of the brakes not releasing. After bleeding the brakes, I took the truck out for a test run. At this point there was a brake line failure and lead to complete brake failure. My concern is due to the fact that the brake lines are very heavily corroded, and I fear that there will be many future problems with the system. The truck has many other rusted parts underneath as well, and I do not use the vehicle for any abnormal driving use that would lead to excessive corrosion.

8 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/30/2013

While driving west on central avenue in petal, I applied the brake pedal to slow the vehicle to make a right turn onto stevens street. I felt no resistance and looked down to see if I had missed the brake pedal somehow, but it had pushed with no resistance to the floor. Pumping the brakes repeatedly, I was able to obtain a small amount of braking and made the turn on stevens. Stopping at deep south cycles, I told the mechanic what had occurred and he noticed the rear wheels were very hot, indicating rear brake lockup. Indeed, at that time they were still locked up. We checked the emergency brake to see if it was applied and it wasn't. The brake fluid level was the proper level, also. After the brakes had cooled down I drove the truck a short distance to a repair shop on central avenue where they replaced the rear brake calipers and pads. They stated that the rear rotors had turned blue from the heat, and added that they "had seen a lot of failures of GMC brake calipers. ".

9 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1998 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 04/30/2013

Catastrophic brake failure on state highway. No accident or injuries, but repairs included brake lines, calipers and pads due to corrosion of said lines and caliper assemblies. Shop said this is a common occurrence for gm products regardless of age of the vehicle.

10 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 04/19/2013

I just took my 99 GMC Sierra 1500 to the local dealership because the brake pedal going all way to the floor after driving on a major highway and felt the softness in the brake pedal attempting to stop because of heavy traffic. The service tech found the brake line leaking due corrosion, the tech gave the worst case scenario which would be replacing all 4 calipers, brake hoses, and brake lines for over $3000. 00. Gm or NHTSA needs to issue a recall or something but someone gets kill. Lucky there has been no deaths because of sub quality parts used by gm.

11 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 12/29/2012

When coming to a red light I tried to stop my truck. Upon pressing the brake peddle the first time I started to slow down. Upon pressing the brake peddle the second time, the peddle when to the floor and did not slow me down. I had to run the red light and us my e brake to slow down and finally stop at a gas station. While waiting for aaa to pick me up noticed brake fluid coming out from under drivers side. Truck was towed to my son's house. After looking under the truck he told me the brake lines from the front of the truck had broken. He suggested we replace all the brake lines, which we did. All the original lines were rotting away. When we removed the brake lines they all broke into pieces . We replaced all the original lines with stainless steel lines at cost of $400. 00 plus I found a front and a rear calipers frozen, so I replaced all the brakes and calipers. There is no way the brake lines on a 8 year old truck should be found in this shape. The original lines looked like aluminum coated steel.

12 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/16/2012

While backing my truck up to attach a trailer, I pressed on the brake pedal and it went to the floor. I had absolutely no braking ability. My truck ran into the trailer, causing minor damage. Upon inspection, it is evident that there is a failure of the brake line that runs to the driver's side rear caliper. A significant amount of brake fluid can be seen and smelled in this area. I am not able to drive the truck. It will need to be towed to a repair shop for what I assume will be expensive repairs.

13 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/13/2012

Front brake hose from frame to caliper rusted out and caused brake failure. When the issue was being looked at, noticed that the entire frame and all parts on the bottom of the truck were completely rusted like they were 100 years old. Appears there was no rust inhibitor included in any of the metal. All brake lines under body of the truck are so rusted that it is not safe to drive. Fuel line is also rusted. I feel that all of these issues are due to poor rust inhibitor used during manufacturing of the truck.

14 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/04/2012

While traveling out of state, the brake pedal suddenly went completely to the floor. Fortunately, the truck was stopped at the time. Repairs estimated by sears indicated that all lines should be replaced as well as parking brake parts due to severe corrosion. Had the ruptured line replaced along with caliper at the affected wheel. Will have to have all remaining lines replaced to be sure the vehicle can be driven safely. The technicians who worked on the vehicle indicated it is extremely corroded compared to other vehicles of it's age and mileage.

15 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 12/03/2011

Both the driver side and rear brake lines, because of rust, burst at the same time. It was lucky the car was not on the road. I have replaced all the lines and had to replace the front calipers because the bleeding nippled were completly gone due to rust. The rear calipers were in good shape. Over the course of ownership, I have had to forcefully remove the tires from the hub because they were rusted to the hub. Again I was lucky that I did this work at home and would have been in serious trouble had I been forced to change tires due to a flat. It also appears the truck frame is showing advance rusting for its age and milelage.

16 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 11/17/2011

The rear brake pads squealed & were grinding & the truck had very poor stopping power. The truck was taken to my mechanic & he was doing the brake job; he replaced all four rotors because they were rusted beyond repair. The pads were replaced as well. While he was doing the brakes he observed the brake lines were rusted to a point that it alarmed him & he said they should be changed. He also commented that the brakes had worn very uneven. The front pads were barely worn & were only making contact at a small area of the rotor (about 1/2" of the full face on the rotor). The back pads & rotors were completely worn down & the rotors were ruined. Some of the areas under the truck look as new & other places; mainly the a-frames, brake lines, some frame members, etc. Look like they are 15 years or more older. The brakes were put back together & now they are so tight & won't release the rotors, causing the rotors to over heat. I am now having him replace the back two calipers with replacement calipers that use phenolic pistons rather than steel & are not gm parts.

17 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 10/25/2011

Hydraulic brake line corrosion: the brake lines became so corroded that I was losing approximately 16 oz. Of fluid every 1000 miles. The corrosion was so bad that the bleeders on the front calipers had rusted off and had to be replaced as well as all of the brake lines. This resulted in a repair bill of $701. 31. Only time will tell when the remaining lines and calipers will need replacing. Only a few weeks ago the service mgr. At this location told me I probably had the best looking 2002 GMC pick-up in the u. S. So neglect is not at fault here.

18 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 10/18/2010

Coming back from the store then entering my drive way the brake pedal went to floor. Used emergency brake to stop. Looked under truck and saw brake fluid on ground. Had to be towed in. Had to have brake lines replace. Heavy corrosion . Truck had bad rust problem. Cost,$883. 00at 60,000 mi gas lines started to leak from corrosion. Had to be replaced on 10/09/2013. For $900. 00the under carriage is badly rusted and looks it has 200,000mi instead of 60,000mi. Brake backing plates are almost rusted away. Had to replace rear calipers ,rotors, pads 2 times.

19 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2007 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 03/28/2010

Front inner brake pads seized into calipers, causing front wheels to drag and skip. Factory calipers original.

20 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/16/2006

: the contact stated the rear passenger side tire had excessive wear and a noise was coming from the rear of the vehicle at various speeds. The contact removed the tire and replaced the caliper, rotor, and shoes. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer or independent repair shop.

21 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/06/2006

1999 GMC Sierra-46000 miles-all brake lines rusted out,3 leaks. Due to design of truck, cab has to be removed to access brake lines-also rear brake calipers rusted out after >4600 miles and had to be replaced. All repairs done at dealers.

22 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 01/13/2006

I sent this info to gm customer service and they told me the problem was because I live in ohio where salt is used on the roads in the winter. I did not bother trying to debate this silly response, I am just forwarding same info to your department. I am the original owner of a (GMC Sierra z-71, 4x4 which has always been garaged and only has 66,000 miles. While replacing a failed right rear brake caliper, I noticed the brake shield was extremely rusty. During this inspection an approximately 4 inche piece broke off in my hand (see pictures). I perform most repairs myself but since this involved removing the axle it was beyond my capability. The cost of this repair at bob ross GMC was $222. 00 which I paid. I am writing GMC because I do not believe a part such as this brake shield should rust so bad as to fall apart and have rusted through holes (see attached photo) in only 6 â½ years. I have inspected the driver's side rear brake shield and although not quite as bad as the passenger side rear brake shield, it is extremely rusty and probably will fail and need replaced in the next year. My position is this is a material design flaw that gm should investigate. Failure of this part, as in my case, will allow the elements (water, snow, dirt, rocks, etc. ) to damage the brake rotor and ultimately cause premature brake wear and failure. The brake shields on the front brakes have no rust, as I would expect of a vehicle that is only 6 years old. I can send pictures of failed part but not sure how to do with this form.

23 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 11/22/2005

Vehicle brakes damaged by road salt corrosion, causing rear brake calipers to seize up and brake disks to delaminate. Rear brakes were completely inoperable.

24 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 04/07/2005

2002 GMC Sierra developed serious brake problems. While driving 70 mph the right front brake caliper froze. This resulted in extreme heat and casued the hub and bearing assembly to come apart.

25 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/24/2004

While driving in the city while it was raining at 10 mph, the vehicle in front of the consumer stopped and the consumers brakes failed and hit the vehicle in front. (4/24/05) while in the rain the consumer had come off of the interstate going 20 mph and the brakes failed again. The vehicle was regularly serviced by the dealer. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on 4/28/05. The dealer reported that the vehicle needed front and rear pads, the front rotors need machining, the rear rotors needed replacing , and four wheel calipers needed to be serviced. The dealer stated that the pads were 70% worn. The consumer stated that the rear brakes have pad squeakers but they could not be heard. The consumer had taken the rear wheel off and saw the rear pad was completely metal to, and rear. The consumer made the repairs as well serviced the calipers.

26 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1997 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 03/14/2004

I took my 1997 GMC Sierra to the dealer because there are several recalls involving this vehicle. But the dealer said all the recalls pertain to the 1999-2004 models not mine - but I am having the identical problems - drive shaft, and brakes - my brakes lock up - create lots of noise, calipher damage, etc. I believe that the recalls for the newer vehicles should apply to mine as well. The vehicle is dangerous to drive when the brakes decide not to work. My wife drives the truck and I am concerned for her safety.

27 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 09/01/2002

Contact owns a 2001 GMC Sierra and there have been a problem with the brakes after the first 5,000 miles o. Tthe brake hit perfectly on the outboard part of the brake, but the in board part of the brake of each brake is only hitting about 15 percent. Upon inspection the brake pad wore out very little. By appearance, it a inside caliper was not milled square to the other side of the caliper, causing the brake pad not hit squarely on the rotor. The service dealer tested the vehicle and stated there was no recall on t and that the rotor was warped.

28 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1996 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 01/01/1998

Seats->drivers and passengers seats (leather) cracked in less than three years. Expected more for the price of this option. Have had brakes replaced 1 - 1 1/2 months prior to failure. I was out in the back country, 40 miles from paved roads, when I heard the rotors being torn up by what was left of the brake pads. It ruined both rotors. I was told at an independant shop that the calipers failed. I went to the dealer and the service advisor insisted that the calipers didn't fail . It was just cheap brake pads. I know for a fact that wasn't the case.
